Heather Tom, recently of Broadway’s Prymate, will star in Moonchild, a new play written by Maureen FitzGerald and directed by Alex Lippard, which will be part of the New York International Fringe Festival. It will run Aug. 14-28 at the Access Theater, 380 Broadway between White and Walker Streets.
Based on actual events, Moonchild “examines the relationship between a young, broke and struggling L. Ron Hubbard and the brilliant, half-crazed rocket scientist Jack Parsons, a Satanist and disciple of the infamous Aleister Crowley,” according to press materials. “Playwright Maureen FitzGerald speculates on how a meeting between two of the twentieth century’s most controversial figures led to the birth of a multi-million dollar empire.”
Hubbard founded the Church of Scientology, an organization many have described as a cult, but which boasts as members several major Hollywood actors.
Also in the cast are Jonathan Cantor, Davis Hall, Mardie Millit, Andrew Shulman and Abby Wathen.
Hubbard’s career was also the inspiration of the Obie Award-honored 2003 musical A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant.
Tickets are $15. Call (212) 279-4488 or visit www.fringenyc.org
