Allan Bennett AKA Ananda Metteyya by Phil Baker

A key figure in early British Buddhism, Allan Bennett was a man of multiple identities including Charles Bennett, Frater Voco, Allan MacGregor, and Ananda Metteyya. This talk will attempt to make sense of them, following its subject from science and ritual magic in 1890s London to Buddhism in Ceylon and Burma, before his return to Britain in a heroic attempt to bring ‘the Empire of Righteousness’ to the West.

About the speaker:

Phil Baker’s books include a cultural history of absinthe, a study of Samuel Beckett, and biographies of the popular writer Dennis Wheatley and the artist Austin Osman Spare. He is researching Allan Bennett for the Dictionary of National Biography.
