First Steps in Thelema - Workshop
First Steps in Thelema
Evening Workshop – Marco Visconti
Wednesday 28th November 2018 e.v.
@ Treadwell's Bookshop, 33 Store Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 7BS
Tonight introduces the foundation practices of Aleister Crowley’s magickal system which a beginner can undertake at home. Marco Visconti, a Thelemite of over 20 years standing, looks at these exercises and short individual rites and will teach them in class, with with hands-on practice.
Many who have read about Crowley’s magick have told us they would welcome hands-on guidance on starting out in a practical sense. So in this workshop the key things involved in a home-based Thelemic life are covered in turn: from Liber Resh, a rite to welcome the sun, to Thelemic Yoga with particular attention to pranayama and asana, to the short Star Ruby and Liber Reguli rites, the Middle Pillar exercise, and the keeping of a magical diary. Absolutely no previous experience is expected. The evening workshop is both practical and theoretical, well structured and engaging.
Marco Visconti studied Religious Anthropology at Rome’s La Sapienza and Audio Engineering at Milan’s SAE, then worked 15 years as a touring musician, with bands such as XP8 and Faderhead. He’s been a Thelemite for 20 years, receiving initiation into the A∴A∴, Choronzon Club, and Ordo Templi Orientis: he is currently the driving force behind Ecclesia Gnostica Universalis in Anglia, a thelemic and gnostic church not tied to any particular Order or organisation, but wherein all Thelemites can work together.
A dynamic practitioner with a clear instruction style, he always sells out these engaging and fulfilling evenings. All welcome: no experience required.
Time: Arrive 6.50 for 7 pm start. Ends 9.15 pm

Although it mentions that the course contains "exercises and short individual rites", it seems curious that in attempting to attract beginners on their "First Steps", there doesn't seem to be any reference anywhere to The Book of the Law.
Could it be an attempt to try to separate and distance it from Thelema/ Crowleyan magick or 'Crowleyanity', as it is viewed in some quarters as a bogus artefact (i.e., not delivered from Aiwass as a divine messenger at all, but the higher centres of Aleister Crowley's brain)?

I doubt if that's the reason. For many decades now The Book of the Law has been regarded as a "bogus artefect" in "some quarters", without it making much if any difference to its canonical status.

This sounds like a good lecture. I’d be interested to see how energetic the practice of Thelema is.
Although I am physically able I don’t like particularly physical religious experiences. I was relieved to become Junior Warden in my Lodge because then I could sit down for a few hours. And when I now attend a church service I ostentatiously remain seated throughout, never kneeling and standing only to receive Communion. If anyone looks at me I grimace and mouth the word “indolence”.
I wouldn’t be up for many LBRPs or what-have-you. I’d be sitting there grimacing like a good ‘un.
If I can muster £20 I’ll come along. You will soon spot me; I am 7ft 8inches tall and weigh c.95lbs.
