Here’s four classic techniques for consciousness change from Discordian Pope Robert Anton Wilson.

Robert Anton Wilson should need no introduction. Alternately dubbed a “stand-up philosopher” or a “sit-down comic,” Wilson favored an unorthodox approach to thinking (and doing). He traversed many different fields of thought and systems of belief—ranging from General Semantics and quantum physics to Sufism and Aleister Crowley’s Thelema—and synthesized them all into a structure of mutable reality. To many of his faithful readers, his books are like the driver’s manual for the universe.

But it doesn’t stop there. Once you start doing the exercises in books like Prometheus Rising, you realize that you’re not just reading a driver’s manual of the universe—you’re also behind the driver’s seat! Most of the consciousness changing exercises in Wilson’s books take little effort but can produce lasting change in perception. All they require are commitment, patience, and practice.

Robert Anton Wilson possessed an uncanny ability to introduce his readers to their own mental projections of themselves and the universe—and thoroughly distort the boundaries between the two. His thoughts and ideas remain ever relevant well after they were published some 3o-odd years ago, and will only continue to gain relevance well into the 21st century. Ultraculture’s Jason Louv even wrote a piece at Boing Boing recently on the dawning future that Wilson predicted in Cosmic Trigger.

Below are four classic techniques for consciousness change taken from Robert Anton Wilson’s classic Prometheus Rising.

1. The Quarter Experiment

Vividly visualize a quarter (or a pound or euro, etc.), and imagine vividly that you will find that quarter in the street. Look for that quarter in the street every time you are out while still continuing to visualize it, and see how long it takes you to find it.

Next, explain the experiment using “selective attention” hypothesis—that is, of the bounty of lost quarters everywhere in the street, you were bound to find one sooner or later discover one. Then explain the experiment using the “mystical” hypothesis. In other words, you believe that you made the quarter manifest into this universe.

Now go looking for a second quarter. Compare the time it takes to find it using the “selective attention” hypothesis with the time it takes you to find it using the “mystical” hypothesis.

Here’s Wilson’s original text of the experiment, from Prometheus Rising:

“1. Visualize a quarter vividly, and imagine vividly that you are going to find a quarter on the street. Then, look for the quarter every time you take a walk, meanwhile continuing to visualize it. See how long it takes you to find the quarter.

“2. Explain the above experiment by the hypothesis of ‘selective attention’—that is, believe there are lots of lost quarters everywhere and you were bound to find one by continually looking. Go looking for a second quarter.

“3. Explain the experiment by the alternative ‘mystical’ hypothesis that ‘mind controls everything.’ Believe that you made the quarter manifest in this universe. Go looking for a second quarter.

“4. Compare the time it takes to find the second quarter using the first hypothesis (attention) with the time it takes using the second hypothesis (mind-over-matter).

“5. With your own ingenuity, invent similar experiments and each time compare the two theories—‘selective attention’ (coincidence) vs. ‘mind controls everything’ (psychokinesis).

“6. Avoid coming to any strong conclusions prematurely. At the end of a month, re-read this… think it over again, and still postpone coming to any dogmatic conclusion. Believe it possible that you do not know everything yet, and that you might have something still to learn.”

This experiment is designed to help the reader understand the role of thought and belief in structuring the universe. Whatever it is that you think, your mind will immediately set about proving—the existence of God, the sovereignty of the American President, or any number of conspiracy theories. Your mind will find proofs of those things everywhere.

2. Right Where You Are Sitting Now

Sit in a space where you will not be disturbed for half an hour. Begin thinking, “I am sitting here doing this exercise because…” and continue to list as many causes of performing this exercise as you can.

For example, you’re doing this exercise because you read about it on Ultraculture. But why do you read Ultraculture? How did you find it? Did somebody share a link with you? How did you meet that person? If you just happened across it on social media, what were you doing on social media that day? Was it in a particular group or forum?

Why do you belong to groups on that topic—be it magick, spirituality, consciousness? How did you get interested in those topics? Did someone influence you? What factors of your background and upbringing inclined to an interest in those topics?

Why are you sitting where you are and not somewhere else? How did your parents meet and why are you here at all? Why is this planet capable of supporting life, and why the kind of life that conceives of these types of experiments?

Repeat a few days later trying to answer questions you did not the first time around. Avoid metaphysical explanations—the exercise is mind blowing enough without bringing karma or reincarnation into the mix.

This experiment will help you understand the difference between software and hardware—or mind and matter, consciousness and brain. Hardware can only exist at one place locally (i.e., iPhone) but software is nonlocal and exists outside the hardware (i.e., Facebook profile).

