I hope this isn't too off-topic, but the journalist and spiritualist Hannen Swaffer or "Swaff" was a close friend and champion of Spare. He was a visitor to Spare's first exhibition at Walworth in 1904, became his friend in the 1920s, and ended up paying for his funeral in 1956. For anorak fun, compare the autograph he writes here with his signature on his 1954 Christmas card to Spare in Letchford's Michaelangelo in a Teacup!
Thanks Chris for this, Ghosts are getting fewer and far between...anoraks at the ready!
Regards
Jamie
It's not at all off-topic, Chris. Swaffer wrote some extremely interesting articles about Spare over the years. One of the most interesting series of pictures in the 1955 exhibition is 'Materialisations Witnessed'.
