My thanks to the_real_simon_iff for uploading a high quality copy of this 1920 Aleister Crowley self-portrait, as exhibited in Paris recently...

Any bets as to whether he was on mescaline at the time?

My benchmark for mescalin artworks would be Henri Michaux, and this looks bugger-all like anything by Michaux. I find the eyes to be strangely realistic in a way that the rest isn't.

93! In my opinion, this is a wonderful example of visionary art. It displays the auric radiance in such a way that demonstrates what AC saw/experienced. I've had spontaneous auric visions very similar to that. It resembles the work of Alex Grey (see www.alexgrey.com) in intensity, but limited by AC artistic talent. Nevertheless a great painting. Cheers! 93, 93/93. WM

I don't really like that much of Crowley's art, but I think this is great. Like Kyle, I thought this reminiscent in some ways of the portrait of Lam, as also the self-portrait with exaggerated cranium which appeared on the front of the first editions of The Confessions. I love also the representation of the intensity of consciousness as it radiates outwards.

On the WWW.Palaisdetokyo website there is downloadable press pack pdf available with a bigger illustration of the Hierophant. Also a short clip of Kenneth Anger

http://www.palaisdetokyo.com/#/fo3/high/media_clip/tokyoclips.php

Also that they are open every day except Monday from noon until midnight.

But no mention of a catalogue available. Is there anyone who has been with info about the catalogue if there is one?

OK

Beautiful self- portrait. Best painting I've seen from Crowley. Reminds me of a line from "White Rabbit:"
    "Remember what the dormouse said,
Feed your head..." Thank-you the_real_simon_iff and lashtal.
