Hanni Jaeger (Jäger)
Hi. My name is Nuno and I work in Portugal investigating the life and works of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. Crowley met him in the 1930s, and brought with him Hanni Jaeger.
I was wondering if any of you could send me, or tell me where I could find some pictures of Hanni. I already know of the image on the "Old Master" catalogue, but that is a painting and I really needed a good quality picture.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Unfortunately not. It is a fascinating book, full of rare facsimiles with a lot of letters from her (as well as other participants in the Crowley/Pessoa affair), but no photo. On another note, I am trying to hunt down the French magazine "Détective" from May 2nd, 1929 dealing with the Pessoa/Crowley affair, because (among other reasons) it contains three unknown/rare photographs of AC. A nearly illegible facsimile of that magazine is in "Encontro Magick", I have uploaded the AC pics, in terrible quality. Anyone has hands on that one and is willing to sell/share?
I don't know of any photographs of either HLJ or her work.
She was with Crowley in Portugal and Berlin in the early thirties. Although she is called an artist AC does not record her doing anything artistic in his diaries of the time. She never achieved any public notice and she died young apparently at her own hand. The German government of the time, or I should say a little later, were hostile to some artists as a matter of policy and then there was a significant war that was the occasion of much destruction.
I wish you every success but these are the sort of reasons why you may be having difficulties.
She must have been quite a sight. The unusually "nice" drawing of her confirms this, as well as this little Pessoa poem:
Her very being surprises.
A tall, tawny blonde,
It delights me just to think
Of seeing her half-ripe body.
Her tall breasts resemble
(Or would, were she lying down)
Two hills in the early morning,
Even if it isn’t dawn.
And the hand of her pale arm
Rests with spread fingers
On the curved, bulging flank
Of her clothed figure.
She entices like a boat,
Or like an orange, so sweet.
When, my God, will I sail?
When, O hunger, will I eat?
The eyes have shown it perfectly " a lifetime of pain and disgrace" however short it may have been . Where would the world be without Hannis. I say this not as an afficionado of S&M but one who appreciates those who have suffered the aforementioned quote undeserveadly (spell check required).
Moving onwards to times better.
Crowley didn't commit suicide and I was referring to the time that he pretended that he did and the author of Pedurado was only speculating that if the Hanni Jaeger who was on the travel lists to America was indeed her than she may have been doing the same thing as Crowley did. Speculation since it can't be fully verified that it was the same Hanni, though it seems it is, and nothing about her suicide came up in his research.
