Thelemic Lyrics

Just a bit of fun...

I've always considered the ultimate Thelemic lyrics to be those of My Way:

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way...

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried.
I’ve had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing...

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!

Any other suggestions for the finest Thelemic lyrics? I don't mean the umpteenth screech of "Baphomet" by some death metal band or other, but lyrics that provide the quintessence of Thelema?

What's your ultimate Thelemic anthem?

[Extra marks, of course, for anything by Led Zeppelin!]

This one could go on for days........let's see!!

I would have to have Zeppelin's KASHMIR at the top with the following:

Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face
with stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space to be where I have been
Sit with elders of a gentle race this world has seldom seen
who talk of days for which they sit in wait
All will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace
Sounds caress my ear
Though not a word I heard could I relate
the story was quite clear

And I have always been drawn to RJ Dio. Here is one fine example:

If your circle stays unbroken
then your a lucky man
'Cause it never, never, never has for me

In the palace of the Virgin
lies the Chalice of the soul
and it's likely you might find the answer there
_____________________________________

Then I come back to Zeppelin:

Walkin' side-by-side with death
The Devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howlin' more
They carry news that must get through
to build a dream for me and you
They choose the path where no one goes
They hold no quarter, they ask no quarter

Is it possible to turn Zep's lyrics into some fashion of religious belief? Gotta' love 'em!

You mean you haven't received your invitation to that holy and august order yet?

Well as it's just a bit of fun...

How about You are the Everything from REM...

Here's a scene
You're in the back seat laying down
The windows wrap around
To sound of the travel and the engine
All you hear is time stand still in travel
and feel such peace and absolute
The stillness still that doesn't end
But slowly drifts into sleep
The stars are the greatest thing you've ever seen
And they're there for you
For you alone
you are the everything

[...]

Everything is beautiful
And she is so beautiful
She is so young and old
I look at her and I see the beauty
Of the light of music

Always reminds me of the Star-Sponge Vision 🙂

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Resurrecting an old thread...
Dark Star, lyrics by Robert Hunter, reminds me of Crowley's description of Choronzon (and other entitites perhaps)

Dark star crashes
Pouring its light into ashes
Reason tatters
The forces tear loose from the axis
Searchlight casting
For faults in the clouds of delusion

Shall we go, you and I, while we can?
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds

Mirror shatters
In formless reflections of matter
Glass hand dissolving
To ice petal flowers revolving
Lady in velvet
Recedes in the nights of goodbye

Shall we go, you and I, while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?

John

Love is the Law, love under will.

Well, it might take a little brain-tweaking to get the full Thelemic quotient, but this song always gets my blood racing (and it is an anthem).

Berlin - Like Flames Lyrics

Something you've heard
somewhere you've seen
too real to ignore
you've chosen not to believe
from the black of their pain
to the white of their fear
in the dust they die
while eden lies near
the freedom bought, changed hands, was sold
this heat of love has turned ice-cold
we just can't escape it
like flames reaching out from the sun
we can't defeat it
like flames reaching out from the sun
from the garden of love,
been banished too long
and the balance will shift
between the week and the strong
once they would beg and they would plead
but now they demand
divided by those that need
and those that command
the freedom bought, changed hands, was sold
the heat of love has turned ice-cold
and we never learn but we know too well
heaven's died and gone to hell
now you watch but you should have run
like flames that leap
from the base of the sun
and you dream you're free
but you'll awake too much too late,
too much too late

Smashing Pumpkins - The Sacred and the Profane:
"Give me tears
Give me love
Let me rest
Let up on
Send the bored
Your restless
The feedback-scarred
Devotionless

You're all a part of me now
And if I fall
You're all a part of me now
In the sun
You're all a part of me now
You're all a part of me now

Will love ever be enough
Just in time to prove
Will words ever be enough
Just in time to lose

Give me signs
That arrest
It could snow
And happiness
Give me time
Give me peace
And I will prove
My release

You're all a part of me now
And if I fall
You're all a part of me now
In the sun
You're all a part of me now
You're all a part of me now

Will love ever be enough
Just in time to prove
Will time ever be enough
Will love ever be enough

You're all a part of me now
And if I fall
You're all a part of me now
In the sun
You're all a part of me now
You're all a part of me now
You're all a part of me now
And if I fall
You're all a part of me now
In the sun
You're all a part of me now

Will love ever be enough
Will love ever be enough
Will love ever be enough
Just in time to prove"

Tool - Jambi:
"...Want and need divide me
Then I might as well be gone

Shine on forever
Shine on benevolent Son

Shine down upon the broken
Shine until the two become one

Shine on forever
Shine on benevolent Son

Shine down upon the severed
Shine until the two become one

Divided I'm withering away
Divided I'm withering away

Shine on upon the many
Light our way
Benevolent Son

Breathe in union
Breathe in union
Breathe in union
Breathe in union
Breathe in union
So as one survive
Another day and season..."

Surely one of the greatest Thelemic lyrics of our modern age is Manowars "Kingdom Come". Guaranteed to bring a tear to the Eye of any who hear it...

