Now here's an odd item from The Telegraph. Thanks to Frater IR for bringing it to my attention. Very strange...

The internet mystery that has the world baffled

For the past two years, a mysterious online organisation has been setting the world's finest code-breakers a series of seemingly unsolveable problems. But to what end? Welcome to the world of Cicada 3301

By Chris Bell

One evening in January last year, Joel Eriksson, a 34-year-old computer analyst from Uppsala in Sweden, was trawling the web, looking for distraction, when he came across a message on an internet forum. The message was in stark white type, against a black background.

“Hello,” it said. “We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test. There is a message hidden in this image. Find it, and it will lead you on the road to finding us. We look forward to meeting the few that will make it all the way through. Good luck.”

The message was signed: "3301”.

A self-confessed IT security "freak” and a skilled cryptographer, Eriksson’s interest was immediately piqued. This was – he knew – an example of digital steganography: the concealment of secret information within a digital file. Most often seen in conjunction with image files, a recipient who can work out the code – for example, to alter the colour of every 100th pixel – can retrieve an entirely different image from the randomised background "noise”.

It’s a technique more commonly associated with nefarious ends, such as concealing child pornography. In 2002 it was suggested that al-Qaeda operatives had planned the September 11 attacks via the auction site eBay, by encrypting messages inside digital photographs.

Sleepily – it was late, and he had work in the morning – Eriksson thought he’d try his luck decoding the message from "3301”. After only a few minutes work he’d got somewhere: a reference to "Tiberius Claudius Caesar” and a line of meaningless letters. Joel deduced it might be an embedded "Caesar cipher” – an encryption technique named after Julius Caesar, who used it in private correspondence. It replaces characters by a letter a certain number of positions down the alphabet. As Claudius was the fourth emperor, it suggested "four” might be important – and lo, within minutes, Eriksson found another web address buried in the image’s code.

Feeling satisfied, he clicked the link.

It was a picture of a duck with the message: "Woops! Just decoys this way. Looks like you can’t guess how to get the message out.”

"If something is too easy or too routine, I quickly lose interest,” says Eriksson. "But it seemed like the challenge was a bit harder than a Caesar cipher after all. I was hooked.”

Eriksson didn’t realise it then, but he was embarking on one of the internet’s most enduring puzzles; a scavenger hunt that has led thousands of competitors across the web, down telephone lines, out to several physical locations around the globe, and into unchartered areas of the "darknet”. So far, the hunt has required a knowledge of number theory, philosophy and classical music. An interest in both cyberpunk literature and the Victorian occult has also come in handy as has an understanding of Mayan numerology.

It has also featured a poem, a tuneless guitar ditty, a femme fatale called "Wind” who may, or may not, exist in real life, and a clue on a lamp post in Hawaii. Only one thing is certain: as it stands, no one is entirely sure what the challenge – known as Cicada 3301 – is all about or who is behind it. Depending on who you listen to, it’s either a mysterious secret society, a statement by a new political think tank, or an arcane recruitment drive by some quasi-military body. Which means, of course, everyone thinks it’s the CIA.

For some, it’s just a fun game, like a more complicated Sudoku; for others, it has become an obsession. Almost two years on, Eriksson is still trying to work out what it means for him. "It is, ultimately, a battle of the brains,” he says. "And I have always had a hard time resisting a challenge.”

On the night of January 5 2012, after reading the "decoy” message from the duck, Eriksson began to tinker with other variables.

Taking the duck’s mockery as a literal clue, Eriksson decided to run it through a decryption program called OutGuess. Success: another hidden message, this time linking to another messageboard on the massively popular news forum Reddit. Here, encrypted lines from a book were being posted every few hours. But there were also strange symbols comprising of several lines and dots – Mayan numbers, Eriksson realised. And duly translated, they led to another cipher.

Up until now, Eriksson would admit, none of the puzzles had really required any advanced skills, or suggested anything other than a single anonymous riddle-poser having some fun. "But then it all changed,” says Eriksson. "And things started getting interesting.”

Suddenly, the encryption techniques jumped up a gear. And the puzzles themselves mutated in several different directions: hexadecimal characters, reverse-engineering, prime numbers. Pictures of the cicada insect – reminiscent of the moth imagery in Thomas Harris’s The Silence of the Lambs – became a common motif.

"I knew cicadas only emerge every prime number of years – 13, or 17 – to avoid synchronising with the life cycles of their predators,” says Eriksson. "It was all starting to fit together.” The references became more arcane too. The book, for example, turned out to be "The Lady of the Fountain”, a poem about King Arthur taken from The Mabinogion, a collection of pre-Christian medieval Welsh manuscripts.

Later, the puzzle would lead him to the cyberpunk writer William Gibson – specifically his 1992 poem "Agrippa” (a book of the dead), infamous for the fact that it was only published on a 3.5in floppy disk, and was programmed to erase itself after being read once. But as word spread across the web, thousands of amateur codebreakers joined the hunt for clues. Armies of users of 4chan, the anarchic internet forum where the first Cicada message is thought to have appeared, pooled their collective intelligence – and endless free time – to crack the puzzles.

