Obligatory content in film (-trailer) about AC

The above web address leads to the film trailer for a film about Joseph Smith (1805-1844), the founding prophet of the Mormon church.
First question to all: What episodes from his life, should be part of a film trailer for a film about, Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), the founding prophet of the Thelema associated with him.
Second question to all: What parts of Aleister Crowley's life should be included in such a film?
In order to write a compelling screenplay, you have to pick a theme or overarching thread that weaves through the events of his life or a longer period of his life. "Prophet of Thelema" is too obvious and would lead to controversy, and would probably come off as hagiography.
I'd pick his love affair with Pollitt, which haunted him long after it ended, and can be woven into many other of the more canonical events of his life. Plus you get to use the late-Victorian plushness that movies like the Stephen Fry "Oscar Wilde" showcased so exuberantly, as well as having scenes with more famous names like Aubrey Beardsley, who never gets his cinematic due, and W.B. Yeats, as well as other Golden Dawn luminaries.
Opens with childhood, death of father, scenes illustrating his puritanical upbringing and rebelliousness, the famous Roman candle episode, his early mountaineering, his uncle's liberating influence... Act Two is Cambridge life, then his Stockholm experience with the Scotsman (businessman, forget his name for the moment), which opens him up to his homosexual side. The meeting with the bohemians and Pollitt, and his life as Pollitt's "wife." A scene with Beardsley surrounded by his drawings.
Weave his reading, alchemy and mysticism, his breakup with Pollitt, and the GD in here.
Then Act Three is wherever you want to take it, which will be hard with so much material. Should stay close to the intimate, the power of forbidden and not so forbidden sexuality.
With such a varied and full life a series structured like The Crown might work better with seasons in chronological order through various periods of his life
Season 1 could cover something like his birth to the reception of AL.
Trailer should include, romance, mystery and danger. Plenty of that to be found.
What parts of his life? All of it!
My will is fate.
There has to be a scene with his mother when he was a child calling him "The Beast" and the isolation and breakdown in the brutal public school. This exemplifies his early simmering hatred of organized Christianity and lifelong commitment to rebellion. I would exemplify the childhood of Victorian privilege and would also emphasise his early aspirations to be a poet (how could you leave that out?) maybe represented by him watching Yeats ('in black bilious rage') reading one of his poems at his apartment. I would put the incident of painting DWTW on the cliff's edge in the USA, drug usage and the crazy John Bull witch hunt regarding the events in Cefalu. Much more actually. It's a good question as your average trailer is what? Three minutes?
Cinema enables us to fit in a lot of information very fast:
VOICEOVER: I am of course an English gentleman of a very traditional and conservative sort...
[montage: AC injects heroin/is sodomized in an alley/ejaculates on Abramelin talisman/raises lance over supine nude priestess/walks through a chic Paris cafe with the Oscar Wilde bronze butterfly codpiece]
There goes the PG rating then.
I think any remotely accurate film about AC's life, however much one might euphemize and skirt around things, is going to end up so much beyond X-rated they will have to invent a new system.
Consider- any one one of the following would be enough to get to or beyond "R":
Daily hard and soft drug use;
Massive tobacco smoking and boozing;
Frequent and baroque sex acts with persons of all races, genders, and social conditions (often with more than one person at a time);
Incurring debts he had no intention or means of paying;
Blasphemy against the Baby Jeesus as a religion.
This is AC's average week. Not much chance of a PG here.
What is a baroque sex act?
Does it have to be performed wearing fancy accessories in a lace and velvet strewn room to harpsichord?
Asking for...myself. lol
I think that was a good montage choice. Titilates the viewer.
I think the film would be about 2 hours long, perhaps 2.5 and cover the following events with perhaps flashbacks and fast forwards/imagniations thrown in to speed it up:
1. Birth, friendship to Uncle and boyhood tomfoolery, religious indoctrination and rebellion
2. University days and climbing
3. Intro to Golden Dawn, travelling,
4. Marriage to Rose, Liber AL, founding the AA
5. Meeting Spare and other disciples, Newberg /Neuberg? Neuburg? and great magckical workings, Tunisia, China etc
6. Slow descent into poverty, addiction, hotel to hotel while still remaining fairly sharp and writing
7. Old age in Hastings, Kenneth Grant and DEATH
What did I miss?
