I'm just curious, is this book actually still in print? I can't find it anywhere. I recently ordered a copy off of amazon, but they don't even carry it, I had to buy it used from a private seller that resells books that libraries don't need anymore. The cheapest I could find was like $38, the most expensive being like $128. It just seemed like there were new versions out SO recently that it couldnt possibly be going for that much, so I figured I'd inquire to some people who would actually know. =P lol.

And, yeah, I got the $38 one.

93,

Well, you gotta understand the way it works with Crowley books...the DAY it goes out of print every copy in the world immediately doubles in price, and then depending on demand it goes up or down from there. A few months ago I was looking for a new copy to replace my batter, pages coming loose written in copy and the cheapest I could find anywhere - Amazon, Abebooks, etc - was $75 for the most recent New Falcon edition. I ended up finding an old hardcover Llewellyn edition for the same price...now I need a cheaper paperback for reading....

On a side note, I heard (AWHILE back) that the Caliphate was going to publish an update - non condensed - version through their Thelema Media publishing outles...Of course the Equinox V.4 #3's been "coming soon" for how long now? 😉

93 ,

ahh, I guess the simpler, non-babbling-on reply would have been: No, it's not still still in print 😉 But, I figure I'll babble on some more.... I believe all Crowley books published by New Falcon (and maybe eventually other printers) are being taken out of print and removed to the "Thelema Media" imprint. I noticed on the New Falcon webpage titles like AHA, and The Heart of the Master are no longer listed. I also recently purchased a copy of "Gems from the Equinox" as a gift for someone and noticed that it was the New Falcon edition with stickers over the old ISBN directing it to a new isbn listing it as a Thelema Media publication. I only bring this up as if anyone needs to purchase these titles you may want to get them now while they're available cheaply.

Interesting... Is Thelema Media even a real publishing company? Cause on their website all of their 'titles' just link to the amazon pages of books you have to buy used. Or are they merely taking their sweet time in reprinting them?

Does anybody know what is behind this, that New Falcon stock is being rebranded in this way? I heard some time ago that New Falcon would not be publishing any more Crowley.

Drage: I "suppose" they're real, It's the (c)OTO's publishing house. I assume it's their attempt to take closer control over Crowley's printed works. While I don't neccessarily blame OTO for the time it takes for them to reprint stuff it still does take a long ass time before things actually materialize, Like I said previously their printing of the Urn and other papers, Eq. IV #3 as been advertised as coming soon for like 6 or 7 years now. So I don't know if they're taking their sweet ass time or if it just takes a long time for anything to organize and appear.

Michael: I've been wondering what the catalyst is behind this myself, it almost appears as if OTO and new falcon had some sort of falling out as I don't see any of the weiser books being pulled. I just gave the same friend that I gave Gems to a ring and he says the copy of "The Revival of Magick" he recently bought is also a New Falcon book with a sticker over the ISBN. I think possibly that what's left of the New Falcon stock will be it for these titles until "Thelema Media" eventually gets around to running off new copies of their books which could be a hela-long time.....of course it could be next week 🙂

I just looked at gems on Amazon and it's only available from other sellers for like $195 which is pretty nuts considering I just bought the previously mentioned copy like two months ago for it's sticker price!

As a side note, is it just me or are we in a period of silence for Crowley books lately? Seems like the 90's had quite a few editions popping up all over the place and now in the 00's we've got what that insanely priced Astrology book and nothing else?

Why Mr Staley, if I didnt know any better I'd think you were an American! 😉

Boy, we're all just being funny today huh? LOL.

Anyway....

I was told by my local Borders book store by a "manager" (code for a 18 year old recient high school graduate with no knowledge about anything) that New Falcon would no longer be publishing Crowley. This was prompted by my questioning why the occult section suddenly sucked. He told me that until this was "settled" there wouldnt be any re-ordering of Crowley material hense the only book on the shelf was a copy of 777.

I've actually made a few calls out of curiosity myself and if I hear anything more "credit worthy" i'll be sure to post something if nobody else has by then.

