Thank you for reporting that. We have upgraded LAShTAL server a few days ago (a very big major upgrade) and it seems that one PHP module wasn't installed in the process. It should work OK now. I will be upgrading Wiki this week too and will also be looking into other things around the site. If you notice something broken or reporting similar errors do let me know. 🙂

Upon recommendation by EliteMachinery, I have switched to Linux. I am using said Linux right now. A superior product. I even have 3 months (from now) to get all my Windows data transferred to the new machine.

A thorough anal-ysis of Microsoft Windows indicates they/it are suitable candidates for disemboweling on The Black Lodge thread. I have struggled with Linux for a decade; I was never able to "switch over" because Linux was built for Geeks who think/speak in code. But then some fine fellows, from the Yellow School, if not the White, designed (at least two) Linux versions that imitate the look, feel, and function of Olde Windows (that is, Windows before they hung the opaque, non-openable curtains over the Windows).

LAShTAL Forums

A recurring problem is found towards the end of every LONG page in every thread. As the mounting number of posts comes CLOSE to the allowable end of the page, the thread will flip over to the next (new) page, displaying ONLY the Reply Box ... with no "last post" above it, and no page numbers or arrows to allow navigation.

A determined, resourceful individual may then go to the "Recent Forum Replies" list and select an earlier post on the stuck thread, and get back on track, or one can dig through the Forum's Table of Contents. But THEN, after getting "on track" again, and typing a post, the same thing recurs (solo Reply Box).

So the hard-hearted soft-ware will actually play this "dead end" game with two or three consecutive posts ... then it will decide enough is enough and actually post the "last post" above the Reply box (with page numbers and arrows) and things will become "normal" again ... until the new posts add up and approach (not reach) the end of the allowable page length.

Maybe, just perhaps, something can be done about this atrocity. (?).

I second the 'recent post' error; when you click a thread the last page is blank/no post. You have to click the second to last page link.

RE Linux I would love to switch but I don't think all my programmes would work? Esp. ms office which I bought, and some games (which I barely play..) and also most importantly my DAW music-making software won't be configured properly to the sound cards and ports/midi right?

Re Forum - we are looking into other options. Current software, while well integrated into the system, is just plain bad. It is also consuming a lot of resources on the server without any justification. I assume that yet again someone thought that CPU/RAM is cheaper than developer's time.

@Shiva Which distro are you using? I have moved to GNU/Linux back in 1999. Never looked back. Last Windows I actually had was Window ME. 😀 I now move between MacOS and Arch Linux both for work and privately.

@christibrany Depends. When it comes to Office suite you are right, MS products will not work on GNU/Linux distros. However, I prefer Libre Office even on Windows (see www.libreoffice.org) and there are other options out there. Depending on your needs, of course. If you are heavy Excel user with advanced mathematical needs then no, nothing can replace MS Excel. But if you are an average user then there is no real need to buy MS Office. They are discontinuing desktop Office and will push everyone to subscription. As for music software, that is really not my area but I have met many musicians who use Linux for their work. You might want to do a research and see what's out there. My choice is free/open source software whenever possible, even when I use proprietary operating systems such as MacOS everything I use on it (except the OS) is free/open.

This is correct. MOST of them will not work. So Word (a Microsoft proprietary) must be substituted by OpenOffice or LibreOffice (these alternative programs are usually bundled in with any Linux download). These alternatives take a bit of re-orientation when using them. This problem, correctly identified by you, is what kept me away from Linux so long.

My personal solution was/is to keep XP running on one machine, so that I can keep the production line running (with familiar Windows programs). But the Linux gets regularly used and reviewed on another machine. One by one, I search for programs to install. For example, a search for "Alternative Linus programs for Quicken" (accounting software). There are usually ten or more available, with reviews.

Hospital equipment-monitoring programs (life support) and Android are Linux-based. A new White Age of computing is available ... for free. Linux also has a tricky doodad called "Wine" (for some unknown Linux-lingo reason), and it's supposed to actually run Windows programs on a Linux machine. But the pundits often say, "I wouldn't trust Wine to run Quicken." So I just get the most similar alternative program.

If you're intimidated by the changeover, then you're where I was 10 years ago. But frankly, and non-sarcastically, I am fed up with Windows and the endless phasing out of support requiring a new purchase (more money) ... plus their crappy updating system. Upgrading to a new, revised Linux version is easy ... did I mention free?

Forget the games. they're just game-playing. As to the rest (music, etc), the alternative Linux programs usually can play ANY file. They are generally set up to import anything Windows can generate. You just have to seek out the corresponding buttons/links; these are usually similar to, or the same as, any Windows buttons/links, but there is usually a slightly-sloping, learning curve - not a steep, mountain-like; learning curve of, say, doing your taxes under a new format each year.

