Post subject: The Valley Of Fear
I just spotted this on the Fulgur website:
Quote: › Our next title, a previously unpublished work by Austin Spare titled The Valley of Fear, will be formally announced on January 21st 2008. Subscribers will be sent a notification email, but may also check this site for details on that day.
I have never heard of this work. Does anyone have any insider info on what it is ??

It's mentioned in the list of 'titles available' at the back of Spare's Anathema of Zos, along with The Book of Ugly Ecstasy.

I see listed:
Earth Inferno
Book Of Satyrs
Book of Pleasure
Arena Of Anon
Focus Of Life
Ugly Ecstacy
The New Eden
Automata
Book of Titles
Fragments
Anathema
In preparation:
The Sphinx Answered
but no Valley Of Fear.
Anyway, it's only 4 weeks away, so I suppose we'll soon find out. A precursor to The Cult Of One perhaps ?

Weird title for a serious magical book!

Spot-on BK - that's the result of posting prior to large doses of coffee and nicotine of a morning. Apologies for confusion (mine own) there!
"The Effort of Remembering in the Valley of Fear" is a chapter heading in The Focus of Life, and a very pregnant image I've always thought. Look forward to the book!

It looks something like "The city of ghosts" or "Horror of the night" etc. Anyway we should wait and see.

Or you could look at the Sothebys catalogue for the auction of 30th October 1997 . . .

Ah Mick, not everyone has your addiction to auctions!
The Valley of Fear is a companion volume for those who enjoyed The Book of Ugly Ecstasy, except in colour. There's more, but you'll have to wait!

So it shouldn't necessarily be a text book. Should it? Or maybe something like Earth Inferno.

Ahah !
Thanks for the reply oor Baz. That's a relief, as my poor googling skills were getting me worried that it was an illustrated Arthur Conan Doyle story !
The title shows up in Focus Of Life; "The effort of remembering in the Valley Of Fear".
Was AOS an ACD fan then ?

Well Doyle was certainly an AOS fan, because there are reports he turned up to view the 1927 show. As for The Valley of Fear I think Spare intended it more as a metaphor...

Does anyone have their copy yet?
Did anyone go to the party at Treadwells?
Eagerly awaiting the deluxe in Japan!

I went to the launch party at Treadwells, and it was very enjoyable. My wife Caroline bought a copy of the book, and it is lovely. The drawings are superb; the reproduction on uncoated paper is very fresh and sharp with subdued colours, and for those of us with a tactile disposition the feel of the paper itself is a joy. The introductory essay by Robert Ansell is very illuminating. You'll not be disappointed by this book.
There is more discussion as comments to the News Item about the launch, worth looking at.
Best wishes,
Michael.

I enjoyed the launch party too. I think Fulgur are truly magical, after all, Spare published 4 books in his lifetime and it seems to me that Fulgur have republished about 10 of them
Their production values shame practically everyone else.

Thanks for all the info, I have now read the comments section. I wish I could have been at the party, but will not be back in the UK for another couple of weeks. Looking forward to getting this book soon!

Thanks for the kind comments guys...
Christina sure knows how to throw a party, we are just pleased to give a good excuse!
All standard copies of The Valley of Fear have now been dispatched. The special edition will take slightly longer, but should be with you all soon.
Orryelle's Conjunctio is our next title, but we have another Spare project scheduled for November, full details soon.

When I received my copy of The Valley of Fear it struck me – as usual when I buy a book from Fulgur – how beautifully produced it is. Although being 'just' the standard edition, so much work has been done to make it a book I will treasure for years.
Furthermore I think we are most fortunate to see a true first edition of a work by Spare published so many years after his death. Thanks Robert!

The new book by Fulgur has not only the high standard quality of the editing house but also the stunning and fantastic art of Spare at his best,
and it is companion to the Book of Ugly Ecstasy.
These drawings were colored by AOS and the effect is wonderful, also I like the 'grey' paper effect which gives I think a more fascinating glamour to the whole book.
I think that we must give our compliments to Robert for this new excellent book and for the devotion to the memory and the work of Spare which now is going to be more more recognized publicly as a great genius of the past century
thanks again Fulgur and go ahead with your projects

Hi all, lots of you have been waiting for the next delivery of Valley of Fear since the last lot ran out - just a note to say it's back in stock now.