My Best!
Kym

I thought everyone knew that Thelema Media and Starfire Publishing are going head to head to see who can take the longest to get a new issue of their house journal out . . . 😉

SPEAKING OF WHICH...I have gone on the Great Starfire Quest and cannot find a single issue available ANYWHERE! Not on ebay, amazon, direct from Publisher, rare book dealers...apparently the Journal is not only in the "rare" category-but no one seems willing to part with one, even to make some cash. I guess Phil Hine's review of Starfire (on his website) was dead on...

SO-! Is there a TENTATIVE release date on the upcoming volume? Damned if I'm going to miss it THIS time around!

I own a beautiful copy , first edition , w complete dustjacket of Magick Without Tears. I bought this one from a private collector in Florida. It is indeed a marvellous work.
I believe this book was published after Crowley's death.
I've been into collecting first editions of Crowley's work for several months now. He was indeed a prophet and a man that , not caring what most people say , fulfilled his mission in this material world and gave us the biggest message of all : BE YOURSELVES. DONT FOLLOW OR BE LIKE ME. FIND AND FULFILL YOUR WILL.
I am new around here and want to give my best wishes to everyone here. A pleasure to be part of this forum.

Yeah I did that too a few years back....no wait I was the one with the books and now they're hers.... 😥

As to Starfire...I'm not really into Grant so I thought the reviews were a little over exagerated....on the other hand I'm in no great hurry to dump my copy either... I'm sure some, like myself, figure it'll be worth quite a bit someday and I may need that money if my kid ever needs a transplant or something...assuming I ever I have the kid 😉

Well, I received my copy today. It's in fairly good condition seeing as it's one that was issued in 94? (at least that was the latest copyright, I don't know enough about the history of the book itself to know if its the same as the last ones put out) However, there's a bunch of page corners folded down to mark spots and lines of text with boxes drawn around them in pen. 😥 People should take better care of their books!

while talking to the doc (hyatt) a while back we got into talking about crowleys publications... from what he told me the o.t.o. was buying up the copywrites of crowleys books and in some instances the stock of these books still left... so alot of his books are still going out of print, thing is i dont know if they plan on republishing any of them or not....

we didnt get into the conversation of why they were buying or even why falcon was selling the copywrites...

i was told this straight from the horses mouth...

The Caliphate O.T.O. bought the Crowley copyrights from the UK Official Receiver in I believe the early 1990s. They assign publishing rights, but the copyrights remain the property of the copyright holder, in this case the Caliphate O.T.O.

"badnewz" wrote:

That's simple. Firstly, buying the Crowley copyrights has proved to be a good financial move; they got them for a pitifully small amount. Secondly, it strengthens their identity - Crowley willed his copyrights to the O.T.O., the Caliphate O.T.O. own the copyright, ergo they are the O.T.O. Winners all round, I'd say.

As to why New Falcon are relinquishing the publishing rights assigned to them, perhaps there's simply been a breakdown of a working relationship. I suspect that the Caliphate O.T.O. like to tie up long-term deals with publishers where possible, but doubtless there will be clauses in the contract enabling them to take back the rights. The fact that the Caliphate O.T.O. are rebranding New Falcon stock might suggest that the prime mover in this particular instance is New Falcon.

I wasn't throwing doubt on what you said, badnewz; I was simply making a rather weak and pathetic joke, which in retrospect was a non-starter, so my apologies 😳

Greetings

I must say that MichaelStaley's second point above made me smile.

Crowley willed his copyrights to the O.T.O., the Caliphate O.T.O. own the copyright, ergo they are the O.T.O.

Especially when converted into a pseudo-formula (it's a habit of mine...)

AC leaves (c) -> OTO
COTO has (c)
.'. COTO = OTO

"Nail Head" I thought.
(Which demonstration is not the same as agreeing with the proposition stated 😉 )

Phew! Thank God for that! I wouldn't like my attempted irony to seem an endorsement. Get me thrown out of the Typhonian O.T.O., that will...

🙂 I was only clarifying _my_ position.
Yours was never in question.
Some of the best nails are made from irony.
I'll get my coat....

(in retrospect the formula would be better as;

AC gives (c) -> OTO
COTO has (c)
.'. COTO = OTO
'.' ...

leaving it more open ended)

On Topic - I did a brief internet search and a few shops and people seem to be claiming to have Magick Without Tears for sale. One went fairly cheaply on ebay UK not so long ago too.
