1m20s into this interview Al Jourgensen  (ex school-teacher turned 80s synth-band singer and then electro industrial-band pioneer) here talks about AC and The Book of Lies as an influence.

It's said that Johnny Deppp based his Captain Jack character on his pal Al.

80s synth-band

Never got into this band, I'm guessing that's their earlier stuff then, this one sounds more "hard rock"-ish. I can listen to a bit of anything though 80s synth stuff is a fave these days.

Don't know anything about this guy, he seems like an archetypal Spinal Tap "douche" here (nothing wrong with that). He pronounces it "KRAU-ley" so I don't know how much occult influence he had. I like the nostalgia of these VHS clips.

"Lies" was my first AC book I got when I was a dumb youngster, after reading RAW going on about him. It probably wasn't the best choice of first AC book, all the terms were just "arcane gibberish" but sounded cool. It took a long time to start to make any sense. I don't have the physical book anymore, I'm happy enough with pdfs, its ideal for someone with a short attention span like me with its short chapters.

He's an ex-school teacher unlike the Spinal Tap neanderthal idiots.

I know, I watched it, I'm always listening to music in the background and put that album on. Now listening to their earlier stuff.

🤨 Have I just fallen into an irony singularity?

Like I said, he pronounced it "KRAU-ley", which suggested he wasn't overly familiar with him. Just trying to contribute to the thread if you have any more info. I may be a dumb-dumb but others may show up and give some input.

I never said you were dumb but how was I to know you went away and checked Ministry out?  😀

I'm not going to start saying Crow-ley now.  I too say 'Krau-lee' myself.

Rhymes with "Holy", not with "foul-ly".

Golden Dawn from the album The Land of Rape and Honey samples Crowley.

By "dumb" I just meant on the subject I don't have much to contribute. This thread looked a bit neglected so tried to move it along. Do you have any more info on this "Al" gentleman and his connections to AC/the occult?

@xon

Thanks, I'll put that one on.

To clear up any confusion (or add to it), I wrote KRAU as in sauerKRAUt (the "o" "should" rhyme with the "o" in... Rambo 😉 ).

Yeah, Krau-ley is the normal pronunciation for that surname. I don't know exactly why his family pronounced it differently, its the only instance of it I've heard. I suspect its a case of "Mrs. Bucket" going on somewhere in the family tree (for those who don't know, there was an old UK sitcom with a snobbish middle-class old lady who always insisted on her surname being pronounced "bouquet").

It just occurred that that song would have been one of the few easy ways to hear Crowley's voice at that time(1988).

Discogs lists 1986 as the  release of a version of Crowley's wax cylinders. The words printed on the back cover according to the notes is nice: "... Consideration of others - compassion - is the most important quality we can possess. May confusion be dispersed. May all sentient beings achieve happiness and liberation."

This is a great mash-up of Ministry and Édith Piaf:

Spoiler
English translation of lyrics
This demon who burns my heart
This angel who dries my tears
This was you, Jezebel, this was you
These tears impaled with joy
Jezebel, this was you... Jezebel, this was you

But the love is destroyed
Everything in my life has tumbled down
Crushing, trampling, taking my heart away
Jezebel, but, for you
I'd walk across the whole world
I'd go to the bottom of hell
Where are you? Jezebel, where are you?

The memories which we believe have faded
Are living things
There is still a password within the eyes of the dying
But my heart is punctured with obsession
It beats again and again
Deep inside of me
The word which I love is
Your name...
Jezebel... Jezebel

But the love is destroyed
Everything in my life has tumbled down
Crushing, trampling, taking my heart away
Jezebel, but, for you
I'd walk across the whole world
I'd go to the bottom of hell
Crying, without stopping
Day and night
Jezebel... Jezebel...
Jezebel!

It looks astonishingly like (Rod Hull &) Emu to me!

For those not in the know, Rod was a 70s "ventriloquist" whose puppet Emu did not only not resemble an emu, or duck, but any known life form on the planet.  His shtick was to - in some cases quite violently - assault and attack any person "he" came within range of after giving them a quizzical and often somewhat intimidating "sizing up and down".  Astonishingly enough this could be a lot funnier than it might sound, and particularly so the more famous or pompous the victim.  (Or maybe it just appealed to my idiosyncratic sense of humour! There's probably clips on youtube if you're curious; I don't have the time to insert one at present.)

Please note this won't mean anything now since the avatar picture was subsequently changed to what looks like a little red rooster...

Sorry, we went off on a tangent there. @jamiejbarter bringing up Rod Hull of all people on this thread was so incongruous and absurd that combined with the silliness of April 1st it made me get a bit carried away.

This thread can now be steered back to the topic of this "Jourgensen" gentleman.
