93, all!

Please allow me this outbreak of shameless self-promotion:

Between 1972 and 1977 seven issues of the wonderful A5 magazine Agapé - The Occult Review were published, Nos.2 to 8, a number 1 never appeared. The editors are the publishers of the Crowley Cross Index from 1976, then (and even today still) a milestone of Aleister Crowley Bibliography. The main editor also is highly valued member of this site and in my own view a repeated candidate for Lashtal Member of the Month (if this title would be awarded) because of his continuous and unexceptionally witty, wise, humourous and well-researched contributions here, all of which qualities will be found in Agapé - The Occult Review. Since these magazines are stapled booklets and pretty frail when used quite often (which I do and did) I made a faithful facsimile of all issues and had them bound in a wonderful looking 384-page paperback as a reference copy. Each page is clearly legible, even issue number 7, which was set in A4 and reduced to the A5 format of the magazine. The covers and backcovers of the issues are also reproduced, but in black and white only. A loosely inserted flyer for Spare's A Book of Automatic Drawings is also reproduced. This copy I am selling now. Why? Because in the meantime I have a wonderful hardback copy of the book! It is an absolutely unique item which can't be found anywhere else. Single issues sell on abebooks for up to 60 Euros, and I am selling this book for 77 Euros, including shipment to everywhere in the world.

Highlights of the book:

The first republication of Spare's The Anathema of ZOS with an introduction by Kenneth Grant

Original and quite substantial contributions by Amado 777 (Crowley's "son") and quite substantial reader's letters on that matter

The first deciphering and printing of The Golden Dawn Cipher Manuscripts (in fact there was an isochronous printing due to one colleague who was a "double agent" for another Thelemic magazine of that period). A few of the facsimiled manuscripts (which were printed in several issues) have been replaced by myself with versions that are better legible than the originals)

A lengthy Regardie article discussing various recent publications on the Golden Dawn

A highly interesting comment on the 1st chapter of Liber AL by Frater Quod Perditit Optat, an A.'.A.'. and Nu Isis Lodge member

A long article by Lemuel Johnstone 'Spare Parts' which is a critique of AOS's 'Book of Pleasure.'

Great book reviews of Crowley, Grant, Spare and other books that were published in these years

Articles on the Quabalah, Liber AL riddle solutions, enochian chess and much more

As mentioned I am selling this unique piece for 77 Euros including worldwide shipping. The book is in very good condition, used as a reference copy a few times but still very tight in binding with nearly no grubbing or bended edges. If interested please PM me. Below you will find some images.

Thanks a lot

I thought that Agapé was a great magazine. I especially liked the Anathema of Zos issue, but all issues were absorbing.

Agapé, Azoth, Sothis - bit of a golden era, eh?

Best wishes,

Michael.

i never saw this compendium. I’d be really pleased to do so, though, it would bring back most relevantly for me lost pieces of writing published in the magazine [often under various pseudonyms, as were pieces written by Andy himself] … we had some great times together but I was never the editor [and indeed Andy’s co-editor was a real person but who had no involvement beyond their name being on it]

Andy and I created and brought out The Crowley Cross Index together , a joint project because at the time [early to mid 70s] it was very difficult to get in the uk Crowley’s books - and Symonds/Grant were claiming copyright on material that wasn’t theirs to do so, and also saying books were out of print or not extant when modern American editions - which we already owned - did exist.

I am past caring what people get up to but when I see various ‘orders’ claiming copyright to AC material I think go f**k yourselves! You have not got copyright to it at all.

If anyone ever comes across a copy or makes a copy do let me know. Thanks.

Maybe these are ’the 80s’ - whatever that means - after all Covid is 93 … 🙂

@wparfitt 93, Will

If you send me your address to lutz@lutzlemke.de I will gladly send you the last copy over. I loved the magazine and the cross index also. I also miss Okontrair's wit on the pages (Andy's Lashtal name).

Cool to see you here and I am happy to provide. Just use the email adress (PM is not working anymore).