Within hours they’d decoded "The Lady of the Fountain”. The new message, however, was another surprise: "Call us,” it read, "at telephone number 214-390-9608”. By this point, only a few days after the original image was posted, Eriksson had taken time off work to join the pursuit full time.

"This was definitely an unexpected turn,” he recalls. "And the first hint that this might not just be the work of a random internet troll.” Although now disconnected, the phone line was based in Texas, and led to an answering machine. There, a robotic voice told them to find the prime numbers in the original image. By multiplying them together, the solvers found a new prime and a new website: 845145127.com. A countdown clock and a huge picture of a cicada confirmed they were on the right path.

"It was thrilling, breathtaking by now,” says Eriksson. "This shared feeling of discovery was immense. But the plot was about to thicken even more.” Once the countdown reached zero, at 5pm GMT on January 9, it showed 14 GPS coordinates around the world: locations in Warsaw, Paris, Seattle, Seoul, Arizona, California, New Orleans, Miami, Hawaii and Sydney. Sat in Sweden, Eriksson waited as, around the globe, amateur solvers left their apartments to investigate. And, one by one reported what they’d found: a poster, attached to a lamp post, bearing the cicada image and a QR code (the black-and-white bar code often seen on adverts these days and designed to take you to a website via your smartphone).

"It was exhilarating,” said Eriksson. "I was suddenly aware of how much effort they must have been putting into creating this kind of challenge.” For the growing Cicada community, it was explosive – proof this wasn’t merely some clever neckbeard in a basement winding people up, but actually a global organisation of talented people. But who?

Speculation had been rife since the image first appeared. Some thought Cicada might merely be a PR stunt; a particularly labyrinthine Alternate Reality Game (ARG) built by a corporation to ultimately – and disappointingly – promote a new movie or car.

Microsoft, for example, had enjoyed huge success with their critically acclaimed "I Love Bees” ARG campaign. Designed to promote the Xbox game Halo 2 in 2004, it used random payphones worldwide to broadcast a War of the Worlds-style radio drama that players would have to solve.

But there were complicating factors to Cicada. For one, the organisers were actively working against the participants. One "solver”, a female known only as Wind from Michigan, contributed to the quest on several messageboards before the community spotted she was deliberately disseminating false clues. Other interference was more pointed. One long, cautionary diatribe, left anonymously on the website Pastebin, claimed to be from an ex-Cicada member – a non-English military officer recruited to the organisation "by a superior”. Cicada, he said, "was a Left-Hand Path religion disguised as a progressive scientific organisation” – comprising of "military officers, diplomats, and academics who were dissatisfied with the direction of the world”. Their plan, the writer claimed, was to transform humanity into the Nietzschen Übermensch.

"This is a dangerous organisation,” he concluded, "their ways are nefarious.” With no other clues, it was also asssumed by many to be a recruitment drive by the CIA, MI6 or America’s National Security Agency (NSA), as part of a search for highly talented cryptologists. It wouldn’t have been the first time such tactics had been used.

Back in 2010, for example, Air Force Cyber Command – the United States’ hacking defence force, based at Fort Meade in Maryland – secretly embedded a complex hexadecimal code in their new logo. Cybercom head Lt Gen Keith Alexander then challenged the world’s amateur analysts to crack it (it took them three hours). And in September this year, GCHQ launched the "Can You Find It?” initiative – a series of cryptic codes designed to root out the best British cryptographers. As GCHQ’s head of resourcing Jane Jones said at the time, "It’s a puzzle but it’s also a serious test – the jobs on offer here are vital to protecting national security.”

GCHQ's 'Can You Find It?' puzzle

Dr Jim Gillogly, former president of the American Cryptogram Association, has been cracking similar codes for years and says it’s a tried and tested recruitment tactic.

"During the Second World War, the top-secret Government Code and Cypher School used crossword puzzles printed in The Daily Telegraph to identify good candidates for Bletchley Park,” he says. "But I’m not sure the CIA or NSA is behind Cicada. Both are careful with security, the recent Snowden case notwithstanding. And starting the puzzle on [the anarchic internet forum] 4chan might attract people with less respect for authority than they would want working inside.”

But that doesn’t rule out other organisations. "Computer and data security is more important than ever today,” says Dr Gillogly. The proliferation of wireless devices, mobile telephones, e-commerce websites like Amazon and chip-and-pin machines, means the demand for cryptologists has never been higher. (Something the UK government acknowledged last year when it announced it was setting up 11 academic "centres of excellence” in cyber security research.)

"One of the more important components of security systems is the efficacy of the cryptography being used,” says Dr Gillogly. "Which means cryptanalysts are in higher demand than ever before - no longer just with the intelligence services. It could just as easily be a bank or software company [behind Cicada].”

Eriksson himself agrees. As a regular speaker at Black Hat Briefings – the secretive computer security conferences where government agencies and corporations get advice from hackers – he knows certain organisations occasionally go "fishing” for new recruits like this. But to him the signs point to a recruitment drive by a hacker group like Anonymous.

