Since all men from their birth employ sense prior to intellect, and are necessarily first conversant with sensible things: Some, proceeding no farther, pass through life considering these as first and last; and apprehending what is painful to be evil, what is pleasant to be good, they deem it sufficient to shun the one and pursue the other. Some pretending to greater reason than the rest, esteem this wisdom; like earth-bound birds, though they have wings are unable to fly. The secret souls of others would recall them from pleasure to worthier pursuits; but they cannot soar: they choose the lower way and strive in vain. Thirdly, there are those divine men whose eyes pierce through clouds and darkness to supernal vision, where they abide as in their own lawful country

| "Bronson" Director to Make Crowley Film |

... and he's looking for a script.
Fangoria magazine carries an interview with "Bronson" movie director Nicolas Winding Refn in which he covers some fascinating and familiar territory for visitors to this site.
“I’m a massive fan of filmmaker Kenneth Anger,” explains the Danish filmmaker, who’s currently finishing off his new horror/fantasy VALHALLA RISING...
“His work, like INAUGURATION OF THE PLEASURE DOME and INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER, informed the look and tone of BRONSON to some degree, and I was going through my Anger book collection to see if there was anything missing. I found ‘The Aleister Crowley Scrapbook’ by Colin Wilson [sic.], in which Anger speaks about the villa in Cefalu, Sicily where the infamous British occultist played a lot of his black magic sex games...
“It started me thinking about applying the same logic to a film on Crowley as I had on BRONSON. Bronson’s frustration was all about his inability to express himself through violent celebrity; prison finally transformed his aimless life into that of a sensitive artist. Similarly, Crowley finding himself through drugs, astrology, black magic and bisexuality could become another fascinating metaphor—to explore the concept of what it means to the British in terms of eccentric hedonism.”
Refn is aiming for more of a twisted biographical piece. “I am not knowledgeable at all about Crowley’s life,” Refn admits, “and I will need a good writer to put all these ideas in formation... I have no title as yet, and will not be able to get around to it until after the proposed PUSHER 4 at least. But there’s definitely a far-out, sexy, trippy, horrifying movie to be made out of this notorious, Satan-worshipping cult personality. Think Charles Manson times a billion, and that’s what I want to depict on screen.”

Just makes me sad to hear this kind of thing:
"But there’s definitely a far-out, sexy, trippy, horrifying movie to be made out of this notorious, Satan-worshipping cult personality. Think Charles Manson times a billion, and that’s what I want to depict on screen" -
Ho - hum. Let's get a real mountain climbing movie going....

I agree with the above criticism. What is it about our culture that even intelligent, educated, and otherwise cool people cannot go over the binary dichotomy of Christianity and Satanism? As if there are no other ways of being, ahem, 'spiritual' beside these two. The last time I got similarly disappointed was after reading an article on Kenneth Anger by Guy Maddin, where again Maddin could not find any other label to refer to the filmmaker that he obviously admire, except Satanism and / or Black Magic (can't remember exact words, but something of the sort). Crowley mentions somewhere that there is this general problem with the study of, ahem, 'supernatural' and the like, so that otherwise intelligent people, when they turn towards these subject, very often embrace the most ridicules beliefs.

Well, I don't know what the film's like, but the guy's patently off his trolley: "Bronson’s frustration was all about his inability to express himself through violent celebrity; prison finally transformed his aimless life into that of a sensitive artist..."
From the Times online: "Bronson was jailed for armed robbery in 1975 but remains in prison because of his repeated violent attacks on inmates and prison staff. In 1999 he held a prison art teacher at knifepoint for 44 hours after he criticised his sketches."
A "sensitive artist" indeed! - the poor darling.
We look forward to seeing this fellow let loose on that other shrinking violet, our own beloved and esteemed AC.

My thoughts too, oneiros. What's all this crap about expressing oneself through "violent celebrity", for God's sake? Is this a reference to so-called "hell-raisers" (no disrespect to Clive Barker here, needless to say)? Or is it the soi-dissant glorification of violence - the sociopath as zeitgeist? Then against, it could just be moronic, I suppose.

Egads, as if things weren't bad enough in trying to explain Crowley to people someone like this wants to do a biopic? I beg that someone with some REAL knowledge of Crowley comes forward to help produce this film as opposed to some schlock writer who just loves the legend. Let's see a story about the man whose only real crime was being bi-sexual and experimenting with drugs... ie nothing to have been up in arms about!

One small piece of honesty: “I am not knowledgeable at all about Crowley’s life,” Refn admits.
Let's hope before he makes the film he educates himself. Blind & naive optimism on my part?