If you allot half an hour to each you got a full film. 3.5 hours lol If a bit rushed.... It would need some SPECIAL kind of editing.
I skipped the courtroom stuff bc most people find that kind of thing boring? Plus it would add way too much... Maybe you could allude to it.
Oh I didn't mention the States either. Have to put that in there.
What a bloody long film. Maybe they would make it a two parter? Like Lord of the Rings style...
6. Slow descent into poverty, addiction, hotel to hotel while still remaining fairly sharp and writing
But the 6th instalment by itself would disproportionately cover about 31 years, from c. 1914 (the onset of the Great War, post-Equinox Volume I when AC went to America and his money ran out) up to 1945...!
What did I miss?
How about the inevitable voiceover, in sinister tones beginning: "He called himself The Great Beast 666 --- and so did all his detractors!"?
Norma N Joy Conquest
Ig: ... so much beyond X-rated they will have to invent a new system
It's known as "Z," the last letter in the English AlphaBeta, which stands for "Zero," and it means it's so horrible that no one can watch it.
T: ... under the section 666 rated [carriage return] go blimey
Blimey will not handle it. Bad karma. Disney is interested, though.
belmurru: “Prophet of Thelema” is too obvious and would lead to controversy, and would probably come off as hagiography."
Hmmm, I think controversy would be a problem anyway with respect to a feature-length film or theatrical film about AC, and “Prophet of Thelema” could function as a theme or overarching thread for his life.
And as demonstrated by the TV-series Strange Angel, something audiovisual involving AC can actually be well produced, as described in the following article "Posted by lashtal | Sep 8, 2019 | Media, News, Thelema": https://www.lashtal.com/inside-the-hyper-fantastical-vfx-of-strange-angel-vfx-voice-magazine/
A major challenge for a “Prophet of Thelema” themed theatrical film about AC, would be creating accurate audiovisual presentations of initiatic events like communication of the HGA, and Crossing the Abyss, so that they appeal to a non-initiate mass audience.
Crowley alone and in a garret.
Thinks. "I wonder what I can write about?"
Voice from Street: "Extra extra!! Read all about it! Titanic sinks!"
Crowley: "Aha! The Titanic!"
Maitre d'Hotel at Cafe Royal:
"Monsieur Crowley, women are not allowed in this bar!"
Crowley: "Why on earth not? This woman is my consort."
Maitre D: "We are trying to exclude a certain type of woman..."
Crowley: "Are you suggesting that the Scarlet Woman is a prostitute?"
Crowley: "And you can tell Binky that if he doesn't shut that dog up I'll kick it right in the lingam. Tell him to put that in his pipe and smoke it!"
puttin it here
for bling's sake
second season gets better
wr: ... so that they appeal to a non-initiate mass audience.
I have seen several well-produced films of a metaphysical nature. If they are really good, they go right over the head of the audience, get poor reviews, and do not do well at the box office.
Now if someone wanted to produce a film along the lines you presented, coupled with the special effects of Star Wars (for things like The Cairo Working, climbing mountains, The Vision and the Voice, Alamantrah, etc), and that someone had enough money so that he/she didn't need to make a prophet [sic], well that would be just fine.
Well, Ridley Scott has been involved (or is still involved (executive producer)) with the TV-series Strange Angel. Someone like George Lucas would have enough money. With the great success of a Fantasy TV-Show like 'Game of Thrones', something about a universe - or universes - based on the concept[-s] of "The White School", "The Yellow School" and "The Black School", described by AC in his book Magick Without Tears, can be of interest for George Lucas as executive producer, not directly involved as director, to make him even more money.
With respect to something audiovisual more directly involving AC as the Prophet of Thelema, the special effects crew should have access to the "several well-produced films of a metaphysical nature" mentioned by Shiva, so that they know what they have to improve to appeal to a non-initiate mass audience. I would also recommend having initiates as consultants for the special effects crew.