"I can’t help but notice,” he says, "that the locations in question are all places with some of the most talented hackers and IT security researchers in the world.” Either way, their identity would prove irrelevant. When the QR codes left on the lamp posts were decoded, a hidden message pointed the solvers towards a TOR address. TOR, short for The Onion Router, is an obscure routing network that allows anonymous access to the "darknet” – the vast, murky portion of the internet that cannot be indexed by standard search engines. Estimated to be 5,000 times larger that the "surface" web, it’s in these recesses where you’ll find human-trafficking rings, black market drug markets and terrorist networks. And it’s here where the Cicada path ended.

After a designated number of solvers visited the address, the website shut down with a terse message: "We want the best, not the followers." The chosen few received personal emails – detailing what, none have said, although one solver heard they were now being asked to solve puzzles in private. Eriksson, however, was not among them. "It was my biggest anticlimax – when I was too late to register my email at the TOR hidden service," he says. "If my sleep-wake cycle had been different, I believe I would have been among the first." Regardless, a few weeks later, a new message from Cicada was posted on Reddit. It read: "Hello. We have now found the individuals we sought. Thus our month-long journey ends. For now." All too abruptly for thousands of intrigued solvers, it had gone quiet.

Except no. On January 4 this year, something new. A fresh image, with a new message in the same white text: "Hello again. Our search for intelligent individuals now continues." Analysis of the image would reveal another poem – this time from the book Liber Al Vel Legis, a religious doctrine by the English occultist and magician Aleister Crowley. From there, the solvers downloaded a 130Mb file containing thousands of prime numbers. And also an MP3 file: a song called The Instar Emergence by the artist 3301, which begins with the sound of – guess what – cicadas.

Analysis of that has since led to a Twitter account pumping out random numbers, which in turn produced a "gematria": an ancient Hebrew code table, but this time based on Anglo-Saxon runes. This pointed the solvers back into the darknet, where they found seven new physical locations, from Dallas to Moscow to Okinawa, and more clues. But that’s where, once again, the trail has gone cold. Another select group of "first solvers" have been accepted into a new "private" puzzle – this time, say reports, a kind of Myers-Briggs multiple-choice personality test.

But still, we are no closer to knowing the source, or fundamental purpose, of Cicada 3301. "That’s the beauty of it though," says Eriksson. "It is impossible to know for sure until you have solved it all." That is why for him, and thousands of other hooked enthusiasts, January 4 2014 is so important: that’s when the next set of riddles is due to begin again. "Maybe all will be revealed then," he grins. "But somehow, I doubt it."

It really is fascinating. I think they are right to be cautious though, when you consider the qualities the winners will have you'd have to question the motives for wanting to recruit such people. Some poor hackers may end up breaking national security codes for the KGB in return for hookers and cocaine again.... ah takes me back to my youth....  😛

That is one of the most fascinating pieces I've read in ages. The idea that I share this planet with these funny people (ones who I probably just walk past every day) built with super brains for cracking codes amazes me. What an interesting subculture, I'm now exited for Jan 4th 😀 Wonder what happened to the winners....I imagine they were probably beamed back to their home planet inhabited by cicadas... 😉

This is all very intriguing.  But, what can it mean? The matter reminds me a little of the Thurn und Taxis muted post horn & W.A.S.T.E. (We Await Silent Tristero’s Empire - in Thomas Pynchon’s seminal The Crying of Lot 49).  It certainly is a cryptic “enigma”, although I suspect that the end result will turn out to be mundane rather than truly fascinating, although there is about a one in a thousand chance something really weird may be going on  - whether it be some mysterious organization’s apparent to desire to publicise & promote the meaning of Thelema is another matter!

Perhaps all of the successful recruits are being whisked away to Mars or the Moon, à la Alternative Three?

I for one welcome our new cicadian/ hymenopteran overlords and masters.  (You are all well come.)

True, these strange frequencies & “noises” are also an inexplicable phenomenon.  I recall several similar occurrences having been featured in Fortean Times relatively recently too.

There is quite a good joke about the darknet but I can’t exactly remember the punchline offhand (although maybe you can detect a measure of déjà-vu)?!

Do you think the trail has now switched to needing to dig down in Tasmania in order to get more clues (cryptically speaking)?

Another article, this time in the Guardian. Develops the Liber Al vel Legis link.

Challengers had a month to complete that one. The next came in January 2013 . “Hello again. Our search for intelligent individuals now continues.”

The image led to another which contained some verse.

A book whose study is forbidden

    Once dictated to a beast;

To be read once and then destroyed

OR you shall have no peace.

The verse is from an Aleister Crowley book Liber AL vel Legis. Crowley was an occultist who founded his own religion, Thelema. He saw himself as a prophet who had to warn other humans we were entering the Aeon of Horus. He was often rumoured to have been recruited by British intelligence while at Cambridge University. To all events he was a highly controversial figure, once described as “the wickedest man in the world.” This association led many to sense a link to the occult via Cicada.

From a clue in the first line of the Crowley book, questers were able to unscramble the letters at the beginning of the poem and generate the address of a website.  This in turn led onto another 1300mb image. This file then split to show a boot up running sequences of prime numbers up to the value of 3301.

