93!

It's saddening to see what Paul is willing to sell to cover the costs for LAShTAL. So I am trying to raise some funds too. I will try to do this without ebay. Firstly, to save the ebay fee and secondly I am not a big ebay fan at the moment, although this is a silly personal thing. The items for sale in this thread are for LAShTAL members exclusively at this time. If I realize that the selling chances are significantly better through ebay, I will stop the auction at least a few days before ending and put the stuff on ebay.

Here are the "rules":

The auctions will run for about two weeks. Highest bidder before end of the auction will win.

Bids are to be made through PM to me.

I will publish the current highest bids every few days, if anybody wishes to raise his bid.

The highest bid will go exclusively to LAShTAL, I will just keep the shipping fees, which have to be determined, but will be reasonable and probably known to most. If unclear, please PM.

Payment through Paypal preferrably, to save fees it will be best to split the payment into a LAShTAL donation and a shipping payment to my account.

I hope this is all clear and makes sense.

I will start tonight with two or three lots of some weird stuff from my archives, and will add lots over the coming days and weeks.

Thanks for your attention and your expected generosity...

Lutz

And here is lot No. 1:

C.F. RUSSELL - Set of 10 Pamphlets

This is a set of 10 pamphlets of works by C.F. Russell which he published during the fifties of the last century. These are obviously privately created xeroxed editions (just like in the good old days) by Alostrael Publishing in 1999. I don't think Alostrael Publishing is an actual publishing firm though. I received these from an Austrian guy who probably just made a few copies for some friends and for his own fun. I don't know of any real circulation numbers and I am sadly not in contact with this guy anymore. Anyhow, I think they are quite nicely done and they are in the same condition as 13 years ago. They went into an archive folder and they come right out of that now. Though home-made, they are as readable as anyone can wish for, if you find C.F. Russell's work readable at all, that is. They are weird, fascinating, quite rare, one-of-a-kind and a real work of love. The lot consists of: Barbara Cubed, North Well, Blooming Umbrella, Peppermint, Book Of Radicals, Phenix Marrow, Copper Kettle, Rime Store, Millet Valley and Silver Cradle.

Bids please via PM. The auction will last through October 23, 2013 mid-night.

And here is lot No. 2:

A complete set of a facsimile reprint of HAIN DER ISIS from 1930, all 11 numbers that appeared.

Hain der Isis was an occult magazine in German, edited by Henri Birven. What makes this publication special is that it contained quite a lot of Crowley material translated by Martha Kuentzel, especially the serialized translation of Magick in Theory and Practice, probably even a few weeks or months before the English original appeared. Also there is a fascinating account by Birven about his encounters with the Master Therion. Other contributors are Joanny Bricaud, Dr. Franz Spunda, Dr. E.C.H. Peithmann, Birven himself and a lot more.

Bids please via PM. The auction will last through October 23, 2013 mid-night.

And here is Lot No. 3:

A set of 16 Pamphlets serializing DARK DOORWAY OF THE BEAST by Gareth Hewitson-May.

Another obscure Alostrael Publishing stunt from 1998 serializing this fascinating book-essay. There is one pamphlet for each chapter, the forewords, illustrations and appendixes were not done as far as I know. This seems to be a true facsimile reprint (minus the mentioned omissions), again done in a home-made style, but actually again quite beautiful and as clear and as readable as one can wish for. Each chapter of the book became one issue, all in all 16 pamphlets. Very good condition, nearly as I received them. Again I have no idea how much of those really appeared, but I assume just a few that were privately circulated.

Bids please via PM. The auction will last through October 23, 2013 mid-night.

That's very generous of you, Lutz! Mind you, these items are so interesting there's a risk that I might end up bidding on them myself!

Just wanted to let everyone know that the first bids are in and there is still plenty of time to bid yourself. The good news: there WILL be some money generated for LAShTAL! But the prices are still VERY moderate for Russell or Gareth Hewitson-May items. Still 12 more days to go though.

I try to pick out some other obscure and weird stuff over the weekend or early next week so keep checking this thread out.

Hi Lutz,

I was wondering, having read your comment...

Any chance we can know the current highest bids? otherwise we are operating in the dark and it becomes more like a sealed bids auction.

