Convolvulus at Caduceus

Eagerly awaited for quite some time, Convolvulus has at last appeared.

Opinions about Kenneth Grant’s role in Thelema vary, of course, but few can doubt the strength and beauty of much of his poetry.

An email list circulated today by Caduceus Books includes a detailed description of the book and its contents.

Kenneth Grant, Convovulus And Other Poems, With Drawings By Austin Osman Spare, Starfire 2005e.v. An. 101. Hardback in dustwrapper188pp This work reprints Black to Black and Other Poems which was issued by Carfax in 1963 in a rare limited edition as well as the Gull’s Beak and Other Poems which was published by the Toucan Press in 1970, also very scarce. However the bulk of the book is the hitherto unpublished collection entitled Convovulus, Poems of Love and the Other Darkness.

The preliminary pages of Gull’s Beak quotes Arthur Machen “There is a world elsewhere, its speech is called poetry” The ethos of this work is that poetry can go beyond the recording of experience and become direct experience itself for both poet and reader. It can be a transcend the tendency of an ego to identify with one body and allow glimpses of consciousness beyond of ego. Thus, these poems are a vehicle for Grant’s magickal endeavour.

Steffi Grant oversaw the marriage of previously unpublished drawings by Spare with the text. These are stylishly reproduced, some in green others in monotone, one juxtaposed with its negative on the opposite page and another reproduced in negative. The coloured endpapers decorated with a tableaux derived from Spare’s drawings. It is cunningly marriage achieved by someone who herself has the eye of an artist, the vision of a magician and unique appreciation of poet and, indeed artist. The result is an elegant and important book that is a departure from the format of previous books by the publisher. Starfire went to immense efforts the realise the vision and is to be congratulated for the quality of reproduction. The book captures the shades of grey that are so often lost when Spare’s pencil work is reproduced. Altogether an excellent and handsome book, an important addition to the Typhonian corpus It should be noted that only 750 have been printed. A smaller print run than is usual for this publisher. It may sell out quickly..

It should be mentioned, of course, that the book is also available from other sources.
