Lodge of the Black Eagle
N.O.X:
On page 8 of Outer Gateways Grant mentions the Lodge of the Black Eagle "There is evidence that Spare's line of initiation can be traced through the New England Witch Covens, it was therefore identical with the most ancient currents represented today by, among other arcane streams, the Lodge of the Black Eagle which uses formulae comparable with those of New Isis Lodge. The latter received via O.T.O and Zos Kia Cultus the individual charasmata of both." Does anyone (Michael Staley, perhaps?) know if this Lodge is in current Operation? An internet search turned up nothing but some Boy Scout type stuff. Any details would be appreciated.
MichaelStaley:
I've not heard of them outside of the reference in Outer Gateways.
Best wishes,
Michael.
N.O.X:
Thanks, Michael. I was not particularly initerested in the Lodge itself (unless it had a connection with the T.O.T.O. or Zos Kia Cultus, which I'm sure Grant would have mentioned in more detail if there had been) but, I was really more interested in the formulae they use that are "comparable with those of the New Isis Lodge". Well, there's more research, for me to do some other time. Who knows? It may form an interesting article....
Noctifer:
One possibility which strikes me is that Grant may have meant it mythologically. Black Eagle was the name of Spare's "spirit guide", whom he drew as an American Indian. "The Lodge of the Black Eagle" might just mean the influence of this entity through Spare. Spare of course worked with Grant so in context (Spare, New England) it's likely Grant refers to this. I seem to remember that Yelg Patterson was connected to Black Eagle too, off the top of my head, she may have placed Spare in touch with him, or so the story goes. Could be wrong though.
N.O.X:
Noctifer,
Read that quote (or section in the book) again and you'll see it seems as though he was referring to an Independent Lodge in (then) current (pun intended) Operation. Hence the word "today" and the present-tense "uses" in there.
