Random Quote

I have learned a few tricks along the way, a few random skills and simple avoidance techniques- but mainly it has been luck, I think, and a keen attention to karma, along with my natural girlish charm.

Things I've heard about curses:

"Three times three, back on thee."

"Black/white: who cares? There is only Will."

"They're okay, as long as you put a limit on them, e.g., until the person learns a positive lesson."

"They are mundane, a distraction from Conversation with HGA and the Great Work."

I'd be interested to hear what you have to say on the matter.

Cursing is a form of magical technology, I suppose?

Cursing can be used for protection too, thinking of some of those Mesopotamian protection spells against disease and other blights; statues of Pazuzu in the window to keep out other nasties. Also cursing used in the Goetia to constrain spirits to be summoned etc.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

The ability to curse is directly proportional to the amount of pain an individual can bare. True, technique does have a part to play in terms of effectiveness but the strength behind it is often the real deciding factor and that is simply how resilient the person who is making the curse is. Liber AL Ch 1, Vs 22,23 explain this the best. Like lots of things that are thought cool though by those who have little experience of it, the whole thing of cursing is actually rather unpleasant, though it should be a lot worse for the target of course.

As for threefold return that is a lie put about by Wiccan Priesthood or Right Hand Path so that Wicca could have a moral high ground in terms of interfaith acceptance. It has no basis in anything other than politics and actually goes against real Universal Law as it would imply that something comes from nothing. You can’t do something and have three times as much come back, were would the other two come from?

Love is the law, love under will.

Alex

There is a thread that covered some of the issues over cursing:

From experience - when you curse someone you exchange one colour of shit for another.

In the words of that wisest of adepti, Terry Pratchett:

A wizard's staff poked out. The chieftain saw the knob on the end.

'Now, then,' he said, pleasantly. 'I know the rules. Wizards aren't allowed to use magic against civilians except in genuine life-threatening situa--'

There was a burst of octarine light.

'Actually, it's not a rule,' said Ridcully. 'It's more a guideline.'

Thanks for the thread link, hawthornrussell. It was very helpful, especially the comments from Aum418. Also, thanks to Alex_Bennett, who summed up some of the issues in a nut shell.

All this has aligned with my own experiences. About three years ago, I did what I consider a black operation, a curse. Since then, especially in the last year, I've come to recognize in myself a lot of the same behaviors, attitudes, tactics I condemned in my target.

That interconnectedness, and I'm not talking about solipsism here, has made me realize that one effect of the curse has been a consciousness, isolation, and gradual purging of those elements in myself (still not there completely, but working on it). It is reminiscent for me of what some people say about Goetia, that these entities are aspects of ourselves, and so we're learning to control these internal elements by externalizing them and "commanding" them. (My knowledge of Goetia is limited, so forgive me if I've misrepresented it here.)

I can say that at the time of the operation, my ego did crave retribution and justice in return for the target's act, but overall, the operation has gone beyond "Because" and linear causality (because you hurt me, I hurt you back). All the "blow-back" (the "pain" in Alex_Bennett's post) I've experienced has come "out of left field" and has taught me a lot of important lessons about my relationship with my partner (completely unconnected to the curse) and my now-admitted attachments to the material realm (Malkuth).

These days, the entire event is starting to take on more and more of an alchemical nature: a burning away of the dross, a spiritual refining that is still ongoing...

I'm still working through these issues, even now after three years, but that's why what you've all been saying has resonated so deeply.

Thanks again,

Blessed be,

93

AW!! For the Gods' sake Paul ! There's only one thing that I hate more than little yellow smiley faces and that's bloody Terry Pratchett !

I'm going to walk out into the deluge of rain and let it wash the feeling of accursedness from me.
