Amalantrah Working at Treadwells

On 14 October 2010 at Treadwells Bookshop…

Crowley's Amalantrah Working: Thelema, The Tao, and the New York Years

Gary Dickinson

In New York in 1918, Aleister Crowley undertook a visionary session with his friend Roddie Minor, with her having visions and reporting them to Crowley as they occurred. One part of the record relates her saying, "We went down by the stream and across it into the woods where the wizard and the child were. They both looked a little lonely. I asked his name and he told me Amalantrah. I asked who I was and he said 'Part of the Tao.'"

Gary Dickinson looks in greater depth at this episode, Crowley's relationship with the Tao Te Ching, and other related themes in the Working.

Gary Dickinson is a sinologist and Crowley researcher: a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, he worked in the field of Chinese art for over twenty years, lecturing throughout the world on Chinese ritual and symbolism. He is co-author of Imperial Wardrobe, widely regarded as a source-work on the court dress of the Qing period (1644-1911). He was also an historical consultant for the Oscar-winning costumes in Bertolucci's The Last Emperor.

Brother Curwen, Brother Crowley

An extraordinarily exciting new book from Teitan Press. A lesser publisher might have gone with an alternative title: Aleister Crowley: The Sex Magick Letters. Having had the opportunity to see this already, I consider it an essential purchase for anyone genuinely interested in Crowley…

Brother Curwen, Brother Crowley

By Aleister Crowley and David Curwen
Edited and with an Introduction by Henrik Bogdan and a Foreword by Tony Matthews

In September 1944, a fifty-one year old Londoner named David Curwen wrote to Aleister Crowley, initiating a correspondence that would last several years. While Curwen approached Crowley with deference, the relationship that evolved between them was a complex one that defied the accepted parameters of the student-teacher nexus. For David Curwen was no newcomer to the study of the occult, and Crowley soon discovered that the flow of knowledge would not be simply one way. In particular Crowley was tantalized by the deep understanding of the principals of tantra that Curwen had acquired during the course of many years study under a mysterious guru.

At Crowley's urging Curwen joined the O.T.O., but he remained skeptical of many of "the Beast's" claims, and the two ultimately parted company on strained terms. However, Curwen retained his interest in the occult, and in later life he devoted himself to the study of alchemy, publishing the results of his researches pseudonymously in the book In Pursuit of Gold, a work that many believe to be the most significant study ever published of practical alchemy.

In addition to reproducing all of the surviving correspondence between the pair, Brother Curwen, Brother Crowley includes an important biographical Foreword by David Curwen’s grandson, Tony Matthews. The letters themselves have been edited and annotated by the scholar of Crowley and Western esotericism, Henrik Bogdan, who has also contributed an illuminating Introduction that gives context to the relationship between Crowley and Curwen, as well as exploring the history of their interest in sexual occultism and tantra, and the influence that they had in Kenneth Grant.

Praise for Brother Curwen, Brother Crowley:

"A subtle, demanding spiritual teacher and a skeptical, literal-minded student -- what could possibly go wrong? A fascinating and often amusing correspondence, and a brilliant editorial debut by Henrik Bogdan."
Hymenaeus Beta, Frater Superior O.T.O.

"Brother Curwen, Brother Crowley illuminates a hitherto shadowy figure in Aleister Crowley's twilight years, David Curwen, a tantric and alchemist who was the last person to be initiated into the Ninth Degree of the O.T.O. by Crowley himself. Curwen emerges from this study Janus-faced, reflecting back on Crowley's life in magick while simultaneously looking ahead to the inspiration he himself would provide to one of Crowley's more prolific followers and interpreters, Kenneth Grant. Brother Curwen, Brother Crowley thus represents a fascinating nexus in the transmission and transmutation of esoteric traditions across the twentieth century."
Dr. Richard Kacznyski Author of Perdurabo.

"An important series of previously unpublished Crowley correspondence on the OTO and its secrets, with contemporary commentary which clarifies these esoteric teachings and their history."
Martin P. Starr Author of The Unknown God.