Kingdom Come

See the white light
The light within
Be your own disciple
Fan the sparks of will
For all of us waiting
Our kingdom will come
Rays of power shining
Rays of magic fall
On the golden voice that speaks within us all
For all of us waiting
Your kingdom will come
Kingdom Come

Feel the white light
The light within
Yea it burns a fire that drives a man to win
For all of us waiting
Your kingdom will come

Kingdom Come

Words of power
Calling to us all
Holding us together while other kingdoms fall
No longer waiting
Our kingdom has come

Kingdom Come

Kingdom coming
Another kingdom falls
The rightful are waiting
But all are not rightful
Wait and receive the weight of the fall

Kingdom Come

I think we're all stretching the rules of that pre-postmodernist piece of Genius (Crowley's An Interlude from Book Four) a bit far here chaps! Everybody should know the ultimate Thelemic lyric is one word, repeated ad infinitum, from cosmic Krautrock Ubermenschen legends CAN on side three of their TAGO MAGO LP (now available on iTunes, fear fans). It's called AUMGN and it makes all of yer Eurovision Song contest winning black metal thanatossers sound like the Care Bears & The Tellytubbies having a like really mellow folk jam at Woodstock maaaan! All together now! AAAAAAUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMGGGGGGNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear god,
Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I dont mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
cause they dont get enough to eat

From god,
I cant believe in you.

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
cause they cant make opinions meet,
About god,
I cant believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god,
Dont know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it aint and so do you,
Dear god,
I cant believe in,
I dont believe in,

I wont believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
Youre always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And its the same the whole world round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
Is just somebodys unholy hoax,
And if youre up there youll perceive,
That my hearts here upon my sleeve.
If theres one thing I dont believe in...

Its you,
Dear god.

93,
There seems to be a missing link with what is the majority of modern Thelemic influenced music(k).
Skinny Puppy was one of the earlier in the genre of Industrial and experimental to harness the direct Thelemic content but interesting nonetheless.
An example:
Candle

here falls now undone looks beyond the credits sum livid fractures less of fate
the whisper winds blow the seed of hate
disturbed society dogs my turn with no values intend to raise ability tried and
tested pointless view gods got security
hands like snakes sow the seeds
raise all negative force-fed traces poisons all impure
profane the haunted heaven jeering leapt into the pit of calamity
a mean condition no wealth dents provisions for a time unknown
thelemic gestures all planned and hatched in seasons of dissolute pain
cried afflicted and infected oblige the systems perfect dream
distorted my words assume all that is programmed before and somewhat left
unsaid behind shutters
dirt before desire dusted crap ingested comes
stealing life that you are not visited warped torpedo night crawls through
the distant and irrelevant a good life's experiment fused
I'm laying violent hands upon a dead card calling cattle the playthings are so
abused the derelict dial phone clock pusher
delved in reliving the future too
I'm sticking pins and needles in this stinging rotten fleshlike substitute
pieces of half cooked meat that are
walking on this earth abort desire irrelevance ticks in front in view
a candle rhyme to realign burnt out candles on the wall seize the moment...
reach

I met Oghr in Cinci Ohio during the Too Dark Park days(Herion period:) and he was quite over the top with symbolism and Crowley at the time. I think it comes and goes but you will find some ties through the music.
On the Gothic side there are dozens of groups that dabble. Maybe this can open up some dialogue on the EBM scene also.

Hehehe, I'm delighted to see Can and Skinny Puppy mentioned here, though I hadn't linked either to Thelema myself. The Demon is quite right though, there may be just as many bands in the electronics/dark ambient/neofolk/apocalyptic folk etc etc movements who "dabble" as there are in the metal field. There's even a band called Lashtal, dunno if theyre still going. Italians i think they were.I'm not at home so can't quote any lyrics, I'll see what I can find later.

93 All,

Certain elements of The Beatles' "The Word" have always struck me as being somewhat thelemic.

Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
In the beginning I misunderstood
But now I've got it, the word is good

Spread the word and you'll be free
Spread the word and be like be
Spread the work I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
Every where I go I hear it said
In the good and bad books that I have read

Give the word a chance to say
That the word is just the way
It's the word I'm thinking of
And the only word is love
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
Now that I know what I feel must be right
I'm here to show everybody the light

Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love

93!

In industrial and goth, thelema and crowley have influenced a ton of them, especially in the early days - from ministry to the electric hellfire club, to penal colony to the mission uk, rosetta stone, and of course outright thelemic bands like current 93, killing joke, thelema, coph nia, etc. Puppy was always all about the process church, but they did have quite a bit of AC influences as well. I have a playlist on my ipod that's all thelemic and crowley-inspired music, and about 80% of it is goth. the rest of it is tool and hip hop, with the odd track here and there from a few pop and prog rock bands.

As far as EBM, most of the modern bands I listen to discovered jesus and forsaken industrial's Thelemite roots. which of course sucks, compare the latest apop record to when he still thought aliens were controlling our minds and you'll probably cry from how much suckitude exhudes from it. I can forgive VNV because he's irish catholic and still drinks beer.

Nowadays, most of the thelemic music I've heard has been hip-hop. Of course there's scholar, an OTO initiate in las vegas who raps about nothing *but* crowley, but there's also a few others I've heard such as NOX Oculta (brooklyn in da house!), bobby bladez, and koagula. And the pop bands. I'm still telling everyone to get "do what thou wilt" by impossible songs. I <3 that track.

Actually, maybe My Way IS the ultimate Thelemic lyric - but only if it's Sid's version. The one with the line "I killed a cat". Sid was probably experimenting to see if it had nine lives...