3. Learn to Meditate

Take up a meditation practice. You can take a class or try to learn from a book. Practice for two fifteen-minute sessions every day for a month. Afterwards, visit someone who always manages to upset you or put you on the defensive. Can they still still press your buttons in the same way as before?

4. Alternative News Sources

If you are a progressive, spend a week reading nothing but conservative or libertarian news sources like The Drudge Report, The Blaze or Reason. Are you a conservative? Spend a week reading nothing but progressive or socialist websites like Think Progress, The Daily Kos, or Jacobin. If you’re a spiritual person, read nothing but the skeptic and atheist subreddits. Or maybe you’re a free thought rationalist—follow the /r/psychonaut subreddit, or read Ultraculture, or even [is_visitor]take a class on Chaos Magick.[/is_visitor][is_lead]take a class on Chaos Magick.[/is_lead][is_customer]take a class on Chaos Magick.[/is_customer][is_subscriber]take a class on Chaos Magick.[/is_subscriber]

Do your best to convince yourself and your friends that you sincerely hold these alternate beliefs. This exercise will help you break your reality tunnel—Wilson’s oft-used term that means a worldview conditioned in the individual through biological programming and socioeconomic factors. We are all trapped in reality tunnels, and every single one seems totally crazy except for our own.

These exercises are designed to allow you to see beyond your reality tunnel and take an active role in collectively shaping the universe.

It’s an incredible toolkit for causing change in your consciousness in conformity with will. Check it out here.

This news was what i was referring to in my prediction in the other thread; hot off the presses, and could not be more right up your alley, Baba:

my prediction in the other thread

And your quarter showed up almost immediately (with a short time lag due to trans-dimensional import taxes and other duties (kickbacks; bribes). I bet you weren't even looking for it.

Which Wilson is this again? Why does Thelema have two Wilsons, two Joneses, and two Bennetts? Egad, there's even two BafometRs and two Frater Shivas. The list may even be longer than my short list given here.

The Wilson in question is the American Robert Anton of that ilk, aka "The Smart One With A Sense Of Humor".

Not to be confused with the British Colin of that ilk, an "Angry Young Man" who never had a new thought after 25, and did little reading.

The Wilson in question is the American

I got that part. I actually attended two of his lectures live in-person, so of course I can do Wilson-differentiation and delineating via direct Magick.

RAW once called me "rude, persistent, and drunk" at a NYC Libertarian Book Club event in the '80s.

Correct on all three (that night, at least), in retrospect.

Oh, I didn't know we had a common persuasion in general.

II mean, it's like pointing out i'm tall, or something.

These things are obvious; why not make your point?

In some Mayan (Mexican indigenous/Indian) cultures, the village chief is only the chief if he is drunk.

Otherwise, he's just another thirsty dude. His authority, such as it is, is divine in origin; Ceres, not Bacchus, generally, as beer is more common than wine in those parts. Or the pulque/mezcal/tequila goddess if he needs authority fast.

in reality, while i was drunk that '80s night and RAW was right, and also admitting freely that i drink a great deal of beer, the number of living persons who have seen me punk in drublic (as the kids say) is fewer than a dozen.

But it's heartening to know that you have changed a lot since then.

Maybe read his books before you spout such nonsense, I'd start with The Occult and then graduate to Mysteries.    In fact no just go to Mysteries where you can learn about dowsing.  Have you ever been dowsing?

The invention of the printing press instigated the demise of the witch-hunts.  That's seems to be original idea as does the fact that when homo-sapiens' progeny became more upright and could see the horizon moreso they started to widen their horizons.

Oh, goodness. You are defending your hero just like that Christian lady defends Jesus. There is evidence in my inventory that (C)olin Wilson was what is sometimes known as a "hack" writer. I believe this describes a person who gathers stuff up, arranges it, and gets it printed for profit and for providing people with pleasant reading.

I wonder where the credibility to arrange such things, and the context thereof, came in. He seems to be reporting what other people do, rather than dealing straight from his own perception, refined by doing the work. Such people have their value, in many cases.

I was going to comment on the rest of the post, but have abrogated that.

@Shiva

He did the work.  He meditated and then walked to work.  That's the work eh?  He documents his work; physical object Dharana if you will (pun unintended).

Maybe. Type and depth of meditation would be required to answer "eh?" Plus a list of critical visions he attained. Walking to work is good for the physical vehicle, but many non-Path people do it, so I wouldn't call that doing the work, as understood by most nut-jobs around here.

He is writing about magicians. Did he do the magical work?

No would be he answer I'd reckon.   Yes he commented on Magick from the perspective of ex 'boy genius' modern philosopher not as Magickian.

The theme in Colin Wilson's philosophy coalesce with Do What You Will, he just arrived there from a different place.  He confirms that also, he said in an interview that "Crowley got it" more than anyone.