"A moving, funny and profound volume detailing the correspondence between an impecunious, querrulous and impatient Magus-Beast and a respectful, determined and stubborn Alchemist-Magus-in-waiting. Brother Curwen, Brother Crowley includes a Foreword as fascinating and revealing as its Introduction, and is beautifully presented and published—this is a perfect book!"
David Tibet / Current 93

The book is a hardcover, octavo sized (9 x 6 inches, approx 23.5 x 15.2cm), xlviii + 136pp. Sewn, printed on acid-free paper. Heavy dark green cloth binding, with gilt titling etc to the spine. Black and white frontispiece, and eight pages of black and white illustrations. Pictorial dustjacket. ISBN: 9780933429277. Edition limited to 777 numbered copies. Price: US $45.00

The Man Who Unleashed The Birds

The Man Who Unleashed The Birds: Frank Baker & his Circle by Paul Newman

In 1963 the world of entertainment was transfixed by the terrifying movie The Birds directed by Alfred Hitchcock and based on a short story by Daphne Du Maurier. But what many people do not know was that the same story had been written thirty years earlier by a brilliant young writer called Frank Baker who depicted the city of London falling apart as it was mercilessly attacked by a mysterious flock of birds. This novel had been forgotten and Baker was smarting in penury as he watched what he saw as his own creation go on to reap thousands of dollars. He communicated his anxieties both to Hitchcock and Du Maurier. The first ignored him; the second sympathised and consoled; but this did not salve his torment. Isolated and neglected, bisexual and devoted to alcohol, he felt very much a literary leftover, hiding away with his family mainly in the duchy of Cornwall, about which he wrote with tremendous passion in his brooding first novel The Twisted Tree (1935), in which a mother sacrificed her son, and a later work – also set on the Penwith Peninsula – Talk of the Devil in which a black magic conspiracy turns out to be a ruse concealing a Nazi espionage network. But he was actually a writer of worldwide renown whose classic supernatural comedy Miss Hargreaves was adapted for the London stage with his friend, Margaret Rutherford, taking the leading role. And yet, although he’d been saluted by several critics and a film had been made, starring Robert Donat, of his heart-rending novel Lease of Life, the greater body of his work remained unknown.

IN MEMORIUM Robert North

Thanks to 666TSAEB for this News item, which is presented here un-edited...

IN MEMORIUM

Robert North

It has come to our attention and personally just verified during a telephone conversation with his wife, that noted author and translator, Robert North has passed into the Next Step last Friday, 30 July 2010 at age 59. Survivors include his wife Sarah Gozland North and daughter Justine.

Born 28 July 1951 e.v., Robert North is perhaps best known for his translation and publication of Pascal Beverly Randolph’s Sexual Magic, Magickal Childe Publications, Inc., New York, 1988 e.v. (Randolph was identified as a powerful influence on the founders of both the Golden Dawn and the O.T.O.) Those of you who have read the Editorial within The Equinox, Thelema Publishing Company, 1981 e.v., Vol. V, No. 4 will remember Marcelo Ramos Motta’s honorable mention, wherein Mr. North is noted for having an O.T.O. Lodge in Missouri. His O.T.O. motto was Peni Tento Non Penitente. He would later relocate to Florida where he organized his Seminole O.T.O. Lodge after the Native Indian Tribe of Florida of the same name. He there extensively annotated a copy of Francis King’s The Secret Rituals of the O.T.O. for Lodge Initiation. Robert North would thereafter relocate to Boston Massachusetts where he was perhaps most productive as an accomplished artist, musician, writer, guru, translator, band manager, photographer, researcher and Grand Imperial Hierophant and Visible Head of The New Flesh Palladium, his own magical order, whose teachings explore sexual magick in its extremes. He continued his researches upon returning to Florida’s South Beach and also released the remainder of his writings recently through Lulu Publishing. Bob was our longtime Brother and friend, his place in the magical community shall be missed. Memorial Services will be held in Florida’s Miami Beach area toward the end of August. We shall post further details as information develops. May the Work he established continue and the cells of the New Flesh live on.

Diary Of A Drug Fiend: Weiser Reprint

Coming from Red Wheel Weiser in September…

This is a true story. . . It is a terrible story; but it is also a story of hope and of beauty.

