Treadwells Bookshop – Covent Garden, London – is presenting a talk on Thursday 4 November: LOVE, DEATH & WITCHCRAFT IN THE 17TH CENTURY – Magic in the Paintings of Salvator Rosa.

“Rosa painted works on magic and witchcraft, and is said to have dabbled in black magic and alchemy himself. One fan has called him ‘the precursor of every gothic revivalist’. Rosa was also a poet, satirist, actor, and musician, and his poetry in particular adds even more information.”
LOVE,DEATH & WITCHCRAFT IN THE 17TH CENTURY – Magic in the Paintings of Salvator Rosa
4 November (Thursday)
Dr John Callow
7.15 for 7.30 pm – £5.00

Research into the history of magic tends to be based solely on documentary sources.

Tonight’s speaker, uses another source: paintings. In this talk John Callow talks us through love magic beliefs as they are illustrated in the works of Italian baroque painter Salvator Rosa (1615 – 1673).

Rosa painted works on magic and witchcraft, and is said to have dabbled in black magic and alchemy himself. One fan has called him ‘the precursor of every gothic revivalist’. Rosa was also a poet, satirist, actor, and musician, and his poetry in particular adds even more information.

The speaker, John Callow, recently completed his doctorate in history at the University of Lancaster; he has published on witchcraft and magic in early modern Europe. The talk is followed by questions and open discussion, then an informal wine reception on the shop floor. Email or ring to book.
