The Sabbatic Craft
« on: July 03, 2012, 01:56:27 pm »
Andrew Chumbley found inspiration in many traditions, also in Crowley, and both Horus and Nuit and other egyptian deities are found in the illustrations in Azoetia. Shouldn't he have his own section on this site? I've just recently started a systematic study of his work Azoetia, which is an amazing piece of art.

Yes, as someone who is currently studying Chumbley's work, I tend to agree and have created a new section of this Forum:

For somebody who has not looked into Chumbley, are there any introductions available into his work, i.e. what is he all about, what is unique about Chumbley, etc.?

Definitely markus.
I would reccomend reading both volumes of Opuscula Magica by him, they elucidate his version of the Craft, and how it ties in with other traditions like Thelema.  They are readily available and very useful, the language is beautiful too.

Also his monograph by Three Hands Press on Mysticism Initiation and Dream is a good read about his theories on dream work.

Last but not least I find the writings of Daniel Schulke in Lux Haersis to elucidate Chumbleys theories in both an Artful and practical way, while still being somewhat poetic.

His Qutub 2nd ed. is available rather cheaply.  I would also recommend Psalter of Cain.

There's also a section on Sabbatic Craft in Children of Cain by Michael Howard.

Here's a link to some essays hosted @ the xoanon site:
http://www.xoanon.co.uk/public/disquisitio-essays-on-the-art-magical/

As for other introductory material I'd suggest Opuscula Magica Volume 2 since it might still be available. Volume 1 has been OOP for a while and is commanding large sums of money. Howard's Children of Cain is also a good source, not only for Chumbley but other branches of Traditional Craft.

Starfire Volume II Number 4 has an essay by Daniel Schulke which may be helpful, as well as his essay in Abraxas #1, but again, the latter title may be OOP. Since its publication last year, Lux Haeresis has become one of my favorite occult books but it's very difficult stuff and one may want to acquaint oneself with Kenneth Grant's Images & Oracles of Austin Osman Spare, esp. the second part as a prerequisite.

My sincerest apologies for my lack of ability in providing more affordable resources...

Good luck and all the best,
509.

I haven't posted in a while so I thought I'd chime in as well!

Opuscula Magica 1 and 2 are fantastic - and as 509 pointed out Number 1 is OOP but I believe you may still be able to get copies from Midian and sometimes eBay without too much gouging. Both of those give a good amount of insight into the praxis of the Sabbatic Craft. As it has been mentioned, M. Howards 'Children of Cain' is a good read and goes well with Sabbatic articles written and found in his magazine 'the Cauldron', in Starfire 1.4 and 2.4, Esoterra and Abraxas #1.

Psalter of Cain has beautiful content, imagery, and poetry and is printed using an old letter press style which in my opinion is amazing and is great to see a collaborative effort by the Cultus Sabbati being produced.

I actually received my copy of the Azoetia - sethos yesterday and am really excited to start digging in - but as it cost me a fortune to track down and purchase after many years I would recommend starting out with THP titles like Opusucla 1 and 2 (they're supposed to be published in a series of 5, so a lot more content will come out sooner or later), Iniatiation, Mysticism and Dream (OM#1).

I would also highly recommend the current Grant Magistar of the CS, D.A. Schulke's material - as it was said LVX HAERESIS is a great read, and ARS PHILTRON and VIRIDARIUM UMBRIS are in a league of their own.

I love Crowley, Grant and Spare and have become just as enthralled by Chumbley, Schulke, Fitzgerald & co. in recent years!

Looking forward to seeing more discussions on Lashtal!

I just received my copy of Viridarium Umbris yesterday!

It'll be a while yet until a) I can afford a copy of Azoetia or b) it gets reprinted.

One minor note: Chumbley is thanked for his "contribution to Chapter One on the Yezidis" in Nigel Jackson & Michael Howard's The Pillars of Tubal Cain and also for " his advice, unstinting support, guidance and contribution to the writing of" Howard's The Book of Fallen Angels. Two drawings are reproduced in Fallen Angels: the first, entitled Lilith; the second, Tubalo Lucifer. The Lover's Call to the Angel of Witchblood is given as Appendix A, adapted from The Draconian Grimoire or Dragon Book of Essex! Both Pillars... & ...Falln Angels tread similar territory as the Sabbatic Craft and are relatively inexpensive.

I'm also apart of the Yahoo group - a wealth of knowledge and friendly faces to go around!

It was a great day if we both managed to get our texts the same day, 509! The Azoetia was by far the most I've ever paid for a book with I believe Viridarium Umbris coming in second... Hope you didn't get gouged too much!

For those of you studying Azoetia I would highly recommend The Sabbatic Kabala of the Crooked Path written by Nicholaj Frisvold.
