I think it's basically magic. There is such a thing as magic, and the Beatles were magic. It depends on what you believe life is. Life is an energy field, a bunch of molecules. And these particular molecules formed to make these four guys, who then formed into this band called the Beatles and did all that work. I have to think that was something metaphysical. Something alchemic. Something that must be thought of as magic--with a "k."

Issue no.297 of Book and Magazine Collector has an article on AC's works. More about his life than his books. Written by Rosalie Parker it's not the best piece I've ever read, or the worst. Though the 'he had eaten his way through most of his inheritance' quote made me laugh, perhaps she has a point...

There's also a few omissions in the bibliography itself but still, it's always nice to see the Beast amongst the celebrity horror mags in my local branch of 'Smiths.

John Crow refers to this issue of the magazine in the latest entry on his Treasure House Of Pearls Blog - http://www.thelema.nu/archives/297 - and he reproduces its cover image there.

His piece unwittingly makes this Blog one of the more amusing ones I've read recently, as John berates the author of the article for the poor quality of her research:

It boggles the mind that these people cannot take the time to read one of the decent AC biographies out there. One fact jumped out at me though. According to her, Crowley’s father died of tongue cancer. I don’t ever remember reading that little detail.

To be honest, it's fairly mind-boggling that John hadn't noticed reference to this cause of death in his studying of just about any of the published biographies of Crowley ("decent" or otherwise). Crowley refers to it himself in his Confessions, too, of course, where it's clear that the tragic irony of the death of a Christian preacher from cancer of the tongue was not lost on him. Perhaps John just forgot.
