93!

I thought to go ahead and start some fundraising for my favourite website lashtal.com (in fact it's the only website I regularly visit beside the sites connected to my work). Hopefully this will inspire others to do something similar before the situation gets even more serious.

The Aleister Crowley Dependant Collective (AC/DC) is my own private publishing "company", usually just distributing stuff I like among friends. Presented here is a complete facsimile edition of all 28 issues of "Hain der Isis", the "magazine for magick as a cultural problem and a philosophy of life", edited by Henri Birven and issued between 1927 and 1931. All 28 issues were handbound by myself, they make up well over 900 pages and they were never republished anywhere. This is the only set I have and if you don't have the time and money to visit nine different university libraries throughout Germany to find and copy them on your own (and beware: in most of the issues hold by them the Crowley articles are missing) there is little chance you will ever get a hand on them. The magazine is written in German and contains among other interesting stuff the probably first publishing of Crowley's magnum opus "Magick in Theory and Practice" translated by Martha Küntzel - probably because according to the excellent "The Books of the Beast" by Timothy D'Arch Smith it seems that the 4 part wrappers edition as well as the Subscriber's edition of "Magick" were not delivered until 1930, contrary to their title page dates. Crowley's contributions also include selections from "The Confessions" and "The Psychology of Hashish". There are also some reviews of Crowley's books, as well as reviews of books by P.B. Randolph, Eliphas Levi, Franz Spunda and William Seabrook for example.

The most interesting installation surely is Birven's own unpublished "biography" of Crowley, serialized for over a year and highly interesting because it shows Birven's huge enthusiasm for Crowley slowly descending into a total falling out with the Master Therion.

Of course there are a lot of other articles in "Hain der Isis", ranging from Birven's own study of the Abbé Vachère (most importantly some updates that are not to be found in his book on Vachère) to writings on the Qabalah, the Yi King, Voodoo, Spiritualism, Rosycrucianism and so on.

This is a one-time opportunity.

More on "Hain der Isis" and Henri Birven can be found here (and maybe also in the new book on Gerald Yorke, whom he called a good friend and which unfortunately is still hold in customs from me):

Please PM with serious and ridiculously overgenerous offers until midnight July 23rd (CET), all the money is for Lashtal.com! If I deem the offers unsufficient I might decline them and put the thing on ebay.

If you have any more questions concerning the contents or whatever please don't hesitate to ask.

More interesting stuff to follow.

(((Lutz)))

How kind of you!
I'm afraid I cannot make a bid but, as a Lashtalian, I want to thank you for your offer.
I wish wholeheartedly that your move will be successful.

Regards
Hecate

93, William.

No, after 14 installations comprising 93 pages the series ends with Chapter IX, and his "biography" of Crowley also ends. I guess Birven had enough of Crowley and all the aftermaths of the Weida Conference, but it did not stop him to call him and AC best friends again in his obituary for Germer in 1963.

Thanks for asking.

Hi Lutz,

what was the result of the fundraising action - successful, or will you auction them off on ebay? Also, could you tell me which issues contain the MiTaP translation , #1 - #14 , or did it skip around?

cheers,
William

William, 93!

Oh, yes, we have a generous winner - but I totally forgot about the deadline. I have never had as much work stress as during the last three weeks, although my behavious is unexcusable. I will contact the winner now providing Paul's paypal address and will sew the last three issues on Sunday and then they will be send out on Tuesday - I am not here on Monday.

Sorry about that! Thanks for the reminder.

I will check the contents again and answer your question on the weekend.