Thanks to Tiger for bringing my attention to the TV-series Gotham, I will mention it for persons I mostly visit to watch TV-series and/or theatrical films together with them.
I suggested George Lucas as executive producer in the sense of him contributing to the film's budget and simply securing funds, not in the sense of him getting involved in the filmmaking process.
This, as an answer to Shiva in his #116907 Reply to this thread writing "Now if someone wanted to produce a film along the lines you presented, coupled with the special effects of Star Wars [...] and that someone had enough money so that he/she didn’t need to make a prophet [sic], well that would be just fine."
I view Pi (1998) directed by Darren Aronofsky as a very good metaphysical film, with little use of special effects. And I think a film about AC as “Prophet of Thelema”, would benefit from him, or from the director Guillermo del Toro (director of the film Pan's Labyrinth released 2006), being involved in the filmmaking process. Director Guillermo del Toro being involved, would garner for more use of special effects, for example covering the destruction of the world by fire, taking place in 1904, at the birth of the Aeon of Horus.
…… use of special effects, for example covering the destruction of the world by fire, taking place in 1904, at the birth of the Aeon of Horus.
Would it be too anticipatory and anachronistic (by about forty odd years) to feature several Wilson clouds, perhaps? (A la the ending of Stanley Kubrick's seminal Dr Strangelove)
Ka-boomishly, war-enginely yours
Would not nuclear explosions, with "Now let it be first understood that I am a god of War and of Vengeance. I shall deal hardly with them. I will give you a war-engine. With it ye shall smite the peoples; and none shall stand before you. I am the warrior Lord of the Forties: the Eighties cower before me, & are abased. I will bring you to victory & joy: I will be at your arms in battle & ye shall delight to slay. Success is your proof; courage is your armour; go on, go on, in my strength; & ye shall turn not back for any!" in deep scary voiceover, be extremely controversial?
And if so, would such extreme controversy be good marketing and PR for such a film?
B-B-But Mr Bred: Would not A.C., as the subject-matter for such good marketing & PR for a film in the first place, as a putative "master of controversy" be extremely controversial himself? (With or without 'deep scary voiceover').
Therefore supremely suitable, say I. Or would do, if I were being entirely serious in the first place. Which I'm not exactly sure I entirely was or am?
Well met again (but as Vera sayeth, don't know where & don't know when)
JJB: "... if I were being entirely serious in the first place. Which I’m not exactly sure I entirely was or am?"
On a serious note, an accurate film about AC as “Prophet of Thelema”, will have to cover what AC was serious about with respect to this Thelema.
Such a film including a sense of voluntary and/or involuntary humor and comedy with respect to AC, will of course be a redeeming trait with it, for a mass audience.
The expression "Equinox of the Gods" as used by AC, "... means that that the sun, previously having shed its influence through the constellation Pisces for some 2,000 years, now radiates through the star-complex known as Aquarius. This means that if one looks up at the sun at the vernal equinox it appears with the first degree of this constellation as its back-ground. The solar emanations are therefore particularly affected by the influence of Aquarius during the period of time (approximately 2,000 years) during which it appears behind the constellation Aries in the earth's elliptic." (Source: Cults Of The Shadow, by Kenneth Grant, 1975 edition, pages 105-106.)
Crowley in his The Book of Thoth: “In this card it has been necessary to depart completely from the tradition of the cards, in order to carry on that tradition. The old card was called The Angel: or, The Last Judgment. It represented an Angel or Messenger blowing a trumpet, attached to which was a flag, bearing the symbol of the Aeon of Osiris… The card therefore represented the destruction of the world by Fire. This was accomplished in the year of the vulgar era 1904, when the fiery god Horus took the place of the airy god Osiris in the East as Hierophant.”
This “destruction of the world by fire”, and quote from AC's The Book of Thoth, refers to "the Equinox of the Gods" (which according to AC happened when the March equinox, (also called the spring equinox, or the vernal equinox) occured in the northern hemisphere 1904, that is, March 20th, 1904).
