The death has been announced of Andrew Chumbley, one of the most significant modern occult authors... This from bazelek on the AOSgallery news list:
"I have just received news that earlier today Andrew Chumbley suffered an acute asthma attack and was rushed to hospital. Tragically, the attack was so severe that whilst on route he suffered a massive - and fatal - heart attack. It was his 37th birthday today."
Andrew Chumbley investigated through his art and writings the space between Wicca and Austin Osman Spare. LAShTAL.com extends its condolences to his family, friends and readers...
terribly sad news, and sobering since i am older than Andrew by five years.... i met him once, had a fascinating conversation over several beers and we had been in regular email touch since, and swapped material in our respective researches... i've been talking to his friends online and we will be running an obituary in the next JSM. What is very upsetting is the 'feeding frenzy' that has arisen in the last week or so, with people demanding immediate and comprehensive publication of all the remaning writings by Andrew (and, i'm sure a rapid upsurge of the value of his books as 'collectors' try to grab them all from booksellers) at a time when Andrew's family, friends and publishing colleagues must be totally grief-stricken. It also strikes me that this may be an indication of what might happen when dear Kenneth Grant dies.....
You're absolutely right, of course, on all the points you raise. Without naming names, these calls from a handful of individuals for immediate publication of Andrew Chumbley's material by, say, Fulgur, leaves a rather unpleasant taste in the mouth and ignores the very real feelings that friends of the man must be experiencing.
I'm told that Ben Fernee - of Caduceus Books - returned his stock of books by Chumbley to the family and, I have to say, I'm glad he did. The fear being, of course, that sharks are circling in search of a quick eBay profit.
Having said that, Mr Chumbley's death seems to have affected many people - the number of "hits" that resulted from the death notice carried on LAShTAL.com is evidence of that. Also, searches for his name on Google have resulted in a significant number of visitors here, showing the desire of many to read material by and about him.
I have received several emails this week from people that were very fond of the man - and that's the most important thing at the moment...
