There's a 7 page feature on Kenneth Anger in this months issue of movie magazine Empire. Naturally AC shows up more than once. Can't see anything about it on their website, but I didn't look far

It's a remarkably good article: see "Empire", August 2008.

Is it just me that thinks Anger is over-rated, in EVERY way?

No, you're not alone. However, one cannot look down upon the fact that, at the very least, his association with Thelema might spark the interest of those who do respect his work.

I think you'll find that yours is the standard view of Anger's work: the average movie-goer has a very negative view of his films, seeing them as self-indulgent nonsense.

And that's absolutely fine.

I personally think his films are - taken as a whole - magnificent, bewitching and entirely engrossing. But then what do I know? I hated "Out Of Africa".

It's not that I don't 'like' them - the point I made is I think they are over-rated. I am a fan of self-indulgent nonsense, on the whole. Just not when it's mediocre and blown up to mythic proportions. Give me Jame's Bidgood's 'Pink Narcissus' any day. Ha!

I'm not actually a fan either. I saw "Rabbits Moon" a couple of years ago at the week long Hafler Trio "happening" at the Horse Hospital in London. It was being shown as a programme of cinema that more or less explained what H30 was all about. Never been so bored in all me life. I was very relieved when the Buster Keaton in a Samuel Beckett film came on.

I feel Anger has never truly realised his daimon, unlocked his potential, he could of done so much more. There's scenes in his films I'll always remember but on the whole they disappoint me.

Sometimes artists themselves are more interesting than what they produce, Angers life would be a film worth seeing.

The Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome is one of the greatest religious works of art ever made.
In most great films you get a few moments of ecstatic vision where a gesture or facial expression is highlighted, ritualised and fetishised. For example in Karl Freund's 'The Mummy' of 1932, Boris Karloff holds a dagger in his beringed and long fingernailed hand as the camera zooms in; or the many extreme close ups of Moira Shearer in Powell/Pressburger's 'The Red Shoes'- a vision of religious ecstasy crossed with orgiastic pain.
Anger junks heavy and time consuming narrative and instead fills his films with these striking moments. So many of them that the viewer is overwhelmed trying to take them all in.
The Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome with it's lysergic effects and saturated colours, gorgeous and magnificent cast of beautiful and ferocious godesses - not to mention Janacek's masterly music - brings tears of joy to my eyes every time I watch it.

I would definitely agree that Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome is his greatest work thus far. It is also very apparent that many would be bored to tears by his body of work. I would attribute this lack of accessibility more to the fact that he is conveying esoteric themes not only with respect to religion/philosophy, but film as well. I assume Kenneth Anger has achieved his goal to a certain extent given the amount of inspiration he has provided to many including myself.

Hi.
I have just got the August 'Empire' mag with the excellent illustrated Kenneth Anger article. One pic being; 'Anger at a signing accompanied by his legendary cinematic efforts'. It shows the blue & red ANGER jersey which has been part of his wardrobe for some time.

Some may think he has these specially made. This is not the case, cleverly Anger gets a New York RANGERS hockey jersey, these are readily available in the U. S. but cost about $100 & picks off the letters R & S to leave ANGER.

Nick.
