I am a new member mainly because in moving books into a new book case at home I noticed a book I have had for many years and had never  looked at. The book of Thoth    first edition #174.  I was reading "Club Dumas" where the book is mentioned and said to myself hey I have that, would like to know more about it.  Is there a list of who purchased the first 200.  I have no idea where I acquired the book, am assuming it was in a box of books from an estate auction.  I live in central Illinois USA and it seems a strange place for it to turn up.

Published in 1944. Production was financed by initiates in the USA (and elsewhere?), and several copies were sent by sea to the USA. The ship carrying them was sunk by a u-boat, and the "financeers" never got their copies ... yet the books later surfaced in used book stores in the US. Nobody knows what really happened. In 1966, one copy was for sale at Cherokee Bookstore in Holywood (er, Hollywood), Calif. It sat in a safe and the price was $500 - back then. Today, it is very valuable and you will have to decide whether you'll cash in, or maybe read it first, or whatever your heart decides.

Please read the Guidelines here, to which you agreed before registering. If you're selling the book, please state a price. If you're not, then it's in the wrong Forum.

The only time I've seen one in person was in 1986, when Charles Taylor at Ben Abraham Books in Toronto was selling a copy for 4000 dollars (Canadian... about 3000 US dollars then, I suppose).

I got a few first editions from him, including a signed "Chicago May" (number 19), but I could never swing The Book of Thoth.

The book is not for sale at this time as I have just found it and wanted to know more about it.  I did not know which forum to be correct.  I thank all of you for replying to my inquiries, this is interesting stuff. When I do sell it you will all be the first to know.  My son is in Germany till next summer and I promist not to sell till he got to see it.  Thanks  RC Scholz

To be fair, Robert in no way gave the impression that the book was for sale, and was merely curious about it.

That is an amazing find, Robert!  Since you won't be selling it until, at least, next year, would you please upload a pic to the "Bibliographia Thelemica" when the feature is available here again?  Or post a pic of it here in the thread?  It is one of the most beautiful A.C. first editions!
