1) Important New Work

J. Edward Cornelius, Red Flame 12 and 13, In the Name of the Beast, A Biography of Grady Lewis McMurtry, Two paperback books, Red Flame 12, 1918-1962, xvi + 204pp +(5pp) index; Red Flame 13, ii + 226pp + (6pp) index. Authoritative account of Grady's life and magical endeavours with a great deal of information concerning his contacts with Crowley, his relationship with Germer and then the operation of the Caliphate OTO. This lucid and perceptive account gives a wealth of detail which challenges many commonly held notions. Moreover it pays full attention to Grady's A.'.A.'. endeavours, a dimension crucially important to the man himself, but often overlooked by others. The writer knew Grady well, is sympathetic to him and explains why he followed the path he did. Never-the-less he is not blind to Grady's faults. Moreover it is massively informative about the circles in which Grady moved. Highly recommended, Order Ref.RF12-13 £44

2) Ithell Colquhoun and Druidism,
Colquhoun was a major British surrealist artist, a member of the O.T.O. and the Golden Dawn related Order of the Temple and the Phoenix. She wrote Sword of Wisdom a biography of Macgregor Mathers with much information concerning Golden dawn survivals. Her activity in Druid circles in often overlooked.

Ithell Colquhoun, Diary, August 4th 1961 - August 17th 1961, Manuscript 28pp Her record of her visit to a Druidic Gorsedd in Brittany, France. She describes her consecration as Deaconess into the Celtic Church which appears to be a manifestation of Wandering Bishop activity into Druidism which attempted to extablish a congregation amongst the public centered on a chapel titled "The Hermitage". She recounts the rituals, encounters, personality clashes, problems with neighbours and so forth. She refers to their Druidic teachings and records her personal meditations utilising chakras in the Hernitage. Small part very browned by rusting paper clip Also enclosed, her membership card of the Gorsedd which is her membership card for College des Druides, Bardes et Ovates de Bretagne which is hand written and typed and rubber stamped with Druidic seal. Also a coloured photograph of her being initiated at the Gorsedd Good Order No. 330010 £150

5) Typed Letter Signed to Ithell Colquhoun from Michael Francis, Metropolitan Bishop-Primus and Abbot of the Brotherhood of the Love of Christ, Evangelical Catholic Communion. From the we learn that the Reverend Ithell Colquhoun was a deaconess of the Ancient Celtic Church

A typed letter signed from Michael Francis, the Metropolitan Bishop-Primus and Abbot of the Brotherhood of the Love of Christ (Evangelical Catholic Communion) dated 1965 confirms that the Reverend Ithell Colquhoun was a deaconess of the Ancient Catholic Church. He mentions that he was put in contact with her by Archdeacon Josef d' Arimathee (the Ven. P. Ross Nichols) which would confirm this tradition was active in modern Druidic circles. The Evangelical Catholic Communion is a thread within the tapestry of the Episcopali Vagrante, or wondering bishops, operating outside the established churches Sume rust marks from paperclips G to VG Order No. 73057 £145

The other items in this section were typed up by Colquhoun who c.1965 attempted to arrange the publication of these writings.

E.J. Langford Garstin, Astrology and Alchemy, (Typescript), Not Dated (c1930s?) In two parts:- The Planets 10pp (4900 words) + 6pp The Zodiac (2500 words). The typescript comes in an elderly folder with rather rusted metal fittings upon which Colquhoun states that this item was Garstin's own typescript and is accompanied by an original diagram by him, here present. The text is a succint and cogent examination of astrology, alchemical and kabbalistic principles. Pencilled annotations indicate where other diagrams were to be added though the concepts to be illustrated (positions on the Tree of Life and so forth) seem quite straightforward. That is not true of the diagram present which utilises coloured pencils and has some text written in pencil VG Order No. 330006 £225

E.J. Langford Garstin, Kings of Edom, (Typescript), Not Dated (c1960s?) 13pp (2800 words) Undated but probably typed by Ithell Colquhoun as it is from her papers and matches other typescripts by her. There are later annotations, also in her hand, giving the dates the books were published. A label on the first sheet gives Colquhoun's later Cornwall address and states she owns the copyrights. The format and paper match other typescripts made by Colquhoun. This is a never published work concerning the Gnostic nature of true Christianity with particular reference to the nature of Evil and the office of the Messiah. 5) Items from C.F.Russell Collection.
Russell first met Crowley in New York in 1918. He travelled to Cefalu where he practised sex magick with Crowley and was initiated into the higher degrees of the OTO. They parted company and Russell founded the Choronzon Club which operated with some success. In time he and those around him explored the mystical nature of the I Ching and geometry. His publications include his four volume autobiography Znuz is Znees, Memoires of a Magician, Manual of Electro-Combinational Engineering, Book Chameleon, Barbara Cubed and Provenance which described his book collection. Truly an independent and original thinker.

