POMBA GIRA AND THE QUIMBANDA OF MBUMBA NZILA
Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold
1st 2011 232pp Scarlet Imprint. 13 erotic illus. plus 40 pontos riscados. Red moiré silk covered boards with letterpress panel.
A significant study on the cult of Pomba Gira, this is the most comprehensive work in the English language on the Devil’s mistress, whose Brazilian cult has bewitched so many.
It is a book that those seeking congress with the current of strong female magical sexuality have long desired.
A beguiling spirit, Pomba Gira gives solace to the broken hearted, vengeance for the wronged, and a fierce path for those that would take her as muse.
In Pomba Gira Frisvold gives explicit workings, baths and waters, her songs and chants. Her plant allies among the nightshades are described in a full herbarium.
The attractions and dangers for both men and women who make cult to her are presented, as are her many faces. Pomba Gira has origins in the witchcraft of Portugal, the Basque Country as well as Congo and the native influences of Brazil.
The witchcraft fusion makes her cult particularly accessible to Westerners whose own traditions share much ground with Quimbanda.
Frisvold carefully unravels the skeins, revealing her origin in historical figures such as Maria Padilha, but more deeply still through archetype and myth to the very essence of her skin shedding nature.
He finds the origin of her name in Congo, the cult of divine possession amongst the slave camps of Brazil, and brings us through to her more modern manifestations and his personal work with the Queen of the Fig Tree in Hell. As an initiate and devotee, he gives an insider’s view with the same respect and experience he demonstrates in Palo Mayombe: The Garden of Blood and Bones.
We walk through the Queendoms of Lyre, Cemetery, Sepulchres, Streets, Crossroads, Wilderness, Soul, Oceanshore and Calunga.
The workings of twenty four different Pomba Giras are given, from Cigana the gypsy to the split skull face of Rosa Caveira.
Through the razor blades in honey, the cigarette smoke and the sweet anisette spilt in the graveyard, Pomba Gira takes seductive shape.
Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold is an anthropologist and psychologist who over the course of the last fifteen years been studying, both academically and practically, African and Afro-derived cults in the New World. This has led to a multiplicity of initiations into Vodou, both from Benin and Haiti, Santeria, Kimbanda, Palo Mayombe and Ifá. He makes part of the council of elders in the Ogboni society of Abeokuta, Nigeria. This is a significant expansion of the material first presented by Frisvold in his early work on the subject Kiumbanda which focussed on Exu. He has for the last decade lived in Brazil where his studies and involvement in traditional forms of metaphysics, faith, cult and witchcraft is a constant theme in his life. £40.00

ABRAHAM THE JEW ON MAGIC TALISMANS
From a manuscript by Frederick Hockley
1st 2011 102pp Teitan Press. Illus. Ltd. ed. 800 copies.
Abraham the Jew on Magic Talismans is a previously-unpublished manuscript by Frederick Hockley, probably transcribed by him circa 1850 from an earlier work. The manuscript deals with the creation of talismans, and is divided into two parts, the first of which details methods for their manufacture “under the fixed stars” and the second “under the twenty-eight mansions of the moon.” Both sets of concepts were popular in mediaeval and later European astrological and magical practice, having apparently been incorporated into them from Arabic astronomical and astrological treatises composed during the “Golden Age” of Arabic science from the middle of the eighth to the middle of the thirteenth centuries
This first published edition comprises an Introduction in which Silens Manus explores the history of the manuscript, and its relationship with other early magical works, notably those of Cornelius Agrippa. It is followed by a typeset transcription of the text of the manuscript, with explanatory footnotes, etc., and a reproduction of various relevant passages from the 1651 edition of Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy. The final section is a facsimile of the original manuscript, printed on special coated paper that gives a photograph like quality to the reproduction. £44.99

Drawings by Austin Osman Spare for V.S.W., A drawing book of 24 images drawn by Spare for Vera in 1944 when Spare visited her in Helston, Cornwall. The title page has a image by Spare of his (horned) head merging upwards into a profile of Vera Wainwright. The original cover of the drawing book carrying Spare’s inscription to Wainwright is also reproduced
Vera Wainwright and Austin Osman Spare, Poems and Masks. 44pp Poems and masks was initially published by the Toucan Press in 1968, the same Channel Island publisher which issued Gull’s Beak and Black to Black by Kenneth Grant. The biographical note and introduction to this edition plus that of the second US edition are reproduced as are the poems plus 8 additional ones, previously unpublished. Spare’s illustrations are reproduced together with other relevant vignettes and illustrations, though the original illustrations are carefully identified thus.
Vera Wainwright and Austin Spare, Poetry and Art, 80pp. A 2pp illustrated article discusses Spare’s use of the mask icon in his philosophy whilst further testament to its significance in Spare’s circle is here testified to by the inclusion of a short story by Frederick Carter edited and provided an introduction for Spare’s Focus of Life. The story, illustrated with vignettes of Spare’s use of masks in his art. A yarn of an artistic genius who moves from wax work faces to major art fraud revealing occult mysteries relating to Rosicrucianism and Shakespeare.
Spare and Wainwright planned to publish together a monthly magazine to be called “Art and Letter”. Spare’s design for a title page including hoped for contributors is reproduced plus some relevant letters from Wainwright to Spare. Then follow 8 short stories by Wainwright; some are very short indeed, literary vignettes really. These are far more explicitly occult than her poems. They are by no means cosy with two describing the perception of indescribable horror. In another an enigmatic stranger proves to be a nature spirit. Suitable illustrations supplied by Spare to Wainwright including a very fine satyr’s head. One drawing featuring a wrecked cart axle forming a crucifix with a tree with a crow torn to pieces in the foreground explicitly illustrates the last story presented “Corporate Worship”. In this enigmatic tale the narrator eschews prayer in church to worship in nature only to find the vicar, who is also some form of animal spirit, leading her in prayer there. A further section reproduces Spare’s drafts for Poems and Masks. Mostly very rough but with some striking, quite finished, faces that were not used, despite them being far more married to the text than those that were.
Loosely inserted is an original handwritten letter from Wainwright to Spare and also a cheque signed by Spare. £300.00

111055E. DONALD TYSON: LIBER LILITH
Deluxe ed. 2006 317pp Starfire. Col. Frontis. by Stafford Stone. Bound in red cloth with nail motif in white on front bd. Housed in red slipcase. NM. Ltd. ed. 65/81, signed by author. Liber Lilith is a powerful and disturbing book which charts the disintegration of a German occultist, Karl Steiger, who in mysterious circumstances comes across an ancient Gnostic grimoire, long considered lost. This contains the stunning revelation that it was Lilith, Queen of Hell and Mother of all Demons, who fashioned Adam from the clay of the earth, and who visited Eve in the form of a great serpent to teach her the secret wisdom of Heaven. The grimoire reveals in seductive detail a system of sex magic taught to mankind by Lilith, by which she may be summoned as a lover and teacher. The book opens with an introduction by the editor of Steiger’s journal, and follows with a reproduction of the grimoire itself. Next comes the working journal of Steiger, revealing the progress of the ill-starred occultist as he discovers this lost necromantic grimoire, steeps himself in its shadows, and is beguiled by the glamours of Lilith. He is compelled to put into practice the obscene rituals as set out in the grimoire, and he gradually succumbs to madness as Lilith answers his call and he is enmeshed ever deeper in her dark and sinister web. £250.00
