The common defect of all mystical systems previous to that of the Aeon whose Law is Thelema is that there has been no place for Laughter. But the sadness of the mournful Mother and the melancholy of the dying Man are swept in the limbo of the past by the confident smile of the immortal Child. And there is no Vision more critical in the career of the Adept of Horus than the Universal Joke.

Anyone know the name of the boarding house where Crowley finished out his life in Hastings?

Thanks,

And please do not describe it as a "boarding house", which in the UK describes a seedy run-down seaside place with single rooms for travelling salesmen, visiting music hall artists and the like. Netherwood was a converted mansion house that acted as a home for retired gentlefolk. The use of the term "boarding house" by Symonds - and the film of a row of just such seedy places along the seafront at Hastings in the "Masters of Darkness" TV fiasco, are a part of the ongoing campaign to denigrate Crowley and make it seem that he died in squalor, rather than at a rather nice retirement home.

A better view of what Netherwood - and Crowley - were like can probably be seen in Night of the Demon, which was at least inspired by Crowley's life. There the Crowley character can be seen outside a mansion house entertaining children, just as he used to do towards the end.

yes to what Steve said- that Kenneth Grant was able to rent a cottage in the grounds of Netherwood when he was AC's secretary gives weight to the notion that the place was considerably more than a beach hut.....

Hear Hear! Crowley was much loved at Netherwood, and the place was the very antithisis of a seedy boarding house. Regards.

It's a common misconception - encouraged by those wishing to malign Crowley.