In a film about AC as Prophet of Thelema, including this “destruction of the world by fire” on the March equinox in 1904, can be done using special effects demonstrating the precession of equinoxes. (Examples demonstrating precession: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emRRCoraQaQ - Precession of Equinoxes, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlVgEoZDjok - Precession of the earth)
The said “destruction of the world by fire” can be preceded by a scene where JC states; “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled!" (source: Luke 12:49), as the destruction of our world by fire is prophesied or foretold numerous times in the New Testament part of the Christian Bible. (Source: https://www.openbible.info/topics/god_will_destroy_earth_by_fire - "100 Bible Verses about God Will Destroy Earth By Fire".)
Given that the OP in the thread begun by yourself referenced the film trailer for Garner's "All is Well", and enquired what parts and episodes (although can't tell a great difference between them myself in terms of what's being asked, to be honest) of AC's life should be included in such a trailer: I am curious just how many seconds you envisage such a clip involving "destruction of the world by fire" lasting?
The Gardner trailer lasts 1:28 in total; in view of the length and complexity of AC's life, let's triple that --- which is a longg time for a film trailer --- which comes to 4:24, and even round it up for convenience to the 4m 30sec mark. Meanwhile, the suggested clip from Kubrick (including the Pete Sellers gem)
using some Wilson clouds to illustrate said destruction, comes to 1:58 in total but only a few seconds of these (maybe from about 0:21) need actually be used as sufficient for the purpose...
The said “destruction of the world by fire” can be preceded by a scene where JC states
But Why? The film's not about JC but AC, and the Equinoctal destruction a very small part of the total revolution by Thelema and AC's biography.
In a film about AC as Prophet of Thelema, including this “destruction of the world by fire” on the March equinox in 1904, can be done using special effects demonstrating the precession of equinoxes.
Does it really need to be explained what on earth, what the heck, is meant by "precession", and illustrating it with special effects, to boot?
I ask again therefore, and would really like to know how much of the whole "reception"/ destruction of the world by fire "episode" in AC's life should this occupy, and therefore how much of the suggested 4m 30sec traiier (how many seconds) should be occupied by the destruction by fire of the Old Aeomn?
Wellbred: The expression “Equinox of the Gods” as used by AC, “… means that that the sun, previously having shed its influence through the constellation Pisces for some 2,000 years, now radiates through the star-complex known as Aquarius.
Yes, this is the ferry-tale-to-borderline-illusion tale AC promoted (and 60s hippies reinforced). ♫ This is the dawnin♪ of the Age of Aquare'eus! ♫
You (WellRead) may step in to expose the illusion, later in your lengthy post, but I have herewith seized upon your first-line entry in order to straighten out some kinks in the timeline.
This very topic (Equinoxes and Aeons) forms the substance of Chapter One (Chrono) in The Master Codex. So many New Age people are twisted in their mentat about this. Thelemites are not immune from the distrortion.
Here, take these remecial snippets from The Codex ...
"The position of the Sun on the day of the Vernal Equinox is presently in the constellation of Pisces near the border of Aquarius.
But another concept, the Precession of the Equinoxes, describes how the Equinoxes move westward along the ecliptic relative to the fixed stars.
Modern star maps show the Vernal Equinox entering Aquarius in a little less than 600 years (in the future, from the present year, 2018).
Specifically, the Vernal Equinox passed from Taurus into Aries in 1865 BC, passed into Pisces in 67 BC, will pass into Aquarius in 2597 AD, and will pass into Capricornus in the year 4312 AD.
Technically, this means The Age of Aquarius did not begin in the hippie era of the 1960s, but that it is still a few hundred years in the future (in reference to the time of the writing of this treatise - 2018).
A popular metaphysical concept differs somewhat from the astronomical version. It states that the Sun at succeeding Vernal Equinoxes is “backed up” by an astrological sign that changes approximately every 2,000 years. Such a timespan is knows an Aeon or an Age (thus we have The Age of Pisces; The Age of Aquarius; etc).
Each Aeon or Age is said to have specific characteristics that influence the evolution of consciousness.
