| AO Spare Book launch Party - Fulgur Invites... |
Posted by Treadwells on in 20° : in 20° : dies : Anno IVxvi (Jul 12, 2008 - 08:52 PM) |
The launch party for AO Spare's The Valley of Fear is this Tuesday, 15 July, at Treadwell's Bookshop in Covent Garden, London. Do join us to celebrate the release of a volume of previously-unseen Spare artwork, long awaited and much anticipated, from Fulgur Ltd. The party will commence at 7pm and will continue until, if past events predict, we all move on to an after-hours club at about midnight. Do join us - to have your name added to the guest list please email or ring Treadwell's: info@treadwells-london.com, tel. 0207 240 8906. Copies will of course be on sale on the night (hardback £40.00). More on this work, from the description on the Fulgur website (www.fulgur.org):
It is sometimes observed that there are periods in our lives when the world around us seems to conspire against our most vital interests. For Austin Osman Spare, the darkest of these periods began in 1924. Then recently separated from his wife and living in reduced circumstances, the critical failure of his publishing venture The Golden Hind triggered a deep personal crisis. Disconnected from an evolving art world, Spare’s creative energies turned inward and he began a series of extraordinarily powerful works intended to fully capture his bitter desperation and fragile hope.
As one of these major ‘lost’ works The Valley of Fear is an unpublished sketchbook of 20 vigourous yet haunting studies from this bleak and difficult period. Designed as a companion volume to The Book of Ugly Ecstasy (Fulgur, 1996) here the delicately tinted original drawings have been reproduced in full colour. The work has been augmented by an introductory essay by Robert Ansell in which the metaphysical themes are explored and Spare’s methodologies for creating states of magical aesthesis for his audience are examined and discussed.

Very much looking forward to this. Fulgur book launches are always very good. I remember seeing this series of sketches many years ago. They're great, and I have been looking forward to this publication for a while now.
Best wishes,
Michael.

I'd just like to say what a great launch party this was, and what a marvellous job Robert Ansell has done in producing this book. The sketches are wonderfully reproduced.
Best wishes,
Michael.

There's something about the reproduction of these drawings that is quite exquisite. It's like one could be looking at the originals. Absolutely superb. If only he published Crowley!

I'm sure you'll receive it soon, Blue Khephra. The books were delivered only shortly before the launch. It was very hard work getting the pre-ordered copies of Outside the Circles of Time packaged and despatched in the wake of the launch, amd I'm sure it's the same for Robert. Publishing isn't all unending glamour, I'm sorry to say.
Eyebrows a-furrow,
Michael.

And here I thought it was all an unending glamour Mick ;)
I know it'll arrive eventually, I'm just being a grump.

I've noticed Robert has uploaded a recording of the rather hair-raising introductory talk from the launch party, amongst other things, here.

Marvelous audio there. I hereby forgive Robert every second of the delay in producing this book and thank him for his efforts.
Mine hasn't arrived yet, though it was sent a week ago. I have my opposable thumbs crossed, and my toes and anything else flexible.