Pretty crappy verse!  These Nietzschean supermen, or insect overlords, or what/whomever they are, plainly can’t write poetry for tuppence.

Plus, where does it say anything about the reader of The Book of the Law who doesn’t destroy it after first reading “having no peace”? – monster intellects though these puzzle setters may have, they clearly haven’t done their homework first in terms of accurate research.

“A riddle which gets people going
And a Masquerade that then awaits an unveiling
Is the proof of a pudding unshowing
That is bound to end in much wailing.”

Well, an old Crowley trick, by using capital letters has the following "A OTO" or "AO TOR". Could be a reference to the OTO or the TOR Network????

TOR
https://www.torproject.org/

A book whose study is forbidden

    Once dictated to a beast;

To be read once and then destroyed

The above references the Book of the Law

OR you shall have no peace.

Refers to the seeker, not Liber Al.

Yes, quite so, that possibility had crossed my mind, Paul – that the reference may have been to the “seeker” – but I dismissed it as not making sufficient sense relating to why apparently only those who would have destroyed Liber AL after first reading it in the first place “shall have peace”.

It further casts the implication that (at least) the 93% of the world’s population who had never come across Liber AL would therefore never have the opportunity of being able to destroy it afterwards, and therefore be deprived also of their chance of finding peace unutterable, rest and ecstasy.

Using your terms of reference, the acrostic might possibly be an anagram for “O TARO” or “O ROTA” (as in “Oh, Wheel of Fate”) as well.  Generally speaking, though, the rule appears to be that the more contrived the explanation, the more unlikely the solution is to be that and it should contain the essence of concealed but obvious simplicity above all else.

Any enquiry made re what was meant by Alternative Three

"jamie barter" wrote:

can be found fairly easily by consulting the mighty Google and/or its trusty minister Wiki-I-Pedia, but for the benefit of any other reader who might possibly be unfamiliar with the term, I was referring to the eponymous book by Leslie Watkins relating to the tv “hoax”:

It was claimed that scientists had determined that the Earth's surface would be unable to support life for much longer, due to pollution leading to catastrophic climate change. Physicist "Dr Carl Gerstein" claimed to have proposed in 1957 that there were three alternatives to this problem. The first alternative was the drastic reduction of the human population on Earth. The second alternative was the construction of vast underground shelters to house government officials and a cross section of the population until the climate had stabilised, a solution reminiscent of the finale of Dr Strangelove. The third alternative, the so-called "Alternative 3," was to populate Mars via a way station on the Moon. […]Purporting to be an investigation into the UK's contemporary "brain drain", Alternative 3 uncovered a plan to make the Moon and Mars habitable in the event of climate change and a terminal environmental catastrophe on Earth. […]The episode began by [Etc]

The book went into considerable more detail covering a lot of ground not dealt with in the programme relating, among other things, to the mysterious disappearance of talented individuals from all fields in what was described as

[…] the so-called "brain drain": a number of mysterious disappearances and deaths of physicists, engineers, astronomers, and others in related fields. Among the strange deaths reported was that of one "Professor Ballantine" of Jodrell Bank. Before his death, Ballantine delivers a videotape to an academic friend, but when viewed on an ordinary videotape machine the only result is radio static. [Etc]

This does not necessarily mean that I personally subscribe to such a belief of course – I just mention it as all forming grist to the mill of the GW (which after all does grind exceeding small.)  Although fairly freely available at the time, the book is now, or at least was the last I heard, quite hard to come by – I have even come across quite serious suggestions that it was ‘suppressed’ from circulation by the old familiar “vested interests”.  Believe it or not…

The “poem” mentioned

is not from The Book of the Law itself – one’s first thoughts would be that it was from ‘The Spell called the Song’ in Chapter One or the rest of it over vv. 37-38 in Chapter Three – but it apparently refers to the [Tunis] Comment by Ank-af-na-khonsu at the end (or should it be at the beginning?) of it instead.

Going back to the matter of the [Tunis] Comment – and stop me if you’ve heard this before, although I don’t think you have in this particular shape – the fact is, A.C., as emancipator of humanity’s mind en masse, never intended people to become slaves of this Comment.  For the reader, being able to peruse a Forum such as this with dedicated boards for each Holy Book would be like listening to good (or otherwise!) sense; something which s/he could then find useful for their own progress and development even though nobody would be under any obligation to take any of it on board themselves.  Not only that, no one would have to read it, or far less take part.  And those that do notwithstanding the above would all implicitly have agreed (one would think) with the recommendation that

All questions of the Law are to be decided only by appeal to my writings, each for himself.

Ergo, there will be no “definitive” commentary apart from A.C.’s, and even that will itself come under that part in the Comment that actually states “There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt” (which is the only section of it to be highlighted, apart from “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” and “Love is the law, love under will.”)
But it’s no doubt true that readers could learn from the experience by (for example) thinking along fresh lines which they mightn’t have done previously (“outside the box” or “blue sky reasoning”, as the corporate jargon has it), or by having supplied to them new facts of possibly synchronistic relevance to their position-in-life at that moment.

