It was a pleasure to visit Treadwell’s last week — albeit briefly…
I’m pleased to be able to mention a Treadwell’s event due for Monday 10 April.
The Book of the Law: Liber AL vel Legis
A World Premiere of a new musical setting by composer Steve Tromans
At The Vortex Jazz Club in Stoke Newington £5.00
Treadwell’s invites you to celebrate the Crowleyan Book of the Law this year with a night out at a Premiere evening, launching a piece of experimental, challenging, high culture. Join the Treadwell’s outing to this world premiere at which composer/pianist Tromans performs the musical piece in which he has set three chapters of The Book of the Law for narrator, piano and drums/percussion.
Who is the composer? Steve Tromans is a world-travelled, highly-regarded composer of contemporary music.
His 2004/5 piece, Howl, a musical setting of the poetry of Allen Ginsberg, toured the UK at the Cheltenham International Jazz Festival, Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, StAnza Poetry Festival in St Andrews, The Vortex Jazz Club, Glastonbury Festival and Between The Lines Festival in Belfast.
What’s his music like? “From cacophony to lyricism, from fury to love … leaves audiences breathless and exhilarated in equal measure.” (Aldeburgh Poetry Festival 2005).
He is also deeply engaged with Crowley’s ideas about magic and the universe.
Treadwell’s is part sponsoring this event, and is hosting an informal gathering afterward. To find the venue, look on http://www.vortexjazz.co.uk/location.html: it’s around the corner from Dalston Kingsland Rail Station.