The whole cycle, wherein all twelve signs are passed through and the starting point is reached again, is a Grand Equinox of ±25,771.5 years."
The rate of precession is the derivative of:
p = 5,028.796195 + 2.2108696 × T + higher order terms.
The constant term of this speed (5,028.796195 arcseconds per century in the above equation) corresponds to one full precession circle in 25,771.57534 years (one full circle of 360 degrees divided with 5,028.796195 arcseconds per century) although some other sources put the value at 25771.4 years, leaving a small uncertainty. –Wikipedia
" Mathematically, 25,771.5 years divided by 12 signs/ages is 2,147.6 years. So, yes, an Aeon is about 2,000 years.
When we stop to consider all the astronomical data and metaphysical figures, there is perhaps a bit more than a “small uncertainty,” but at least we can round everything off and agree on the ±2,000 year figure.
Theoreticians tell us that the effect of the Aeons don’t end and begin on any given date, even if one can be determined, but that there is an overlap of adjoining Aeons, called a transition period. Various pundits tell us such periods last around 200-3oo years. A review of history shows us this transitional overlap is probably closer to 1000 years, 500 years in either direction from the changeover date."
Anyone who wants more detail can ring me at firstname.lastname@example.org and say SEND CHRONO, and I'll happily furnish a pdf of the entire Chapter One, which (of course) orients me and the reader in a proper perspective of Time as it overshadows our efforts to regulate the Universe.
WR [AC quote]: The card therefore represented the destruction of the world by Fire. This was accomplished in the year of the vulgar era 1904, when the fiery god Horus took the place of the airy god Osiris ...
The 1904 Firestorm took place on the higher planes. It has slowly working its way down the ladder of the Aethyrs and the Spheres and is now visible to anyone. Regardless of whether Earth's climate is heating up due to man-made emissions, or by passing through a photon belt in space, or by increased Solar activity, the bottom line is that it's getting hotter. The sky is not falling (yet), but the World is being slowly consumed by fire.
The esoteric-scientific version states that the atomic blasts of the 50s released massive amounts of radioactive, hot, positive ions (yang) into the atomo-sphere. They were/are attracted to the negative, cool, (yin) north pole, where they stir up molecular activity and cause heat waves in Alaska and Greenland to melt.
JJB: I ask [...] therefore, and would really like to know how much of the whole “reception”/ destruction of the world by fire “episode” in AC’s life should this occupy, and therefore how much of the suggested 4m 30sec trailer (how many seconds) should be occupied by the destruction by fire of the Old Aeon?"
The following url address leads to a sort of trailer covering the Complete Biographical Encyclopedia about Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, seventeen volumes in all, which clocks in at 3m 37sec: https://www.lronhubbard.org/news/l-ron-hubbard-series-release.html?link=body-title
The whole “reception”/ destruction of the world by fire “episode” in AC’s life should occupy only between 5 to 10 seconds at the very most, of a trailer for a film about AC as the Prophet of Thelema. (The “precession” could be part of extra material if the film was published as a DVD). I suggest the following voiceover for this part of the trailer:
"During his childhood within the evangelical Christian movement the Plymouth Brethren, Aleister Crowley was indoctrinated in the Bible, within which it is stated that God in the future will destroy the world by fire in the Last Judgement. This destruction of the world by Fire, was according to Aleister Crowley accomplished in 1904."
Shiva: "The 1904 Firestorm took place on the higher planes."
I have mentioned the use of special effects concerning “the destruction of the world by Fire” in 1904 (,for example involving the sun, and a hawk, as they were used as important symbols by AC as Prophet of Thelema), to appeal to a mass audience which is used to special effects.
"... qabalistic commentator Colin Low explains, there tend to be multiple interpretations of the Tree of Life — a “Model A” which states that “the sephira Malkuth represents the whole physical universe; the sephiroth from Yesod to Chesed (the Microprosopus) represent a sentient, self-conscious being; the supernals represent the God of the whole universe, God-in-the-Large” and a “Model B” in which “the Tree of Life is a model of human consciousness; the supernals represent the God within, God-in-the-Small.”