"jamie barter" wrote:

That "poem" above was what I did it over the space of 2½ minutes ‘on the spot’, as the original had started to irritate me with its apparent suggestiveness – nay, seeming omniscience.  Similarly the word ‘Masquerade’ was an intentional pun/ double entendre based upon the “treasure hunt” after a golden hare set in motion by its compiler, Kit Williams, which gained some notoriety in the pre-Internet days of the early Eighties.  It involved pre-GSP archaic technology relating to ‘map references’, ‘ordnance surveys’ and people travelling forth on field trips without apps or even (gasp!) a mobile phone.

I've since done a further modification or alternate vers(ion) for your hopeful amusement –

Puzzles that get solvers beaten
And cryptograms pending revealing
Remain proofs of puddings uneaten
Which are bound to end up in all grieving.

OK.... Another update to the Cicada 3301 mystery.....

Cicada 3301 update: the baffling internet mystery is back
A third instalment of the infamous internet puzzle appeared over the weekend, this time featuring William Blake, Masonic stars and a promise of ‘enlightenment’

Again, solvers were faced with another formidably eclectic range of subjects – from ancient Hebrew code tables to Anglo-Saxon runes to Victoria occultist Aleister Crowley. Within a few weeks the puzzles stopped, with only a select few allowed through to a hallowed “inner sanctum” of Cicada.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/internet/10555088/Cicada-3301-update-the-baffling-internet-mystery-is-back.html

But the images are arranged in such a way that some solvers are now debating whether the image is supposed to represent a Thelema star (a hexagram developed by Aleister Crowley) or an image of a Masonic Square.

The Cicada saga has evolved, I thought it would be timely to update this thread with a quick summary to date.

The "assumption" was always this must be some hacker group or some government NSA type agency recruiting "top minds", yet all the known participants all claim it all led to absolutely nowhere ultimately, no job offer, no agency, no "inner circle", no nothing.

https://youtu.be/I2O7blSSzpI

Yet the entire work appeared coded inside of a very "Thelemic" sounding philosophy.

What's more, the 2013 (Phase 2) of the operation had the whole of internet sleuths piling through Liber al Vel Legis, Phase 3 introduced its own "mysterious" text, "Liber Primus".

https://uncovering-cicada.fandom.com/wiki/What_Happened_Liber_Primus_(Post_2014)

Liber Primus, written in "rune" text, has still not yet been fully solved, however some but not all pages of the text have been.

The verses that have been decoded reveal a very "familiar" voice if one if familiar with Liber al Vel Legis and Crowley's usage of theater and puzzle.

For example:

A WARNING

BELIEVE NOTHING FROM THIS BOOK
EXCEPT WHAT YOU KNOW TO BE TRUE
TEST THE KNOWLEDGE
FIND YOUR TRUTH
EXPERIENCE YOUR DEATH
DO NOT EDIT OR CHANGE THIS BOOK
OR THE MESSAGE CONTAINED WITHIN
EITHER THE WORDS OR THEIR NUMBERS
FOR ALL IS SACRED

WISDOM

YOU ARE A BEING UNTO YOURSELF

YOU ARE A LAW UNTO YOURSELF

EACH INTELLIGENCE IS HOLY

FOR ALL THAT LIVES IS HOLY

AN INSTRUCTION COMMAND YOUR OWN SELF

'INSTAR' seeking it circumference is a theme within Liber Primus, which at least on the philosophical side, appears to be a "re-versing" or rephrasing of the message in Liber al Vel Legis.

Was this the real "point" of Cicada 3301?

Is Cicada 3301 a "Rosicrucian Manifesto" of the 21st Century? A "fake" secret society designed to inspire or create new ones, using the historical word of "Liber AL vel Legis" and building off of it?

If so, did it succeed?

Did this success have unintended consequences?

For me personally, this mystery was solved this year, and deepen, watching the very illuminating HBO documentary "Q; Into the Storm" by Cullen Hoback, traced a bizarre connection to QAnon.

  • Since 2013, someone has come forward claiming participation with Cicada 3301, Thomas Schoenberger, declares Cicada 3301 to be about discovering internal revelation, taking users on a journey of discovery where the entire point is the journey, not the discovery (which doesn't exist)
  • Is he a member of Cicada like he claims?
  • Others claiming to be involved with Cicada 3301 claim Thomas Shoenberger has a history of "taking over" movements and manipulating psychologies.
  • Thomas Schoenberger aka Thomas St Germain, claims he is apart of an "I AM" cult.
  • All of these information channels are potentially corrupted, it is hard to tell what is true or not true.

QAnon is either an intentional or unintentional result of Cicada 3301, which is itself a result of Crowley's own puzzles and cryptic teachings.

https://news.slashdot.org/story/20/10/18/204227/is-qanon-an-8chan-game-gone-wrong

Completely unsolved questions, is Thomas Schoenberger a modern Crowley, planting his own myths and cryptic teachings, or is he a dark mastermind, practicing deception and misreading the ruins?

https://twitter.com/AnOpenSecret/status/1132938798877290496

QAnon is probably one of the darkest and disturbing psychological mass hysterias of all time, if that was intentional on his part, I truly look forward to his reckoning.

