A good summary, FraterProRata, in my opinion.

I saw the film and read some posts here...

If a student begins studying materials left by Crowley, the only reason that he may continue would be that they worth reading; not because of Crowley's character.

So I believe making a film about Crowley's personality is not a big contribution at all... It is like Googling Bjork's nude images instead of listening to her music!

I have this and enjoy it as what it is - a romp.

To take up Sepand's point that Crowley's character is not important to his work I have to disagree, the work of anyone comes to us through the filter of their personality, cultural context, etc. and awareness of the nature of these will give us tools towards a deeper undrstanding. It may not be essential but it's certainly not unimportant if you wish a wider view. How would your reading of Marx change if you found that he had servants?

That said this film, fun as it is, is probably not a great guide to the actual character of AC - more a pantomime extension of it.

I concur. The film, in and of itself, is a farce; a farce that is, very occasionally, rather amusing, yet ultimately ridiculous. The direction and cinematography is amateurish, and alas I must disagree with those throwing compliments in the direction of Simon Callow as I found his rancorous overacting somewhat repugnant. All that being said, John Shrapnel was excellent as an ailing, embittered Crowley: his performance being the film's one and only saving grace, in my humble opinion.

Or perhaps you could just, maybe, buy the DVD?

This has probably come up elsewhere. If so, I apologize.

My wife was browsing Netflix Instant Queue last night and saw this: Crowley.

Yes, it's a movie about Crowley. Yes, it contains tons of misinformation. If you watch it with the idea of a "spoof" in mind, it's kind of decent, but it's supposed to be a horror movie, not a comedy. Anyway, just figured I'd toss it out here.

Yeah I think it's been discussed on here previously. I do beleive it was released under a different title in Europe. From what I recall it was produced and directed by the dude from Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson. I liked it alot, it was cute.

Yes, it's featured on this site in at least ten News items and dozens of Forum posts, mostly under its original title of 'Chemical Wedding'. I reviewed it here: http://www.lashtal.com/nuke/Reviews-req-showcontent-id-57.phtml Judging by the comments there, I enjoyed more than many other members here!

I have linked this new thread with the main previous one.

saw the Netflix version several months back...

IF they swapped any semblance of Crowley out of the film with some generic "evil" villain, this film would not get half the attention it did! It wasn't terrible per se, just not that great. Worth seeing if you like that sort of film, or are just curious about how they present Crowley, etc. But keep your expectations grounded in reality!

Also, when I did see this film, I thought about WHO would have produced a more interesting film, and I came up with Ken Russell in his GOTHIC-era mode. Interestingly, he just passed away!
