XVI
Alkistis Dimech and Peter Grey (eds)
1st 2010 280pp Scarlet Imprint h/b. Natural linen cloth, embossed cover. Printed throughout in red and black. Illus. Ltd. ed. 700 copies.
“Our civilisation is in crisis. As we confront ecological collapse, political control, wars of terror, and wars on consciousness, we are seeking emergence from this state of emergency. XVI proposes gnostic strategies for liberation. Some will consider this a dangerous and inflammatory book. It is. These provocative essays from the most radical contemporary occult thinkers reveal a creative and passionate engagement with the world. Attacks on our freedoms can lead to freedom, the sudden enlightenment, the lightning path and the initiatory crisis that the tower also represents. XVI seeks to raise magickal awareness of the unique times we find ourselves in, whilst being open to the resourcefulness and indominatable nature of the human spirit to find solutions and responses to it.
This is magick attuned to the zeitgeist. Sex, drugs, art, initiation rites, calls to arms, ritual actions, aeonic plans, revolutionary witchcraft and apocalypse converge in XVI.” A host of excellent magickians/writers and artists make this the essential purchase of 2010. £44.00

VISIONS OF ISOBEL GOWDIE
Magic, shamanism and witchcraft in 17th Century Scotland
Emma Wilby
1st 2010 616pp Sussex Academic Press trade paperback.
The confessions of Isobel Gowdie are widely recognised as the most extraordinary on record in Britain. Their descriptive power and vivid imagery have attracted considerable interest on both academic and popular levels. Among historians, the confessions are celebrated for providing a unique insight into the way fairy beliefs and witch beliefs interacted in the early modern mind; more controversially, they are also cited as evidence for the existence of Shamanistic visionary traditions, of pre-Christian origin, in Scotland in this period. On a popular level the confessions of Isobel Gowdie have, above any other British witch-trial records, influenced the formation of the ritual traditions of Wicca. The author’s discovery of the original trial records (currently being authenticated by the National Archives of Scotland), deemed lost for nearly 200 years, provides a starting point for an interdisciplinary look at the confessions and the woman behind them. £24.99

INVOCATING BY MAGIC CRYSTALS AND MIRRORS
Frederick Hockley
1st 2010 92pp Teitan small hardback. Col. illus. Numbered edition of 600 copies.
Invocating by Magic Crystals and Mirrors contains a full colour facsimile of an original manuscript by Frederick Hockley, a transcription of the text, an Introduction by R. A. Gilbert, and other related material.
Invocating by Magic Crystals and Mirrors is one of Hockley’s own writings. In it he describes the philosophy and method of “crystallomancy” (“crystal gazing” or “scrying through crystals or mirrors”), a practice which has long been associated with ritual magic. John Dee and his seer Edward Kelly were of course famous proponents of the system during the Elizabethan years, and after a period of relative obscurity it had found a new popularity in Spiritualist circles during the nineteenth century. Hockley’s is a short work, that is reproduced from an original manuscript, dated 1869, that he presented to Barbara Honywood, a well-known society Spiritualist of the time. Honywood was said to have mediumistic powers, and it seems likely that Hockley prepared and gave the manuscript to her in the hope that it would excite her interest in the process, and perhaps help induce her to act as his “seer.” £38.50

THE BOOK OF GOLD (LE LIVRE D’OR
A 17th Century Magical Grimoire of Amulets, Charms, Prayers, Sigils and Spells Using the Biblical Psalms of King David
David Rankine and Paul Harry Barron
1st 2010 296pp Avalonia Press.
Le Livre d’Or (The Book of Gold) is a unique 17th century French magical work comprising numerous amulets, charms, prayers, spells and sigils for working with the Biblical Book of the Psalms of King David. Written in a simple style akin to a medieval Book of Secrets combined with magical practices from the ancient world, Le Livre d’Or brings together practices which have their roots in major works from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Cairo Genizah, to the Greek Magical Papyri and Sepher Shimmush Tehillim (Magical Use of the Psalms).
Now translated into English for the first time, this text demonstrates the significance of the Psalms as a unifying and vital thread throughout the development of Western magic. Le Livre d’Or was originally bound as part of Lansdowne MS 1202 with a 17th century French copy of the most important of grimoires, the Key of Solomon. Available in two versions:

Deluxe ed. 2006 317pp Starfire. Col. Frontis. by Stafford Stone. Bound in red cloth with sword motif in white on front bd. Housed in red slipcase. NM. Ltd. ed. 58/81, signed by author. Liber Lilith is a powerful and disturbing book which charts the disintegration of a German occultist, Karl Steiger, who in mysterious circumstances comes across an ancient Gnostic grimoire, long considered lost. This contains the stunning revelation that it was Lilith, Queen of Hell and Mother of all Demons, who fashioned Adam from the clay of the earth, and who visited Eve in the form of a great serpent to teach her the secret wisdom of Heaven. The grimoire reveals in seductive detail a system of sex magic taught to mankind by Lilith, by which she may be summoned as a lover and teacher. The book opens with an introduction by the editor of Steiger’s journal, and follows with a reproduction of the grimoire itself. Next comes the working journal of Steiger, revealing the progress of the ill-starred occultist as he discovers this lost necromantic grimoire, steeps himself in its shadows, and is beguiled by the glamours of Lilith. He is compelled to put into practice the obscene rituals as set out in the grimoire, and he gradually succumbs to madness as Lilith answers his call and he is enmeshed ever deeper in her dark and sinister web. £165.00