In our discussion here, Christian eschatology and associated forms of occultism tend to utilize the first model, whereas Thelema utilizes the second. This is why Crowley can claim grades of attainment within the supernals, while more Christianized forms of occultism (including the Golden Dawn) tend to suggest that it would be impossible to reach those spheres during terrestrial existence."
"... in the latter interpretation of Thelemic eschatology [...], the macrocosmic potential of orthodox Thelema remains small in scope: the passing of the Aeon of Osiris into the Aeon of Horus. Crowley has replaced the Trump of “Judgement” with the Atu “The Aeon” — a temporally limited formula. [...]
Instead of purifying the gross matter of the aspirant to allow for the descent of the supernals, the Christian desires the transmutation of all matter to allow for a true and lasting Incarnation. We pass from microcosmic attainment to eschatological transfiguration. This is the secret key of all traditionally Western mysticism and esotericism (at least, prior to the late 19th century). Crowley, meanwhile, clothes Eastern metaphysics — “only the veils must be purified, to reveal the Perfect already within” — in the Rosicrucian language of the West. As Liber AL II.58 proclaims, “Yea! deem not of change: ye shall be as ye are, & not other. Therefore the kings of the earth shall be Kings for ever: the slaves shall serve. There is none that shall be cast down or lifted up: all is ever as it was.” (Source: The Blooming Staff: Eschatology – The Marker of Christian Occultism October 11, 2016 BY Nicohlas Lacetti - https://www.patheos.com/blogs/agora/2016/10/the-blooming-staff-eschatology-the-marker-of-christian-occultism/)
(The preceding text is quoted from an article titled; Eschatology – The Marker of Christian Occultism, authored by Nicohlas Lacetti, source; https://www.patheos.com/blogs/agora/2016/10/the-blooming-staff-eschatology-the-marker-of-christian-occultism/: )
Would it within a film about AC, be possible to convey - in a mass audience friendly way - that the Eschatology (understood as the study of the Last Things, including human and cosmic destiny) of the Thelema associated with him, is small in scope, and requires only the destruction of the personality or ego, as the end-times of the ‘self’ and the waking to the Self. While in the case of Christian eschatology — and the eschatology of many occult systems in the West before the infusion of Eastern perspectives that occurred in the late nineteenth century — what has to be transmuted is nothing less than the cosmos itself?
It's been a long while since I posted here but a while ago I wrote a screenplay based on the Aleister Crowley. I based the whole 90 minutes our so solely on Crowley's magical retirement in Paris 1909 where he came up with Liber Pyramids and possibly worked on The Book of the Law itself.
The tagline is something like: Tantra, Mantra and Yantra in pre-war Gay Paris, the story of a Master of the Temple and the Apotheosis of French Culinary Arts.
If anyone is interested in reading it. I might try to upload it somewhere.
Hello dvd464, your screenplay based on the Aleister Crowley, what genre is it?
Dealing with "the the end of the world" subject matter within this film, Kubrick narratively approached it as a dark commedy, which structurally is not written, performed, lit (using extremely hard and dramatic lighting, like in a noir), edited, shot, or scored, like a comedy. (Source for more information about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlkt5Q9a9Ek - Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Paradox, by "BREADSWORD".)
An approach resembling this, can function in a film about AC as prophet of Thelema, where he through communication with "a messenger from the forces ruling this earth at present", is anointed as "scribe and prophet", of a new Aeon, in which the question "How this new Aeon [...] will develop ..." is "... for us to determine, growing up ourselves in the way of the Law of Thelema under the enlightened guidance of the Master Therion. [...] [And] [...] All men and women are invited to cooperate with the Master Therion in this, the Great Work." (Source for quotes: 1938 edition of The Book of the Law, with introduction by AC.)
Hi wellreadwellbred. I don't always understand what you talk about in your posts but I enjoy reading them. Funnily enough I did my masters thesis on Kubrick. I was in the same class as Carl Abrahamsson's brother at Stockholm University. You might have already guessed that English is a second language to me 🙂
