Neither male nor female?: Hijras & Sannyasinis in India
In this talk, Phil Hine looks at two seemingly 'queer' groups in Indian religious culture - The Hijras - often described as Indias third sex - and Sannyasinis - renunciant women who have allegedly transcended their gender.
But, are the hijras 'cross dressers' or transvestites, as we Westerners understand the term? Research says no. And are the sannyasinis 'asexuals' as Westerners know them? Again, research says no.
In fact, the more people study hijras and sannyasinis, the harder they are to put into our own 'queer' categories. This has implications for us in the West - namely how we look at our own sexual identities. Phil shows that actually, what it means to be a hijra - or a female renouncer - cannot be understood by common Western 'equivalents'. He argues that, whatever society you are looking at, your sexual identity is really only understandable against the background of the social networks in which they are embedded.
What about queerness and alternative sexual identity in modern paganism, modern chaos magic, and modern witchcraft? Bring your thoughts as to how sexuality, identity, and liminality influence who and what you are, magically. This talk is followed by a round-table discussion, and everyone's perspective is sought in the discussion. Boys, girls, in-betweens and others: you are called!
The speaker, Phil Hine, is a longstanding magical practitioner and occultist. He is famed for his leading role in the chaos magic movement and for his books on the subject (notably Pseudonomicon and Prime Chaos). he was one of Britain's earliest 'out' queer occultists - at a time when occultism could barely handle it. Never a stagnant occultist, his focus and practice are nowadays centred on Indian tantra, and lives with his partner of 13 years, artist Maria Strutz.
Drinks party and soiree follows the talk. Please book places in advance.