Frater Achad, Anatomy of the Body of God, Being the Supreme Revelation of the Divine Consciousness, Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum 1925 Larger format (11ins x 8ins) Coloured frontispiece plate, xv + 111pp. Nimbered limited edition of 250 (22 of them being given a Hebrew letter) signed by the author, this being number 6. Cloth spine with paper coloured boards, the decoration to the paper being particulalry striking. An elegant book, with decorated capitals. Russell's book Provenance mentions this copy. The corners are worn, The paper label on the spine is browned and there is some loss at the coners, A significant portion of the paper label on the front board has been lost. Some unobtrusive browning of the preliminary and last few pages. Good plus sound copy Order No. 320007 £300

Frater Achad, Chalice of Ecstasy, Being the Inmost Secret of Parzival by a Companion of the Holy Grail, Yogi 1923 1st Ed 1st Ed 86pp C.F. Russell has wrapped it in protective paper which is worn and aged. Very slight wear to top and tail of spine but Fine condition. It would be difficult to imagine being able to ever locate one in better condition. Loosely enclosed is a printed address label typed in the blue ink favoured by Achad at that time with Russell's address and Achad's return address Order No. 320004 £90

Frater Achad, Do you realise we are living in a New Aeon, Printed card 5ins x 3.5ins announcing a lecture by Achad in 1922, it employs the Egyptian columns design so much used by Crowley. There are crease marks where it has been folded to fit in a smaller envelope but never-the-less it is in Very Good condition. Accompanying it is a sheet of writing paper headed with the OTO lamen printed in red (slightly in relief). In what appears to be Achad is a rough draft of the Wheel of the Tarot, a diagram advertised in the back of the 1922 edition of Q.B.L.. This is a system by which the tarot cards are related to the signs and decans of the zodiac. There are some corrections, perhaps where Achad was working out the attributions. Other corrections indicate that he was wondering whether to use Crowley's titles for the court cards or the more traditional, generally used ones. Some folds but Very Good Order No. 320012 £200

Frater Achad, Chalice of Ecstasy, Being the Inmost Secret of Parzival by a Companion of the Holy Grail, Yogi 1923 1st Ed 82pp Handsome gilt blocked design of dove descending into chalice, frontispiece diagram. Annotated in pen by Russell (75 words plus some ticks and underlinings). In some parts he emphatically agrees with the author and in other parts he is less impressed. He also questions the gemetria ascribed by Achad to some of the principles described. It is apparent that he did find this problematic and enclosed is a carbon copy of a typed letter to Achad (85 words including Thelemic salutations) very diplomatically asking Achad to favour him with the Hebrew spellings. This carbon is signed by Russell in pencil using his Greek magical motto. Accompanying this is a typed sheet giving the Hebrewisation of the relevant names. This is from Achad as it is in the same blue ink as on the original envelope addressed to Russell and giving Achad's return address, postmarked May 24th 1923. There is very slight wear to top and tail of spine and corners but the book is in near Fine condition VG Order No. 320003 £150

Frater Achad, Crystal Vision Through Crystal Gazing, Yogi 1923 1st Ed xii + 116pp Quarter bound in dark red rexine with paper covered boards . Includes discussion of Dee and Kelly and makes reference to other members of the A.'.A.'. Etc. This copy has 20 or so pencilled annotations by C.F. Russell, mostly just underlining, ticks, exclaimation or question marks but three are brief comments, one identifying where the text alludes to Crowley. Fixed by paper tape to the rear pastedown is a printed postal label with the sender and addressees details (C.S.Jones (Frater Achad) & C.F.Russell typed in. Presumably Russell wanted to note the fact that he received the book direct from the author. A stamp on the label indicates the postage was 12 cents! There is very slight wear to top and tail of spine and paper covering spine but the overall condition is better than Very Good Order No. 320006 £150

