Greetings

Firstly, a note on postal issues. Due to ‘homeland security’, packages to the US can be subjected to lengthy delays clearing customs. As this is beyond my control I would ask US customers to please be patient in this regard. On a related note, recently several packages to the US and European countries have arrived damaged (one looked like it had been run over by a truck – completely destroyed). I believe my postage rates to be reasonable and I always obtain proof of posting. However, the methods I send by carry standard insurance of GBP41.00 only. If you wish to insure your items for the full value, please get in contact and I’ll will let you know the additional charge. In the past I have made good will gestures of refunding the full amount but this is no longer viable.

THE AUTHENTIC RED DRAGON/THE BLACK HEN
Translated from the French Edition of 1521
by Joshua A. Wentworth, With an Introduction by Silens Manus
1st 2011 208pp Teitan Press small hardback. Ltd. ed. 800 copies.
Le Véritable Dragon Rouge, or as it is more commonly known, Le Dragon Rouge (The Red Dragon) is one of the most notorious of the little books of black magic known as grimoires. This Teitan Press publication includes a complete facsimile of the earliest known edition – a French printing that is dated 1521 (although it was probably actually published in the early 1800s) – along with a complete English translation by Joshua A. Wentworth. It is prefaced with a thoughtful and sometimes humorous Introduction by Silens Manus.
The text of Le Dragon Rouge is typical of grimoires of the time, and is clearly related to the Grand Grimoire. Its anonymous author claims that the work is derived from the wisdom of the legendary King Solomon, and then sets down instructions for the creation of a number of magical implements: blasting rod (wand), talisman and magic circle, that are to be used to summon the demon “Lucifugé Rofocale,” who is then bound over to serve the sorcerer. In the process a great many sub-demons are named, and their attributes listed. This is followed by a series of magic spells or recipes for various purposes; from making oneself invisible, to winning the affections of another, to the cure of various common ailments. The book ends with a chart of lucky and unlucky days and a short version of the treasure-finding text known as La Poule Noire (The Black Hen). Le Dragon Rouge was very popular in early nineteenth century France, going through a number of clandestine and semi-clandestine printings, and is still said to be one of the most highly revered magic texts in certain Voodoo circles in Haiti. £36.50

Founded in 1975 during a schism from The Church of Satan, this is Aquino’s scarce received work, originally issued internally. The first section is a facsimile of Aquino’s hand written original version, followed by a commentary and analysis, all printed on one side of the page only. This copy is particularly notable for having a signed and inscribed message underneath the limitation. “For Forry, with admiration and affection. Xeper. Michael A. Aquino. July 14th, XI.” Though not explicitly stated, “Forry” is Forrest Ackerman, founder of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. The inscription is beautifully written and matches the style of the facsimile manuscript. A rare association item. £895.00

1st edition, second issue. 1944/2007 Weiser. Half leather over papered boards with Egyptian design. VG+. The history of this item is fascinating. Found in a printer’s crate in the Noel Fitzgerald collection were 11 complete sets of unbound sheets for the first edition Book of Thoth. In 2007 Weiser sourced binding material as close to the original edition as possible, includer Niger leather and facsimile Egyptian patterned paper. The result is this magnificent recreation. Not a reprint, but a second issue of the first edition. Ltd. ed. 11 copies only. Limitation plate tipped into inside front board. This copy comes with significant extras. As the original sheets were not signed as in the first edition, an original two page holograph letter from Crowley to Frieda Harris is included. Very good condition, this is a short and chatty letter, signed Aleister. Also included is a four page booklet detailing how this edition came into being. This is printed on original mould made paper that was found along with the printed sheets. In addition this particular copy also includes the 40pp Weiser catalogue which originally advertised this book along with other rare Thoth related material. Another significant extra is an original 20pp catalogue for the exhibition of Thoth Tarot art from 1941. VG+ condition, though as with most copies, this has a clipped title page, removing the gallery details (this was done by Frieda Harris at Crowley’s behest). A wonderful collection. £2650.00

Page from a sketchbook, from the Frank Letchford collection. Consists of three images; the main image on the right of the page appears to be one of Spare’s pendulous hermaphrodites sitting on the shoulders of a demon with a crescent moon in between. Top left image is a female figure in profile. Most interesting is the image at lower left, which is a self portrait with the word ‘conjuration’ written in pencil above it. Spare appears to be conjuring using a statue or figurine. A nice piece. £895.00

110321. AUSTIN OSMAN SPARE: AOS/VERA WAINWRIGHT 3 VOL. SET
2007 3 vols. IHO landscape hardbacks. Illus. Black faux leather binding with blind stamped spare design. NM. Ltd. ed. 8/59. Comprises 3 uniform volumes:
Drawings by Austin Osman Spare for V.S.W., A drawing book of 24 images drawn by Spare for Vera in 1944 when Spare visited her in Helston, Cornwall. The title page has a image by Spare of his (horned) head merging upwards into a profile of Vera Wainwright. The original cover of the drawing book carrying Spare’s inscription to Wainwright is also reproduced
Vera Wainwright and Austin Osman Spare, Poems and Masks. 44pp Poems and masks was initially published by the Toucan Press in 1968, the same Channel Island publisher which issued Gull’s Beak and Black to Black by Kenneth Grant. The biographical note and introduction to this edition plus that of the second US edition are reproduced as are the poems plus 8 additional ones, previously unpublished. Spare’s illustrations are reproduced together with other relevant vignettes and illustrations, though the original illustrations are carefully identified thus.
Vera Wainwright and Austin Spare, Poetry and Art, 80pp. A 2pp illustrated article discusses Spare’s use of the mask icon in his philosophy whilst further testament to its significance in Spare’s circle is here testified to by the inclusion of a short story by Frederick Carter edited and provided an introduction for Spare’s Focus of Life. The story, illustrated with vignettes of Spare’s use of masks in his art. A yarn of an artistic genius who moves from wax work faces to major art fraud revealing occult mysteries relating to Rosicrucianism and Shakespeare.
Spare and Wainwright planned to publish together a monthly magazine to be called “Art and Letter”. Spare’s design for a title page including hoped for contributors is reproduced plus some relevant letters from Wainwright to Spare. Then follow 8 short stories by Wainwright; some are very short indeed, literary vignettes really. These are far more explicitly occult than her poems. They are by no means cosy with two describing the perception of indescribable horror. In another an enigmatic stranger proves to be a nature spirit. Suitable illustrations supplied by Spare to Wainwright including a very fine satyr’s head. One drawing featuring a wrecked cart axle forming a crucifix with a tree with a crow torn to pieces in the foreground explicitly illustrates the last story presented “Corporate Worship”. In this enigmatic tale the narrator eschews prayer in church to worship in nature only to find the vicar, who is also some form of animal spirit, leading her in prayer there. A further section reproduces Spare’s drafts for Poems and Masks. Mostly very rough but with some striking, quite finished, faces that were not used, despite them being far more married to the text than those that were.
Loosely inserted is an original handwritten letter from Wainwright to Spare and also a cheque signed by Spare. £225.00