Here is lot No.4:

Another obscure publication, this time a copy from my archives. This is a fascinating magazine that ran from 1983-1985. It is called FORMAOS, and it is "The Spearhead for the New Evolutionary Current". In fact it is a periodical of the Occult Arts dealing with (mainly) Austin Osman Spare, Chaos Magic and other stuff like that, brought to you from the people who published SOTHIS. It is quite rare, since I cannot find anything about it on the web. It's more of 150 pages of excellent essays and occult artwork. The contents (incomplete): A Salutation to Austin Osman Spare; Otherliness: Propositions from the New Romantic by Paul Ryan; The Ancient View of the Tree; The Magician: Illusion and reality by Chris Bray; The Eye of Ecstasy by A. O. Spare; Dream Control by Steven Ashe; The Song of Los; The Pictish princess by J.A. Johnston; Agape by S. J. Waters; Automatic Drawing as Means to Art by A. O. Spare; The Philosophy of Anarchism by H. Read; Path and Pathworkings by A.C. Highfield; Chaos Magick by Ray Sherwin; The Book of the Apple I want to Eat; Sigils by A.O. Spare; The Celtic Pathy by Jenny; The Illuminati by J.H. Depper; Spare Parts by John Sanders; 4 Women Surrealists by D. Grimbleby; The Icon & the Astral Atlas by Paul Ryan; A Rite for the Invocation of Ceredwen; and lots of other stuff, a plenty full of occult Artwork, Book reviews, Readers' letters (by Kenneth Grant and Israel Regardie f.ex.). A really fascinating magazine, and as far as I know, no more of it has been published.

This auction will end on October 31, midnight.

And here is lot No.5, also ending on October 31, midnight.

Another weird Alostrael Publishing "publication" from Austria, again I don't think this has been looked at by more than a few friends. A fascinating Essay (in fact a lecture held in 1990) by Frater Abrasax V° (probably Patrick King) of O.T.O. Tahuti Lodge, New York City. It deals with the Sexo-Magickal Talismanic Tradition of Austin Osman Spare. 16 pages of a text you won't find on the web or anywhere else, as far as I know.

And lot No.6

The exhibition catalogue to Crowley's exhibition of Paintings at the Porza Gallery in Berlin in 1931. German text, 12 pages including some b/w pictures of Crowley's art, and a complete list of his exhibited paintings, very rare, unobtainable elsewhere. A copy from my archives. Auction runs until October 31, midnight.

What wonderful & delightfully obscure items you have here, "simon"!  Iff I had the dosherooney, I would certainly be in mind to get ooh - items 5 and 6: the Spare item & Crowley Berlin art catalogue, for starters!  But all the best with your efforts, and it's all generously for an extremely worthy cause, of course.

Fortunately I have all 5 copies of FORMAOS (Lot #4) on plain white paper (is that rarer I wonder?) – and yes, I agree that was such a “really fascinating” and splendid 'fanzine' and it's a real shame no more issues were ever made forthcoming.  I didn’t know it was particularly scarce though, and would have thought copies of it would be available “somewhere” on the web, as nearly everything seems to be nowadays?

Well, at least I couldn't find anything about it.

You don't need very much since I often forget (because in German there are different words for that) that when I speak of a copy from my archives I mean a photocopy/scan/etc. from a book in my archive. I try to make working copies of most of my stuff, particularly of the more fragile items and sometimes replace these working copies with a nicely bound working copy. The AC catalogue and the FORMAOS collection (so there are 5? Interesting.) are working copies printed and bound/stapled by myself. They don't have real book collector's value (this might change when I am famous one day), but the contents are quite valuable I think.

93, Lutz! – shall I call you Lutz rather than “thereal” or “simon”?  It looks like everyone else does (as it seems to be the trend…)

- Well, there’s some news for you there too!

I may have to do some rummaging around in boxes, but if you want, I can try to email you a scan of Number 5 if you PM me with your details, so you'll have a complete set.

93, all!

Just a reminder that Lot 1-3 will end tomorrow at midnight CET, which is ca. 33 hours away. No new (higher) bids have arrived, so go for it as long as you can!

Lot No. 1 would blend perfectly with my (hopefully soon visible) first Classified Ad. A good portion of the sale price will go to LAShTAL with this also.