Numbered limited edition on ccxx this being copy number lxiv signed "Will Ransom maker of books" on last page and by Frater Ahcad on the dedication page, An elegant book printed with blue embellishments (for Nuit of course) who image graces the title page. The limitation would have been chosen to align the work with the number of verses in the Book of the Law. Russell's book Provenance mentions this copy. Paper covered boads cloth spine. There are numerous references to Eckenstein in Confessions, he was Crowley's climbing partner an it was he who taught Crowley the system of mental training upon which so much of the Beast's magickal system is founded. Russell's book Provenance mentions this copy. C.F. Russell improvised a plain paper dustwrapper to protect the book and it is in near Fine condition. The only sign of aging being some browning of pastedowns and free endpapers. Order No. 320011 £1400

Aleister Crowley, Collected Works, Society For the Promotion of Religious Truth 1907 ix + 269pp + 283pp + vii + 248pp. All three volumes bound together in limp boards and the white cloth so favoured by Crowley, the "Essay Competition" edition. Top edge gilt. This copy signed by C.F. Russell on title page in Greek letters plus the customary Thelemicised astrological statement of the the date 6th Sept. 1922. Aside from the usual sun and the moon postions the positions of the other planets are given. Also the degree of the sun is stated, perhaps Rusell was more sensible than other Thelemites whose astrological staments ot date couple refer to two different times in the same month! Furthermore there is fixed to the front board a piece of paper upon which is penned the piece from the end of the introduction to Magick In Theory and Practice giving Crowley's titles, commencing "The Beast 666…" and ending "Aleister Croaley of Trinity College, Cambridge" (68 words). This appears to be in the handwriting of Crowley. A further note, in pencil and a different hand states this to be from the manuscript of the Part III of Book Law giving the page number and publication date 1930, the true date rather than the one that appears upon the title page. Russell's book Provenance mentions this copy. As is usual the white cloth has picked up some discolouration and there is some creasing of the limp boards. A Good plus copy with particularly nice asociations. Order No. 320009 £800

Russell's book Provenance mentions this copy As is usually the case the white cloth has become darkened with use, especially along the spine. Also the cloth has lifted from the back board somewhat but this is unobtrusive Overall VG with the two blanks at the front of the book which are sometimes missing Order No. 320010 £575

intersting list again but contains very expensive items including number 1 - red flames 12 & 13 for 44 pounds! I paid 10 pounds less (saving 25%) for these brand new at Atlantis books in london. How much do they really cost, Mr Caduceus?

I wouldn't have thought that to be the business of anyone but Caduceus Books. People run a business to make a profit. If you find the price too high, then you are welcome to purchase it elsewhere more cheaply. It's called market economics. 🙄

When it comes to books imported from abroad, there are various considerations such as whether the books were bought directly from the publisher or through a distributor, what the cost of shipping was, etc. 😯

Much of Caduceus's business is aimed at a niche market, as a glance at the rest of the list in question shows. I can't think of any other dealer in occult books who is offering this range of material for sale. 🙂

True.
The occult is a small niche market with very few customers. Also you cannot blame a business man for trying to make a profit, Caduceus is after all a business not a charity. The number of small publishers producing any new books of importance is very small, some are run by just one man. Caduceus helps to keep the occult book trade alive and well.
Best Wishes Robert.
Note to Mr Staley. Could you tell me the name of the Austin Spare book that Starfire are publishing? Since this year is the 50th anniversary of Spare's death it would be good to see something new by him made available to the public.

Speaking personally I have always found Caduceus prices very reasonable for what they are. Granted some things are expensive but that is a reflection of the rarity of these often unique items. Also I have found Ben Fernee to have always been very helpful in suggesting references when asked both in terms on books and also other (non commercial) areas.

Cheers Paolo

Yes, I can give you some detail, albeit temporarily succombing to the vice of threadular deviation. 😯

Starfire will be publishing a sketchbook which Spare inscribed to Frank Letchford in January 1954. No title as yet. I rate this sketchbook as prehaps the best of his that I have so far seen, with some beautifully fluid, vital and demonic sketches in there. Included is a preliminary sketch for 'Hecate Oak', the finished picture of which appears as a colour plate in 'Zos Speaks!'. This page appears to have been added to the sketchbook at some stage (whether by Spare or by Letchford is unclear 😉 ).

