[...] when I say magical I don't mean illusions, I mean magic in the sense of Crowley magick. I have been meeting and having very informative exchanges with practising magicians in this country and in America. I treat the occult very seriously, in fact more and more seriously, and have found great insight into what I do from these people.

Thelema Intensive I of III: The Way of Thelema with Marcus Katz
£93. 10am - 4.45 pm each day
Thelema is notoriously difficult in the initial approach, yet is a highly influential and historically important system attracting much interest today. This course offers a serious introduction for those seeking an intelligent yet experiential immersion into Thelema's key concepts, practices and intellectual principles. It consists of illustrated lecture, group discussion, document examination and ritual work. Presentations will explore core ideas: Liber Al, the HGA, aeons and grade systems, always explaining how it fits into the wider Western esoteric tradition and the life of Crowley himself. Interspersed with these are ritual sessions and exercises, in which the theoretical ideas are experienced. Textual study sessions will look more closely at important texts of the tradition. The tutor will make use material unavailable to the general public, including research conducted in Egypt, rarely-seen photographs and notes from Crowley's original manuscripts.
Marcus Katz holds an MA in Western Esotericism (University of Exeter), where he is now doing doctoral research on western occult groups. He is also a longstanding magical practitioner in the British occult community. Over the past two decades he has appeared somewhat anonymously and under various noms de plume in the occult community's best-known journals. His eclectic contributions to early magazines include a gematria computer program in the first issue of Chaos International; visionary texts inspired by Ma'at Magick in the Lamp of Thoth; and nature poetry in the Pipes of Pan. An inveterate world traveller, he now lives a more scholarly life in the Lake District.
Note: this course is not affiliated with any particular thelemic order or any particular interpretation of Crowley's philosophy. Further weekends, building upon this one, will follow in later 2009. Held for the first time at Treadwell's in July 2008, it received glowing reviews from those attending.

Thelema for the Terrified I (17th-18th January 2009)
After an excellent attendence by a great group of 11 participants, who proved both friendly, insightful and demanding, I am pleased to deliver the unedited feedback from the latest run of the "Thelema I: Way of Thelema" course at Treadwells:
Participants looked to gain from this course …
“knowledge of Crowley”, “a more comprehensive understanding of Thelema and Crowley”, “to learn more about Thelema and put it into context”, “insight into groups currently working on a Thelemic foundation”, “access to materials not normally available to the general public”, “opportunity to work with and exchange ideas with similarly interested people”, “a background to the Thoth deck and answers to questions Thelemites won’t answer”, “more about Crowley’s magical system”, “a better understanding of the theology, philosophy, ideas and rituals of Thelema”, “an overview of the man, his life and work”, “insight into Thelemic books and practices”, and “furthering my knowledge of magical systems”.
These requirements were met …
“Yes”, “Beyond expectation”, “Yes!”, “Yes – photographs of original magical notebooks were particularly thrilling!”, “mostly”, “yes”, “yes”, “yes – sufficiently”, “not completely, as I felt too much emphasis was placed on AC himself – but other interesting issues came up [kabbalistic model of therapy] that I had not thought of or expected”, “Yes – looking forward to the next course on what a student of Crowley’s system(s) would be expected to learn and do”.
What surprised participants about the workshop was …
“the group exercises – I am surprised I felt so comfortable”, “the exercises and work on Kabbalah”, “I was surprised and pleased by the practical work”, “enjoyed the details on connections between people that I didn’t know about”, “doing the sigil work on Sunday … and the willed nostalgia exercise!”, the amount of biography, slides, and accompanying material”, “the quality of the audience!”, “I enjoyed the exercises, the style and the amount of information”, “the exercises – visual presentations – pretty much the whole thing I enjoyed!”, “I was surprised by the similarities to the philosophy of therapy – I really enjoyed the exercises!”, “how varied it was – it covered more subjects than I expected”.
The content, materials and delivery were viewed as …
“Well-researched, unbiased, respectful”, “very good and well put together, nice to see things that aren’t in general circulation”, “more handouts!”, “very comprehensive and eclectic for two days – beautifully presented”, “excellent materials, good delivery, not quite pitched correctly on the first day, excellent presentation – neutral and patient”, “extremely well-presented and clear – I liked the NLP!”, “excellent!”, “interesting, well-structured and entertaining”, “I found it useful to put the images and exercises together, and appreciated the discussion and feeling free to ask questions at any point”, and “very good – measured delivery and nice mixture of handouts, materials and slides”.
For future workshops …
“more on those around in Crowley’s lifetime, like Dion Fortune”, “things are already good the way they are!”, “Follow-up courses and discussion group on Facebook or similar”, “ongoing forum”, “more practical work like demonstration of rituals such as LBRP”, “more discussion on the teachings within the Libers”, “more Kabbalah”.
