Well, yes. I like some of those musical artists. But what does this have to do with Aleister Crowley?

Well, yes. I like some of those musical artists. But what does this have to do with Aleister Crowley?

The Devil is in the details. Ozzy Osbourne performed a song named Mr. Crowley. The Beatles featured Crowley’s picture on the cover of Sergeant Pepper’s. The Moody Blues recorded a tune named Dear Diary, and we know how adamant Crowley was when it comes to keeping a magical record. Sympathy For The Devil as recorded by The Stones is an obvious allusion to Crowley. Sunshine of Your Love by Cream is clearly inspired by Crowley’s desire to be addressed as Little Sunshine. There: thread saved.

Sure … but this thread is Favorite Music, and all kinds of non-AC things are being listed.

Choronzon is dispersion. He is working this thread.

Now if the title was Favorite Music that includes AC references, that would be more like the real thing … for LAShTAL.

I suppose the simple solution would be to move this to the off topic forum or sandbox or whatever.

I will bite; currently my favourite musical artists to listen to this past month or so in no order are:

    David Bowie
    Triptykon
    Judas Priest
    Led Zeppelin
    Celtic Frost
    Alcest
    Meshuggah
    Radiohead
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Travis
    Enya
    Deftones
    Tears for Fears
    Depeche Mode

and theres some others I like a lot but havent listened to in maybe a few months:
    Beck

    Aphex Twin
    Cornelius
    Underworld
    Bjork
    The Beatles

Sympathy For The Devil as recorded by The Stones is an obvious allusion to Crowley.

I’ve always felt the same. Although the Stones have never openly admitted it to my knowledge.

Lyrics to “Sympathy for the Devil” :

Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name
    But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
    I stuck around st. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain
    I rode a tank
    Held a generals rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    Ah, what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
    I watched with glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made
    I shouted out,
    Who killed the kennedys?
    When after all
    It was you and me
    Let me please introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached bombay
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what’s confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
    And all the sinners saints
    As heads is tails
    Just call me lucifer
Cause I’m in need of some restraint
    So if you meet me
    Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
    Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I’ll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
    But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
    Woo, who
    Oh yeah, get on down
    Oh yeah
    Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, what’s my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what’s my name
I tell you one time, you’re to blame
    Ooo, who
    Ooo, who
    Ooo, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Oh, yeah
    What’s my name
Tell me, baby, what’s my name
Tell me, sweetie, what’s my name
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Ooo, who, who
    Oh, yeah

What in the lyrics do you see as an allusion is to Crowley?

Does anyone know that Marilyn Manson had admitted to being in the OTO? Some of the lyrics in some of his songs were inspired by “Diary of a Drug Fiend” as well as Liber AL vel Legis.

“Please allow me to introduce myself

    A wealthy man anti-Christian?

Is the nature of my game

    Doing covert intelligence work?

    “I rode a tank
    Held a generals rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank”

Alive during World War II? Had influence on the Hitler and the Nazis? Didn’t his best friend Fuller design the blitzkrieg?

“Tell me baby, what’s my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what’s my name”

Maybe it’s just Lucifer or Satan or The Devil. But he keeps asking “What’s my name?”

Supposedly it was influenced by Jaggers associations with Kenneth Anger at the time. But i’ve never heard anyone say that SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL was “an obvious allusion to Crowley” as @herupakraath did. I guess it was just something that I felt and thought. I don’t think it’s obvious but for me the influence at least is there.

oh yes I like Manson a lot as well. I saw him live for the first time in January; it was very well done.

I don’t think he was ever in the OTO, but he has/had membership in the Curch of Satan. He is mostly a poser as far as occult practises go, is my understanding.

Thanks for your reply, EM. Personally I think it’s more likely a reference to Lucifer or Satan, but it’s a matter of opinion.

Sympathy For The Devil as recorded by The Stones is an obvious allusion to Crowley.

“obvious allusion” could be considered an oxymoron no? I’ve never heard anyone say this before so it intrigued me because it’s something that I felt yet cannot prove.

    @michael-staley

You are most likely correct. There is nothing absolute in the lyrics but when the music and lyrics fuse and you consider the context of the time perhaps a loose connection can be made (especially considering Kenneth Anger’s influence on the Stones.) It was more or less just a feeling I had.

The song was recorded in June 1968 just days before the release of the film Rosemary’s Baby in theaters. It was all part of the grand theater present during the “Satanic 60’s” as I like to call them. The shadow side of the Peace/Love movement that began (about the same time) when Anton LaVey “declared the founding of the Church of Satan and proclaimed 1966 as ‘the Year One'” (wikipedia)

The next summer (1969) were the grisly Tate murders and one could make a case that all these events led up to this inevitable end. Sympathy for the Devil is a powerful song nonetheless.