When you come to visit next month, I will give you a complete demonstration ... for free. Taxes, shipping, and other fine-print fees will be added at CheckOut.

I started with Linux Zorin (made in Ireland). It is supposedly the "most like XP" out there. But after reviewing/trying other versions, I have settled on Linux Mint, because it "feels" and "looks like Windows just absolutely fine. "Feels" is like driving a car or truck or plane. One has to get behind the wheel.

Chris, any Linux program can be loaded onto a USB jump drive/stick. Just download it, for free, plug it in, turn on the Windows machine, and Linux will boot up, and you can test drive it without disturbing anything. This is the first step in crossing the abyss ... after Microsoft has led you to the brink and abandoned you. (They/it will not abandon you if you pay more money).

This is the secondary motto of the left-handed brethren. Forget the one-time fee, with limited support time. What we need is a constant inflow of cash in smaller increments ... stretched out for the lifetimes of any paying user.

Better sounding than Pro Tools, Logic, Digital Performer, Live, etc; can do pretty much everything they can. Can also use superior Harrison mixing engine with all of the above in Mac/Windoze configuration.

Mixbus costs money but not much, almost all other Linux software (plug-ins etc) is free, as in "free beer" (no cost), and free as in "free speech" (open source, user-modifiable code).

I am still running a 7 year old Mac laptop, but the replacement end-game is a Linux machine. To get your feet wet, get a Chromebook with an IBM-type chip and install Linux; you can flip back and forth between chrome OS and Linux. This will most likely also work on any old Windoze machines you have lying around.

No. I remember Shareware, I even used it once for a (paid) Astrology program. I knew how to build a chart from scratch, had all the books (the 777 of astro), and I still have that program.

I first hit the computer keys in 1985 (at the age of 45), so I didn't spend my childhood and adolescence learning how to screw your neighbor with digital pranks. Of course you know how to defeat basic programs - all you youngsters grew up inside a computer. We used code back then. There wasn't even Windows.

Personally, I mistrusted ALL new developments and ended up upgrading anything only when forced to ("Support for this product will terminate in 30 minutes"). So I was always way behind the curve in contemporary technology. But, somehow, wherever I went in the work arena, I was the "expert" the younger workers called on when their stupid machine crashed or went crazy. That's crazy, isn't it?

And now we find you, Chris, remembering funnies about tech stuff that I never knew anything about ... but I have upgraded to Linux and am happy ... while you are facing financial and mental ruin by sticking with The Black Lodge.

Microsoft and other companies hold their source codes stricter than the IX* (back when), but this is also a good reason to always download programs from the Linux Repositories. If, say, you were to download a free Linux program from some unknown source, then you might be getting a modified program (with buggers inside). If you were to pay up for a program from a reputable source, that would probably not be a problem. But EOL and I don't like to pay for things, unless absolutely necessary, so we search ( and search, ad infinitum) for just the right program from an acceptably honest, fee source. I have a Win97 computer. It will not take most Linux distributions. It will take Linux versions that have been scaled down to minimal operability. Nix on that.

I have two XPs. It is a bit shaky to expect top level performance or comparability with the newer Linux systems.

Now Win7 or Vista are good to go. Vista was the saddest piece of crap Microsoft ever plopped onto the public's head. It's operating system probably caused several suicides. but the HARDWARE is top notch (varies by company, so look carefully). I have a Dell Optiplex 780, ultra-small, tiny box, that originally cost $1000. 500 Gb hard drive. Super fast. 4G RAM. It had Vista installed. The vista got canned, and Linux mint was installed. Best machine i every had. It cost me $108 from a reputable refurbisher on eBay (free shipping). I dare anyone to beat that price/quality quotation. (Gifts and rewired dlls not eligible).

I actually don't mind paying for software. I support various FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) projects and have worked for many in the last 20 or so years. I am in it mostly because of philosophical principles as I firmly believe that all software should be open and free as in freedom. Pricing it is just fine for me. When I say free software I mean this: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html When I started using GNU/Linux it was truly a black art to make it work as a desktop. GNU/Linux distributions today are so much more user friendly and unless one is working with something really specific (graph design though even that is not an excuse any more with software such as Krita) there is really no good reason to use closed source software.

I had that same insight, but forgot to mention it. I also intended to justify this technical off-topicness by recognizing that we are poking around in infrastructure refinement in order to streamline end-user satisfaction in getting the best LAShTAL input/output.
