The scholarly introduction gives precise details of the source documents and places the texts into their historical context, naming the occultists who worked with these techniques. There is some forthright criticism of later misrepreseantation of such occult traditions. The book then presents three important related magical texts which date from the middle of the 17th Century:-
1) Janua Magica Reserata, or Keys to the Gateway of Magic. This text commences with pious discussion of nature of the soul, perhaps to make the rest text more palatable to religious authorities. The nature of angels is discussed before presenting a cosmology of angels and “spirits of darkness”. The system draws on the concept of angelic heirachies attributed to the four directions and the Tree of Life. Many attributions are given with much discussion as to the nature of spiritual beings both angelic and demonic. The”Orders of Wicked Demons” are discussed at some length and there is also some mention of incubi and succubi, “domestical” spirits (poltergiests” hobgoblins and faeries such as “Robin Goodfellow”
2) Dr. Rudd’s Nine Hierarchies of Angels with their Invocations To Visible Appearance with the Nine Great Celestial Keys of Angelical Invocations. This text gives detailed instructions for skrying, describes what occurs just before a spirit materialises and gives advice for dealing with spirits. Then the Keys or Invocations for the main angels of each of the nine hierachies of angels. There is then a discussion as to how to discern Benovolent Angels and Elementals from Infernal beings.
3) The Demon Princes. This text describes how to use the names of the four Demon Princes to enforce obedience of lesser servitor spirits.
This is the second volume of the David Rankine and Stephen Skinners excellent Source Works of Ceremonial Magic series. This work maintains the high standards of scolarship and impressive material presented.