Written by Aleister Crowley, The Diary of a Drug Fiend tells the story of young Peter Pendragon and his lover Louise Laleham, and their adventures traveling through Europe in a cocaine and heroin haze. The bohemian couples’ binges produce visions and poetic prophecies, but when their supply inevitably runs dry they find themselves faced with the reality of their drug addiction. Through the guidance of King Lamus, a master adept, they use the application of practical Magick to free themselves from addiction.

First published in 1922 and dubbed “a book for burning” by the papers of the time, The Diary of a Drug Fiend reveals the poet, the lover, and the profound adept that was Aleister Crowley.

Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), who claimed to be the re-incarnation of Dr. John Dee among others, lived in England from 1875 through 1947. He is the author of several Weiser Books titles, including Book of Thoth, Diary of a Drug Fiend, Magick, Book of Lies, Book of the Law and 777 & Other Qabalistic Writings. He was a poet, mountaineer, secret agent, magus, libertine, and prophet – was dubbed by the tabloids “The Wickedest Man in the World.”

Weiser Antiquarian Books Catalog # 78

As always, I am delighted to be able to draw the attention of members and visitors to the latest online catalogue from Weiser Antiquarian. Not only are there many items of great interest to the Crowley collectors here, but also some fascinating snippets of information buried in the book descriptions...

Welcome to this, the seventy-eighth of our on-line catalogs, another of our special lists devoted to books by and about Aleister Crowley.

The catalog is divided into three subsections, the first of which is made up of a select group of used and rare books, letters, and documents, a number of which are signed by Crowley himself. The books include various First Editions, notably Crowley's Eight Lectures on Yoga (1939) in the scarce dustjacket, Magick In Theory and Practice (1930) in 4 parts with color plate, an early printing of Liber Oz (1941) featuring one of the Thoth tarot designs, and the first separate printing of the Hymn to Pan (Circa 1919). The letters are particularly interesting, with three from Crowley to his collaborator on the Thoth deck, Frieda Harris. In one long letter, written from his English "Abbey of Thelema" at Barton Brow, Crowley encourages her to read The Book of the Law, and also discusses, of all things, his attainments as a road-racing cyclist! In another letter he makes reference to his plans for the text that would become known as Liber Oz, and also speaks of his abhorrence for the forthcoming fifth "National Day of Prayer," whilst in the third he gives suggestions about the presentation of the original designs of the Thoth tarot cards, and also expounds upon the issues facing young men growing into adulthood, including the need for them to separate from their mothers, citing C. J. Jung in the process. Other fascinating documents include a three page holograph manuscript in which Crowley outlines his lifetime of literary achievements, a letter from a pharmacist to Crowley demanding payment of his account, with Crowley's note "chemist's crazy letter," and a mysterious selection of papers, termed by Crowley the "Philips dossier." These were clearly of some importance to him, although their actual meaning is obscure.

The second section contains works related to Aleister Crowley, most of which are magazines, although with a few bound books. Amongst the magazines are a good run of the 1970s British Thelemic journal, The New Equinox, and a number of (slightly) more mainstream magazines, including Real - a "men's magazine" from April, 1966 - and High Times, from July, 1978, both of which feature article about Crowley. The third section of the catalog comprises a selection of books by Kenneth Grant, as well as a number of issues of Starfire (1996), the journal of the Typhonian Order.

BEELZEBUB at the BIENNALE

The Biennale Film Program, Magickal Songs, Mythical Histories and Fictitious Truths

NOKO: will be performing a live AV performance of ORDER 41: Conjuration of Beelzebub at the 17th Australian Art Biennale.

noko (Michael Strum, Scott Barnes and Barry Hale) operate at the very fringes of expanded cinema, live performance, music and magick. Their rare public appearances – the last of which took place at the Equinox Festival in London in 2009 – see them engaging in esoteric rituals through abstracted experimental sound and visuals. These visuals mix animation, found footage, documentation of magickal practices and real-time image-capture to create a swirling sea of ever-changing images. Working in broadly the same occult traditions as Harry Smith, they manifest magick as art and their art as magick – for Noko there can be no separation.