Starfire will subsequently publish other sketchbooks by Spare, including the sketchbook which Fulgur drew upon (though not literally, thank God 😆 ) for 'The Witches' Sabbath'.

I find his prices also pretty reasonable compared to other book dealers. One more proof: to this booklist I answered within a minute after receiving it with my wish, but like so often - already gone. Can't be so unreasonable...

absolutely right. consider this a public service announcemnt: for the beneift of those reading, red flame 12/13 can be purchased much more cheaply from other places in the uk.

When it comes to books imported from abroad, there are various considerations such as whether the books were bought directly from the publisher or through a distributor, what the cost of shipping was, etc.

i do not disagrree. to those of a sensitive disposition, my quesiton could perhaps be considered inflamatory and i retract it. consider this comment simply to highlight alternative sources of current in-print titles at more comeptitive prices than cadcueus.

Much of Caduceus's business is aimed at a niche market, as a glance at the rest of the list in question shows. I can't think of any other dealer in occult books who is offering this range of material for sale.

the point i made was not whether niche titles (like RF12/13, describing the life of Grady mcmurtry for instance) are available from caducues, more that there are other choices than him for such current, in-print items, at much better prices. no doubt the multi-hundred pound things he offers for sale on behalf of others are rare and no doubt demand the elevated prices. were i to have such money I would of course be investing like the rest of u....

...other scenarios include that perhaps the item was never actually avaialble? great way to boost a list and get people thinking it is much better than it actually is. that;'s the benefit of a virtual store versus a real book shop, of course.

i;'ve no trouble with the list, or mr fernee (thanks for pointing out his name) except that some items (especially the new stuff) are much more highly priced than elsewhere. simply pointing that out to those who wish to read it.

Greetings!

Well I checked back and once I have sold all the books I obtained, I will make a profit of 37% on my investment. However I have to be well into double figures in terms of sales before I make any profits at all.

I have no idea why some elses may be cheaper but it may be because the books come from California and past experience tells me that surface mail from the West Coast of USA is unreliable. A small enthusiast Spare publisher sent me books by surface mail from California and they never arrived, a disaster for him. Since then I have always paid more and had them shipped by air.

All best wishes

Ben

93 All,

I'd like to bring to a close the discussions on this thread relating to the prices charged by specific booksellers.

Long-standing members of LAShTAL.COM will know that I have always given space to Ben's lists and have, on occasion, been taken to task for doing so, as if the sudden availability in the marketplace of works, for example on this occasion, from the library of C F Russell, are not of significent interest to many visitors here.

I announce Ben's lists because I find them to be full of interesting bibliographic and biographical information and because there are many visitors here that collect Crowleyana: hardly surprising given that every page proudly pronounces this site to be home of The Aleister Crowley Society. I have sold a number of items to Ben in the past and bought more items from him: on every occasion he has been scrupulously honest and reasonable; for that reason I am very happy to promote his lists.

If any books in the list seem to be more expensive than one wants to pay, then don't buy from Caduceus. If you don't like to see booksellers' lists here - and I've posted many news items from Midian Books, Atlantis Bookshop, Weiser Antiquarian, Treadwells and many others - then it's just possible that you're barking up the wrong web site!

Regards,

Too late. This item has already gone to a good home, I understand.

And yes, the Swiss OTO merit a smiley, even though they may have bent in the force of the Ill Wind that Bloweth . . .

Caduceus Books

Yep, I totally agree..Ben Fernee is a 'diamond geezer' and knows his onions regarding the occult. I have bought a few books from him over the years, and I am always very happy with his enthusiasm and service. More importantly, I have asked his advice on several occasions regarding the purchases of original pieces of occult art work by AOS for example, where he has given alot of his time in discussing the occult art of AOS, and has always been very helpful in regard to understanding the various dimensions which surround the purchase of art work by AOS.

Agree with all the positive points relating to Ben and Caduceus books above.
Unfortunately i havent been in touch with the man for some time (but plan to be soon) but i think the differentiator between ben and other suppliers is that his condition gradings are very very accurate and this is reflected in the prices.

I have seen some other cheaper versions from other sellers and been appalled at the condition they are being sold in.

A genuine sole and more power to him.
