Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: restoring the magic to England
Only a few charismatic oddballs such as Aleister Crowley, who founded his own magical order based on the sacrament of sex and named one of his daughters Nuit Ma Ahathoor Hecate Sappho Jezebel Lilith, took it at all seriously. For everyone else, believing in magic was a stage that civilisation went through before superstition was replaced by science. The modern Prospero did not wear a “magic garment” but a lab coat.