If it was unintentional on the part of Cicada 3301, its a big warning and red flag, and a big statement to how essential understanding "magick" and psychology is now, more than ever.

"meme magick" is a very real phenomenon, in my opinion.

Do magicians really know what they are doing?

@duck

Now duck and chuck rhyme, but the real significance is that the HGA of a Duck has gone silent for a while...

Blessings and peace!

Of course a duck is a duck when it could be a drake, but never a decoy or a drone, but I must say HGA of Duck's comments were always appreciated and demonstrated a higher intelligence such that in those effervescent mysteries of the Book of the Law explored and shared (though surviving brute force attacks) might well conceive that the mystery of the crickets, the locust flume of plague here in Plato's cave that the Cicada 3301 was obviously seeking to awaken the living from could have been initiated by our feathered friend...quack quack...it that a real duck call or a robo call...

As for Q, remember one's P's and don't get so hung up on one's poop, for remember "the needle and the damage done" demands the latest upgrade of Baal Gates magnetic prion syrups making man into iron man drones and decoys for the mass culling that Trump signed off on for the military operation... but Russiagate was a Schiffty lie doubled down from Porton Downs  and maybe Crosseyed Mary will eviscerate the leering pedo GI Joe Biden who is controlled by YMCA's BoJo the psychotic clown of the Crown that seeks to cause a Gulf of Tonkin in the Black Sea...yes Virginia the HMS Defender was trespassing and a warning shot was fired...anyways I am sure Dylan's Murder Most Foul has plenty of clues as does this issue with those who pose as christians and deal in slaves, white black rainbow decoys...tangled up in...

the website does have dives into Cicada 3301

No I had never heard of Thomas Schoenberger till Sanguine Chuck's post, thanks, and I find the few musical presentations compositions i have heard as refreshing...

Now back to reading the Star in the West!

I am truly sorry for opening up that rabbit hole lol, as you suggest– back to the Star in the West!

Which is just the literature of the seed syllable of the Aeon of Viral Marketing, whose template master being Aleister Crowley. We find again, the seed beget a tree, which itself has more seeds, which then become more trees, with more seeds.

And even in 2021 we find the seed in every tree that it has planted and grown for the past 117 years.

Why do you consider mention of Thomas Schoenberger to be opening up of a 'rabbit hole'? Do you need the 'Holy Handgrenade'?

That is my honest reaction to the discovery of this level of the rabbit hole. Technically Thomas would be a rabbit hole inside of a rabbit hole inside of a rabbit hole...or a big time sink.

The whole Cicada to Qanon story is so strange and it is still unwinding in real time, but in a few years, I believe there will be books and documentaries made about all of this.

My curiosity is purely psychological.

And I choose to interpret all of this within Leary and Wilson's Neurologic.

The wars that emerge between caste 17 - caste 19, all information and digital wars, sort of playing out before our very eyes.

Tying the biggest psy-op in history, QAnon, and it's influence on history, to a trail that began with Liber al Vel Legis in 1904 really makes me crave that Aeon of Maat more than ever lol

When Robert Anton Wilson was asked, as was often the case, who the real conspirators running the world were, ( is it the Pope? or the Jews? or the Freemasons?... etc?, Etc?, etc? )  Wilson's  answer  was  to say that it was he and his confidants!

This is an important answer to think about as it is ultimately an empowering position to take, particularly when one understands the perspective Wilson was teaching...Thus I have no problem with the Leary/Wilson lens as a useful lattice to which the discipline of General Semantics can be helpful, perhaps....

Now I do not know the reference to what "caste 17-caste 19" is and am reluctant to search, but would like an answer or directional clue...

Now as regards this Schoenberger character...the link you pointed me to is the type of thing that can get one's head to spin, to which the issue of Issac Kappy is quite disturbing...

As to Q-Anon being the biggest pay-op of history is rather silly...Covid-19 is...but remember the intelligence networks have been running spectacles for millennium...

Craving an "Aeon of Maat" is like craving Q-Anon or the some historic return of Jesus...wish fulfillment fantasies perhaps engineered by the very elites seeking to murder and enslave humanity...by dropping breadcrumbs that then serve as a set up for populations attracted to such desires for liberation...to then be rounded up as the FBI 1/6 sting was that Drump was captured clown leading to the sting just like the Defund the Police scam is leading to a national Stasi Gestapo under total Deep State control.

Back to this Society, I have not read the Cicada 3301 references to The Book of the Law yet, only that first page reference ducks and decoys.

No, I don't think it is. I have had a growing interest in the "Aeon of Maat" since the early 1990s and I cannot recall ever "craving" it. Why is it considered necessary to talk in such extravagant, hyperbolic terms?

Perhaps because the "Cravings for the Aeon of Ma'at" are

Posted by: @hadgigegenraum

wish fulfillment fantasies perhaps engineered by the very elites seeking to murder and enslave humanity

(which terrible scenario may call for no uncertain terms in its exposure).

However, I think hadgigegenraum may be confusing the Aeon of Truth and Justice with the demands for the same in our turbulent culture where mass hysteria is often provoked and directed by mass media.

