New Memoir Featuring Austin Osman Spare

Written by istaban. Posted in Austin Osman Spare.

It is with great pleasure that Jerusalem Press announce the publication of an invaluable memoir by one of the few remaining people still alive that knew Austin Osman Spare.

Friends and Influences
Gary Sargeant

The author is an artist who as a teenager was nurtured and taken to life-classes by Spare and his sister Nellie. Gary is blind, but the memories are sharp and evocative. Spare, it transpires, set Gary upon his varied career in Art and Design.

Gary paints a much needed 'tactile picture' of Austin Osman Spare, as someone who is more than the 'Occult artist' that many readers will be familiar with.

Here we are introduced to the selfless 'humanist', a generous soul encouraging 'raw talent' without any concern for personal gain. Spare is revealed as a life-long instructor on art, a natural mentor who relished nurturing the creative potential of others.

This uniquely insightful book is sure to be indispensible to anyone seeking a greater understanding of Austin Osman Spare.

The deluxe edition features one of a set of four different hand-numbered prints signed by the author-artist.

AOS Prints For Sale

Written by Ossian Brown. Posted in Austin Osman Spare.

Two limited edition prints of superb artwork by Austin Osman Spare are being made available for purchase: Mask and Effloration...

Presented by Strange Attractor Press in collaboration with artist and musician Ossian Brown, this Mask is one of a number created by Spare in the early 1930s, and shows off his own idiosyncratic take on the Art Deco style to fine effect.

Effloration is a large, stunning and vibrant magical pastel originally exhibited, as was customary for Spare, in two South London pubs – the Mansion House Tavern in 1952 and The White Bear in 1953.

Both (limited to 111 and 65 copies respectively) are Giclée prints presented on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper and produced to archival standards.

Their dimensions match those of the original artworks.

Each print is hand-numbered, blind-embossed with an ‘AOS’ signature, and comes with a certificate of provenance.

The pictures are from Ossian Brown’s collection and have been photographed by Alex Brattell.
