To Perfect This Feast - The Gnostic Mass

Had a quick look and did not see that this had been posted previously.
Watched it a few days ago, thought I would share.

The Gnostic Mass is a hymn to the wedding of scientific truth and religious aspiration. It offers a truly modern spirituality. Aleister Crowley wrote the Gnostic Mass in 1913. He described it as the central ritual—public and private—of Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.). Today it is being performed on a regular basis throughout the world. Here is a record of a Mass at Swirling Star Lodge.

There's more interesting OTO ritual footage here and Jim Wasserman discusses secret societies and the Masonic influence on the design of Washington DC.

I thought that the Priestess was meant to divest herself entirely of her robe during the course of the Gnostic Mass?  Although it is a pubic (sic; or else that cute portmanteau, “semi-public”) ritual, either you are going to do something properly, or you may as well not bother to do it at all.  The instructions in Liber XV are quite clear.  If the Priestess is a “modest woman” who feels she ought to be “veiled” and/ or doesn't like being filmed in the nuddy, she is the wrong lady for the job on that lack of qualification alone, no matter how well she might perform any of the other requirements of the Mass

"This is none of me" (Liber AL II:52)

- Next, please? 😀

Liber XV

IV: OF THE CEREMONY OF THE OPENING OF THE VEIL

The PRIEST parts the veil with his lance. During the previous speeches the PRIESTESS has, if necessary, as in savage countries, resumed her robe.

Possibly because it is a public video on Youtube they would censor it or age restrict it if they showed a disrobed Priestess? However, the reconstruction of the Gnostic Mass on this BBC documentary on Youtube does show the 'Priestess' topless/naked in two sequences:

Perhaps the EGC/OTO could produce a DVD of the Gnostic Mass showing a nude Priestess?

There is a video on Vimeo, I believe, of the full mass, sans robe. If I recall correctly, it was filmed in Seattle. When I'm back at my computer, I'll try to find the link... unless anyone else has it handy.

Would you prefer a blonde, brunette, or redhead?

Half the folks in that video look like that are about to burst out laughing.

I find it quite difficult to take that sort of video seriously, given the state of the dress of the celebrants.
Another pet-hate I have is when you see that the robes have clearly visible, and strong, fold marks from storage. This indicates that they are not often used...so I seriously wonder about the sincerity of the participants.

Quite so, young Master William!  But before that, in the same section (IV) it has this (to which I made the specific reference in Reply #2):

During this speech the PRIESTESS must have divested herself completely of her robe. See CCXX I:62.

Also, the United States isn’t yet a “savage country” (possible opinions of some Lashtalians to the contrary, notwithstanding!)

Possibly this may be a reason – I am unacquainted with the legal embargos of YouTube or whatever - in which case, though, there is not a lot of point in doing it, as it doesn’t reflect the true actuality of a Gnostic Mass.

Ha!  😀 - “I don’t mind personally, so long as the collars and cuffs match”.

This is highly amusing, although the actual point behind it is quite serious & not a laughing matter, and I have a certain amount of sympathy for Priestesses having to face possible voyeurs amongst their congregation who have come along to see her get her kit off rather than from any more religious calling.

I hadn’t thought of this before, but I can imagine how it might turn out to be a pet peeve, michael.  I suppose one could say that of any magic(k)al robes not often used, where fold marks aren’t a sign of sharp fashionable creases but of long storage away in a linen cupboard.

I imagine also the offputting smell of naphthalene or some other moth repellent might detract.

I use mine most days; it's just one of those things that makes me wonder...

Don't mind! Seriously though the most important thing would be that she performed her duties well as part of an authentic Gnostic Mass.

I jokingly thought that the preferential matter of hair-color, could be solved by a continuously interchanging use of differently colored wigs, until i found out the meaning of J's joke about “I don’t mind personally, so long as the collars and cuffs match”. I guess this is an instance of one joke canceling out another one.

As for J's more serious remark concerning The Gnostic Mass, I am glad that I can not be a candidate for Priestess.

Also, on a more serious note, in this thread there is one film-recording of a Gnostic Mass lasting approximately 55 minutes, and another one lasting approximately 45 minutes. How long can one expect a Gnostic Mass to last at a minimum?