I would suggest that the Aeon of Ma'at, as a State of Consciousness, is entered into by the mind which has overcome the momentum of media group think and the influence of the prevalent (and political) stimuli bombardment. In this sense, the Ma'atian Mystic is a type of elite-but may also be as the AL-ien King choosing garments at Will. For the Aeon of Ma'at is known outside of temporal power (and societal status) as an Initiatory State.

Of course, this suggests the same of the Aeon of Horus. It suggests the same of all the so-called "Aeons" as elements of Mind which may be "built into" the Mandala of our Being.

And there is no "craving" in the Great Balance.

Mr. Staley,

The reference was made in the context of Sanguine Chuck's statement and thus there is no reason for you to get defensive about your own personal interests, to which thus perhaps your characterization of my comments as "extravagant" and "hyperbolic" might actually be a proper stimulus by which you can reflect upon the asymptote of your own practice relative to a Maatian "Men Ab" or essential composure over one's emotions... love under will.

Thus I thank you for weighing in so to speak. At this point, our good natured Charlie here has come to a point of familiarity with some of my plays, the lila of these posts, where a certain crisis in the relative historical situation does certainly beg deeper contexts to which invocations of truth and justice are relevant as Achad discovered in a fuller appreciation of the Revelations of 1904, to which at this stage in the game, the development of such faculties of moral truth is the initiatory opportunity, be it Liber L or perhaps even in a  picture of a duck and a comment about decoys and getting a message out...which thus are a connected by a red thread that seeks to open up certain faculties, that must be worked for to which it is interesting the our Sanguine friend is interested in a group grokking of sorts relative to explorations of Liber Legis.

Perhaps the problem is when some answer, such a Sunyatta or Maat is postulated, which while correct relatively and or absolutely, the development of certain hundredth monkey learnings resplendent of an evolution is to be expressed as the inner notion of Maat might be exteriorized, still finds the ordeals, be they in some mass initiation terror, makes such challenges to access deeper faculties and resplendent upon those initiates who might dare, to start with the Truth as Grant so found it relevant to Quote Frater O.P.V (Norman Mudd) at the end of chapter 6 of the Cults of the Shadow, the Cult of the Beast (Aleister Crowley), where O.P.V. states..."All initiation must begin with an act of Truth" where the context concerned encounters with the Beast 666 at Cefalu, the Abbe of Thelema, to which encounters with the Beast 666 brought forth a break from safety, which thus implies a finding of a true safety within, to which the Daughter, the final He, can be realized that the weighing of the Heart is at hand as Achad and Anahadna and others have suggested, at and end or beginning, to which I would include Steiner's thesis and doctoral dissertation, The Philosophy of Freedom, as an indication towards development as the Maatian faculty as that of  moral intuition and inspiration...and thus these times are ripe for such courage and grace

Do what thou wilt

HG

Wilson's  answer  was  to say that it was he and his confidants!

I'm very familiar with this wisdom but remember, Bob's response went it all directions.

Bob's answer is that each of us can do this too, I can declare myself the Ipissimus of the Illuminati and view the world as a my own conspiracy to wake the place up along with some good friends. And each of my friends can do the same thing.

Nudge Nudge, I've been trying that here lol.

😆

Now I do not know the reference to what "caste 17-caste 19" is and am reluctant to search, but would like an answer or directional clue...

I'm one of those very very geeky people that will wait 17 years to get asked a question like this 🙂

So I'm going to interpret this full "Leary".

  • According to the view of Neurologic, all of history as well as our individual development is designed by intelligence that follows a pattern that can be predicted in most if not all human psychological systems, including religion, but with a focus on the future (SMILE)
  • These patterns are 8 x 3 (24) phases of intelligence in the individual, as well as all of life, as well as history as it plays out as the evolution of human intelligence, the future designers of whole world systems.
  • Basically 24 unique types of intelligences that are apart of one holistic system of intelligence, which designed it, and this is tracked as biological evolution, but with a teleological purpose, designed by intelligence in the future, us. A paradox that he worked out with Jack Sarfatti and those crazy hippy physicists (another fun rabbit hole!).
  • Human Beings and Human like intelligence are the creative components and organizing principles of the universe itself.
  • According to this model, we are at "Phase 19" of the pattern playing out of 24 possible modes in history, so pretty deep in!
Screen Shot 2021 07 03 at 9.06.56 PM

According to Leary, this type of hyper selfish consumerism is our collective "peak" intelligence that all all terrestrial global territorial struggles between lower phases.

I would call this "peak obnoxiousness". I've had the benefit of contemplating Neurologic since the 80's, and even after putting it away multiple times, history always proves Leary's eerie prophetic SMILE to be playing out, even predicting Elon Musk and Bezos, and I believe, a character like Trump being able to take power the way he did.

Screen Shot 2021 07 03 at 9.21.33 PM

Translation, when masculine intelligence, historically juvenile and stuck at circuit four, advances itself through lots of great sex, drugs, getting high, indulgence after indulgence, that type of intelligence learns how to control and manipulate the digital signal to create multiple realities. Trump is kind of like that sort of freak, but as obnoxious as Trump is, it actually marks a big shift for humanity, because it means the seeds of Stage 20 are now being planted.

