There are lots of books about Crowley’s Thoth Tarot and some of them really suck. But this new one at least seems to be pretty interesting:
Claas Hoffmann: NUIT – Aleister Crowley’s Liber AL and the Thoth Tarot – Volume I
The book is in German and English and is published by Akron Verlags AG, it’s a large softcover book.
Mr. Hoffmann is a regular contributor to the German Thelemic magazine AHA. Some of his essays – contained also in this book – on Lady Frieda Harris or Thelema and the Apocalypse are really pretty juicy in my opinion. From the Introduction: »This new Tarot may therefore be regarded as a series of illustrations to the Book of the Law; the doctrine of the book is everywhere implicit.« (Book of Thoth, Samuel Weiser, page 115-116). […] With the publication of »Nuit – Aleister Crowley Liber AL and the Thoth tarot« is shown how inseperable Crowley’s Tarot and Liber AL are. It shows the complete illustration of the 66 verses of the first chapter ofLiber AL, using collages of tarot cards. The obvious connections between the cards and Liber AL supports the understanding of Crowley’s channeling and helps as well to realize the meaning of the card’s symbolism.
Although I have not read it completely yet I think it might be interesting to some here, especially some of Mr. Hoffmann’s thoughts about the “projective synthetic geometry” found in the backgrounds of the cards, and on which he bases his collages of the cards.