Stage 20, "Egg Wisdom", has a very "Maatian" vibe to it

Screen Shot 2021 07 03 at 9.31.00 PM

Tim Leary's "Game of Life" is really the full "adepts" handbook, if one truly wants to experiment along that path of Neurologic (and I did, oh I really really did) but it is not an easy read, it is very chaotic, alive, intuitive, and seems more like a work in progress. But this is what Leary claimed to have received from "Higher Intelligence", and this was also worked out with RAW, both of whom were practicing true sex magick (sex tantra to receive higher "signals", i.e. brilliant ideas) on LSD with their wives and girlfriends.

yeah very disturbing, all of that, and all the psychologies out there the past 10 years learning really advanced psychology and magick on internet discussion forums, often without realizing it...that's what I meant, that rabbit hole.

Posted by: @hadgigegenraum

As to Q-Anon being the biggest pay-op of history is rather silly...Covid-19 is...but remember the intelligence networks have been running spectacles for millennium...

Spectacle operations can now be run by my crazy uncle and your nutty aunt, intelligence networks no longer necessary, Facebook is far more daunting, Google has far more nefarious reach, and Karen has your email address.

That's why I believe QAnon is the most disturbing, because it has no true designer, just one big dark mind forming itself into smaller and smaller dark minds, and its sole purpose is deception and delusion, serving no purpose.

Levels upon levels of manipulation.

I believe that At a certain point, the psychological game changes, higher intelligence operates along "win win" and that sort of Game Theory wins in the end, mathematically speaking.

That is what I believe, I believe the ultimate conspiracy is the one being manipulated by intelligences smarter than us, and those intelligences only plot in win-win (Circuit 20 and above)

I believe what RAW believes about the Illuminati and all conspiracies.

I prefer to focus my belief on the conspiracy I am designing, as well as the Shambhala conspiracy of the Himalayans and the conspiracy of the Amitābha Buddha.

Still not sure about those Thelemites, you think we can trust them?  😆

I hope I don't come off as a wait for the prophecy to come true sort of fella.

I am talking about designing, building, and engineering Maat, now 😀

I have 100% confidence in this direction 🙂

However, I think hadgigegenraum may be confusing the Aeon of Truth and Justice with the demands for the same in our turbulent culture where mass hysteria is often provoked and directed by mass media.

Specifically "mass media" as a form of global intelligence that is at the stage of Phase 17, 18, and 19.

Leary referred to this as "lower circuits" co-opting butterfly language for "caterpillar" purposes.

Mass media (which I include all possible digital and electronic signals) as the potential for something beyond our current conception, and we have enough of this technology to completely reboot civilization to our "butterfly" phase as Leary called it, but what he also predicted (accurately, I believe) was that lower circuit intelligence try to exploit "extra terrestrial technology"  for terrestrial and territorial purpose.

Ultimately, it wont work because the whole system of human intelligence is designed to transcend, we are designed to be a success in the universe, and we are the ones designing that, a cool sci-fi tantra I think quite apropos to our modern era.

Bucky Fuller added a twist. He said that it would be a "neck and neck" race, even though we are designed to be a success, the road getting there will be fraught with uncertainty and extinction, and it will be something we will really have to fight for and create, so we should not take the outcome for granted, it wont just magically happen, we have to create it by any means necessary, including magick.

Posted by: @hadgigegenraum

as an indication towards development as the Maatian faculty as that of  moral intuition and inspiration...and thus these times are ripe for such courage and grace

For my own sanity, I leap 100% into what ever architectures exist for the golden age, new age, aquarian age, Maatian age, Noosphere, hell even the futuristic transcendent of Ray Kurzweil, I don't care, I believe they are all describing the same thing, relative to each POV.

The "truth" of this time we are in, that is indisputable, is that for the first time in the history of the world and the history of our species, we actually have the resources, intelligence, technology, science, and philosophy to develop a fully functioning whole world system.

That is just a fact.

Sadly, it is also a fact that there exists no "political will" for this reality.

Time to start ramping up viral marketing, i.e. magick, for this next phase 🙂

That is the current Illuminati edict that I have declared as Pope of the Discordian Sect.

Who is in with me? Or, if you've already started this, can I join your group?

🤗 😎

PS: Leary also said that, for the purposes of our "secret society", the best thing we can do to create a "cover" whereas the "dark agencies" (NSA, CIA, FBI, whatever) will leave us alone is to speak in butterfly language, broadcast everything and have no secrets.

We WANT them tapping our cell phones, easier way to get the message to them 🙂

Mention "World Peace" often, 99% of all lower circuits confuse this as weird hippy logic, and thus their own false ideas create a cover for our operations, the more truthfully we speak to complete and utter world peace, the crazier we will appear, and the less of a threat, to our opponents who don't see the bigger game.

The most shocking concept to bring into any serious critical conversation is world peace. Try it as an experiment. Notice the reactions, notice the shunning and shaming, notice the global shadow at work!
